TIME Magazine: Thousands Expected to Mourn Death of SoCal Teen
Saturday, Mar. 13, 2010
<snipped>
Students have wrapped ribbons around 8,000 sunflowers to hand out at a memorial service for Chelsea King, the 17-year-old girl whose murder has shaken her community and spurred calls for legal changes in how child sex offenders are treated.

Chelsea was a straight-A student ran on the cross-country team, played French horn in the San Diego Youth Symphony and was active in her school's peer counseling program. She was a tireless volunteer in school and community activities, whether working at a prom for special education students or packaging food for needy families in Africa.

She had applied to 11 colleges and aspired to a career that would combine her interests in writing and the environment.

Friend stands by accused killer of Chelsea King
Saturday, March 13, 2010
<snipped>
For the first time since his arrest, a close friend of convicted sex offender John Gardner is talking about the man she has known since high school — a man she says she trusts with her own children. “There’s nothing he wouldn’t do for a friend,” the woman, who wished not to be identified, told San Diego 6 News.

She says Gardner gave her money to buy a prom dress and pictures when she couldn’t afford it. Now 28, she says the man she knows is different from the one accused of murdering and raping Chelsea King and the focus of an investigation for the murder of Amber Dubois. “I really want to not believe it. I want to believe it’s not him, but I don’t know what evidence they have. I just know the John I knew and grew up with in that capacity would not hurt anybody.”

She says she spoke with Gardner in February and he was sad and going back to counseling. [“He lost his job. He lost his car…he had to shuffle from one place to another to live and… was really getting back on some of the pills he’d been taking previously.”

Thousands Expected at Memorial Service for Chelsea King
7:54 AM PST, March 13, 2010

A memorial service will be held Saturday afternoon for Chelsea King, the 17-year-old girl whose body was found at Lake Hodges after she went missing while jogging near the lake.

John Gardner, 30, was arrested three days after Chelsea's body was found. Police say Gardner was linked to King through semen found on her clothing. State Department of Justice spokeswoman Christine Gasparac says Gardner was identified after his DNA was run through a national database.

Thousands to honor Chelsea King at memorial
10:30 AM PST, March 13, 2010
<snipped>
Family, friends and classmates of slain Poway High senior Chelsea King will gather by the hundreds today in the school's football stadium -- along with throngs of people the teen never met -- to celebrate her life and to share in the grief of her loss. Thousands of people are expected on the North County campus for the 2 p.m. memorial, which will provide a focal point for a mass outpouring of grief and outrage over the slaying of a straight-A student who seemed to have the brightest of futures.

Fraunces encouraged members of the general public wishing to view the memorial to view it online.

Anticipating a crush of mourners, Chelsea's family issued priority seating passes to her relatives, close friends and fellow Poway High students.

The amount of community interest in the memorial "has exceeded anyone's expectation and grows each day,'' Fraunces said earlier this week. "Therefore, we are working closely with officials from (the school), Poway Unified School District, the Sheriff's Department, other law enforcement agencies and scores of San Diego businesses donating their services to meet the event's needs,'' Fraunces said.

Co-Workers Upset After Gardner's Mom Returns To Job
Cathy Osborn Is Registered Nurse At Scripps Mercy Hospital

POSTED: 6:42 pm PST March 11, 2010
UPDATED: 8:09 am PST March 12, 2010
<snipped>
New pictures 10News obtained are raising questions about John Gardner's mother, Cathy Osborn. Cathy Osborn is registered nurse at Scripps Mercy in the behavioral health unit and she's a partier.

Risqué pictures obtained by 10News show Obsorn and a group calling themselves the Hash House Harriers running the hills around Lake Hodges and other trails and engaging in some wild activities. We had to blur the pictures when we showed them on television because of the nudity and nature of the photos. There were even a few we couldn't show. But the pictures are a minor aspect of the tension that's developed at Osborn's workplace.

Doctor: Gardner's Childhood Could Explain Adult Behavior
POSTED: 6:13 pm PST March 12, 2010
UPDATED: 7:29 pm PST March 12, 2010
<snipped>
10News spoke with psychologist David Gruder, who said, "Children learn from modeling. All of us learn from what's modeled to us. Not from what we're told." 10News learned Gardner's mother, Cathy Osborn, is a member of the Hash House Harriers, an adult running club. Pictures obtained by 10News showed club members, including Osborn, partying half-naked or completely naked after a run. Gruder said any child exposed to such behavior would be impacted.

"If this is part of the environment that a child grows up in, then that child starts to believe as a child that this is part of what's normal and that it's OK for them to follow in those footsteps," said Gruder. There is no proof that Gardner ever saw his mother with the club or knew about it.

However, according to Gruder, Gardner's actions as a 20-year-old, when he was convicted for committing a lewd act on a 13-year-old girl, cannot be blamed on anyone else.

"The responsibility of adult actions is squarely on our shoulders as adults and not with our parents anymore," Gruder explained. "That's part of what being a mature adult requires of us."Gruder said the only time someone else could be held responsible is when the suspect is a ward of the state and considered insane, and Gardner was neither.

Ex-friend: Gardner a wacky guy
She says the accused killer once confided in her about abuse by a male relative

March 12, 2010 at 4:46 p.m., updated March 12, 2010 at 10:33 p.m.
<snipped>
This is the John Albert Gardner III that Jennifer Brandt knows. The wacky guy who walks into convenience stores wearing nothing but a paper bag over his head and yells, “I’m naked.” Or holds onto car bumpers to get hauled up mountain roads on in-line skates as they smoke and melt.

Brandt, who graduated with Gardner from Rim of the World High School in Lake Arrowhead in 1997 and was a close friend for the next few years, remembered him as “kind of wild and crazy, always trying to get attention.” “He professed his innocence to us, and since he had never done anything like that, we believed him,” she said.

Brandt said there’s no way anyone could have predicted their friend would face the future he does. “You can put all that together and say this is what has led up to that,” she said. “But there are people out there who have all that done to them, and they don’t go around killing people. You just never know who it’s going to be and what’s going to cause it.”

County trumped city in looking for Chelsea
Sheriff, S.D. chief agreed on who would take lead

Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 12:04 a.m.
<snipped>
Chelsea King went missing from Rancho Bernardo Community Park, one of the jewels in the San Diego city park system. Her body was found near Lake Hodges, inside city limits. But San Diego homicide detectives have no official role in the high-profile case that has gripped the community for two weeks.

Instead, San Diego County Sheriff William Gore assumed responsibility for the investigation because the original missing-person call from Chelsea’s parents came from Poway, which contracts with the sheriff for law enforcement. “Why did the San Diego Police Department take a back seat in an investigation of a crime perpetrated within their jurisdiction?” San Diego internal affairs Sgt. Steve McMillan wrote on his blog.

Police Chief William Lansdowne released a statement on the issue Friday. “Because Chelsea was a resident of Poway, the Sheriff’s Department took the lead in the search effort,” the statement said. “Once it was determined that a crime had been committed, Sheriff Gore and I spoke and decided that the Sheriff’s Department should continue taking the lead because shifting control of the investigation would have caused delays in what was a rapidly evolving investigation.”

Mourning the loss of Chelsea and Amber – there is help
Friday, March 12, 2010
<snipped>
Thousands of San Diego residents recently turned out to mourn 17-year-old Chelsea King and 14-year-old Amber Dubois at separate candlelight vigils just one week apart. Now many of those mourners — some of whom have never met the girls or their families — are pouring into the San Diego Hospice office seeking help to cope with the tragic loss to their communities of Rancho Bernardo, Poway and Escondido.

Liane Fry, a licensed marriage and family therapist and program manager at the Center for Grief Care and Education for San Diego Hospice, said the facility –- which specializes in end-of-life care — has been getting calls from grieving community members wanting to talk since the search for King began Feb. 25.

“Primarily, we are getting calls from people who were involved in the search or other parents,” she said. “We are seeing a broader community response. Given how well-publicized it was, it hit all of us so profoundly.” Both girls were found dead within a week of each other, following their separate mysterious disappearances.

Ryan Jackson, a marriage and family therapist intern at the LifeSping Center and former bereavement counselor for San Diego Hospice, said that while the response from the community is varied –- from the families of the victims to those who never knew them –- the impact of the events is strong enough to trigger grief in everyone.

Chelsea King remembered, described as ’shining light’
Saturday, March 13, 2010
<snipped>
Volunteers handed out sunflowers to an overflow crowd of more than 6,000 mourners arriving at Poway High School Saturday to honor slain teenager Chelsea King, described by her principal as a “shining light” that the community must make sure is never extinguished. Family, friends, classmates and throngs of others sat beneath her giant image over the football stadium grandstand, as the sun beamed through cloudy skies.

Poway High School Principal Scott Fisher, speaking from a stage festooned with sunflower bouquets, told the crowd the events in the two weeks since Chelsea’s disappearance and the discovery of her body have filled the hearts of everyone at the school, and “millions who never had the privilege of knowing Chelsea.” “While we mourn,” Fisher said, ”Chelsea’s passing has strengthened the bonds of this community more than I could have ever imagined.”

The memorial got underway at 2 p.m. and featured music from the Poway High School band and the San Diego Youth Symphony, of which she had been a member. Pastor Harry Kuehl, of the Church of Rancho Bernardo, said “our world has been rocked” by Chelsea’s death. Chelsea’s cousin, Stephanie Dorian, said the teenager’s story has
touched the world. “She has not died in vain,” Dorian said. “Neither did Amber Dubois. Chelsea and Amber have become the catalyst to a new generation coming together before our very eyes to demand `No, never again.”’

Dorian asked for a moment of silence in memory of King and Dubois, an Escondido High student who may have fallen victim to the same alleged sexual predator.

Masses Celebrate the Life of Chelsea King
In a heartbreaking display of courage, the Kings took the stage, bonded in tragedy

Updated 6:00 PM PST, Sat, Mar 13, 2010
<snipped>
Thousands gathered at Poway High to remember a beloved daughter, sister, friend, peer counselor and to some a stranger whose tragic death has shaken their soul. “I just have to take this in for a minute,” Chelsea’s mom Kelly King said tearfully. As she caught her breath, she told the crowd how she wakes up every morning and has to remember how to breathe and how to put one foot in front of the other. “Just as I feel both these tasks are beyond my capabilities, I hear Chelsea. She’s saying ‘come on mom, we have important things to do’,” Kelly King said.

And so their conversation begins, she explained to the crowd. “I tell her, ‘ angel, I don’t know how or where to begin. And she tells me, ‘mom, look around you. Take in all the beauty we have around us and help other people see it as well. Watch the sunrise and see all the hope it brings with each new day. Let the music that I’ve always found so much joy and beauty in raise your spirits and allow you to soar’,” she said.

Chelsea’s younger brother, Tyler King, said he’s been asked a question a lot this week. “That is, ‘are you okay?’ I want to say I’m okay, but I’m not okay because the best thing in my life has been taken away from me, it was Chelsea. But her spirit is so large that it defeats death and so she’s still right here with all of us,” he said.

As Chelsea’s father took the stage, he made a gesture. “To all the Poway kids that knew Chelsea extremely well,” Brent King said clasping his hands, twisting his arms and bowing his head. “Chelsea’s way of relieving stress and I needed a bit.” Some of the crowd cheered and knew exactly what he meant. An inside joke, with those who knew her best.

“As a father, as a parent, you dream of watching your children grow, experience, learn, challenge and embrace life. You imagine their college days, wonder who the person of their dreams is and what type of life they will build together. You never realize that as a parent you also sign up for pain.”

“Chelsea loves words. The right word at the right time is so important to her. She chose a word for me to share with you today that personifies who Chelsea is. It’s a simple but complex word and a very challenging word, much like her,” Brent King said. The word is give. “I am asking each of you to think about Chelsea’s word. I’m asking each of you to give. Give your time, even if it’s one hour a month. Give your voice, even if it’s one email or vote or signature on a petition. Give your energy to help Chelsea’s light shine brightly. I love you angel.”

Thousands attend memorial service for Chelsea King

Family and friends told the crowd of Chelsea's big dreams, terrific sense of humor, sense of style, athleticism and thirst for knowledge and adventure. They were profusely thankful for the massive search for her after she went missing Feb. 25 on a run at a San Diego Park and for the outpouring of sympathy after her body was found five days later.

"On Feb. 25 our lives changed dramatically and will remain changed forever," said Chuck McCully, her uncle. "Our hearts were shattered."

Speakers also said her heinous death has galvanized people to prevent other children from falling victim to predators. A moment of silence was held for Amber Dubois, whose bones were found a last week north of San Diego more than a year after she went missing while walking to school.

"Chelsea was a force who was setting out to change the world," said Cindy Provenzano, a family friend. "She did not die in vain and neither did Amber Dubois."
