By Lisa Rab, Tuesday, Apr. 6 2010 @ 10:59AM

A year ago, Fort Lauderdale bail bondsman William "Cobra" Staubs nearly ended his 30-year career by searching for missing 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings.

Cobra was slapped with a felony charge of false imprisonment when he tried to arrest accused child molester Daniel Snodgrass in Putnam County, near where Haleigh disappeared. Snodgrass complained to the local sheriff's office that Cobra was not authorized to revoke his bond.
...........................
But after a year of legal wrangling, Cobra recently struck a deal with prosecutors in the case. He pleaded guilty to a lesser, misdemeanor battery charge for his forceful arrest of Snodgrass.Cobra's now on probation for a year......

Misty Complains Of Treatment In Jail
Haleigh Cummings' Stepmotehr Says She Wants To Mix With Other Inmates

POSTED: Wednesday, April 7, 2010
UPDATED: 9:00 pm EDT April 7, 2010

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office released more video of Misty Cummings' jailhouse visits with relatives. During a visit with her father, Hank Croslin Sr. she said she wants Gov. Charlie Crist to look into her treatment in jail.

Cummings said she is upset she has to stay in confinement away from other inmates. She also complained about the food.

During the visit recorded in the most recent video, Croslin urged Misty to tell police everything she knows about Haleigh's disappearance, even if it means giving investigators information about her ex-husband, Ronald Cummings. "I want you to forget about Ronald, and if you know anything Ronald did, you need to come forward," Croslin said. "Do not protect him because he's not going to protect you."

Croslin said that even his daughter's own attorney is skeptical and thinks that she is not telling everything she knows about Haleigh, who has now been missing for more than a year. "He says he wasn't going to leave you. He's gonna stick with you to the end. He just wishes that you would be straight with him. He's your lawyer, He won't do anything to harm you," Croslin told his daughter.

As of Wednesday evening, the governor's office said the letter from Cummings has not been received.

New video was released recently of Croslin meeting with relatives. In it, she complains about jail food and about being segregated from other inmates.

"We wrote to the governor, we wrote to sheriff, we wrote to everybody…" Croslin said while talking to her father, according to the news Web site.

“We wrote to the governor, we wrote to sheriff, we wrote to everybody, that's bull crap,” Misty said while talking to her dad.

Misty said she actually wrote letters to the Governor demanding he take action. In the newly-released jailhouse videos, the former step-mother of Haleigh Cummings complained about many things, including her jailhouse meals.

WFTV checked with the governor's office and, so far, it says it has not received any complaint letters from Misty.

During the call, Misty said she does not thinks he will receive a fair trial on the drug trafficking charged. She calls her $1.3 million bail ridiculous and said her jail time is unwarranted.

"They just targeted you for the Haleigh case, that's why you're in there right now," Hank Croslin said.

"They can't us that against me, dad." Misty said, "this is two different things, they cannot do that."

Hank Croslin also urged Misty to tell police everything she knows about Haleigh's disappearance, even if it means giving investigators information about her ex-husband, Ronald Cumming.

UPDATED: Sheriff Meets With Haleigh's Family; Search Continues
POSTED: Tuesday, April 13, 2010
UPDATED: 5:12 pm EDT April 13, 2010
<snipped>
Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy said Tuesday afternoon that he met with the family of Haleigh Cummings but asked that their conversations stay between him and the family.

Hardy said investigators still have not found Haleigh, the 6-year-old Satsuma girl who went missing 14 months ago. "We're going to continue this investigation until we can bring it to a logical conclusion," Hardy said.

When asked if the investigation was moved from a missing persons case to a homicide investigation, Hardy said, "That is a decision that will be made later."

Several of Haleigh's relatives were brought to the sheriff's office earlier Tuesday where they were inside for about an hour and a half. The sheriff's office said in a news release that the purpose of the meeting was to inform the family of the search and updated them on the status of the investigation.

Jail records showed that Misty Cummings, the last person to see the then-5-year-old when she vanished from her home in February 2009, was no longer being held in the St. Johns County Jail on drug trafficking charges, and the sheriff said she was being brought back to Putnam County for an interview.

Minor called the search effort "massive," and included deputies from Putnam, Clay and Marion counties, as well as the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. He said cadaver dogs were also brought to the scene.

UPDATED: New search, new leads draw Haleigh case closer to being solved
Sheriff says Haleigh has not been found

A break may have come from Croslin, who said she was with Haleigh and the kindergartner's brother the night of the disappearance. Her attorney said she may have provided helpful information that led to other leads. "This latest search was based on information from someone else," said attorney Robert Fields. He said Croslin may have "shed some light" on who was responsible. "Somebody else has possibly been implicated in this," he said. "You need to look away from Misty."

Investigators have not described the nature of the lead, but Misty Croslin's father, Hank Croslin Sr., said his mother-in-law told him police have surrounded the Nashville, Tenn., area home where a relative lives. He said he thinks they are waiting for Florida authorities to arrive. Joseph Overstreet is a cousin of Croslin's and was in a dispute with Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings, when Cummings accused him of stealing a gun. Overstreet moved back to Tennessee after Haleigh disappeared. He was interviewed by detectives before being cleared last year.

Overstreet's mother, Tina Overstreet, declined to comment when she was reached by phone Tuesday night. However, she told a Nashville TV station, WSMV, her son was at his home in Antioch. He wasn't willing to talk but his mother did offer a comment. "We have not heard anything from anybody in Florida," she told the station. "I know the little girl is still missing. We've not heard anything. My son is at home, not doing anything, bothering nobody. People continue to bother him." Overstreet's mother said police haven't talked to him in six months.

Croslin's mother, Lisa Croslin, said her daughter said she was taken to Putnam County but was separated from other members of Haleigh's family and left alone in a room before she was returned to St. Johns County. Lisa Croslin said her daughter told her by phone from the St. Johns jail that she was not interviewed about the case Tuesday.

Haleigh's mother, Crystal Sheffield, said she would rather not comment. She and her mother, Marie Griffis, met with the sheriff Tuesday. From their ranch in Baker County, other family members said the Sheriff's Office and property owners didn't want media there and couldn't comment further.

The search for Haleigh Cummings has new life today as officials converged on the St. Johns River and family members of the missing little girl reported to the sheriff's office. The Putnam County Sheriff's Office said this morning that authorities are acting on a tip, but kept details of the search close to the vest.

The search is focused along the St. Johns River between Welaka and Satsuma near County Road 309.

A short time ago, Haleigh's family arrived at the Putnam County jail, where Sheriff Jeff Hardy said officials are conducting interviews with the family in addition to searching. Asked if she had closure, Haleigh's grandmother Teresa Neves, Ronald Cummings' mother, replied, "No, that's all I can say."

According to a friend of the family, Lisa Finnley, the relatives were meeting with the sheriff. She described the atmosphere as tense, saying some members of the family were in tears.

Hardy declined to confirm or deny if Haleigh has been found.

Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings, who has been in jail on unrelated drug charges was among the family taken to the sheriff's office. He was returned to Putnam County jail in shackles afterwards. Misty Croslin, Haleigh's former stepmother, has been in St. Johns County jail on drug charges unrelated to the case. Today, she was taken out of the jail but remained in police custody. according to a public information officer for St. Johns County Office confirmed that Croslin remains in custody. She returned to the St. Johns County jail this afternoon. Her attorney Robert Fields, said today that the tip did not come from his client.

Several law enforcement boats have been scouring the river near the boat ramp at the end of Shell Harbor Road, which is blocked off by deputies. The river area where police are now was searched about a year ago.

"Although various resources are being utilized to conduct this search, it is just one of many operations conducted during this investigation."

The Sheriff's Office reported it did not want the location released to "prevent unnecessary congestion from onlookers" and also reported that the name of the person who provided the tip as well as what "physical evidence" is supposedly at the site would not be released.

Deputies are searching an area near Satsuma in Putnam County and Florida Fish and Wildlife officials are searching on the St. Johns River, just four miles from where Haleigh was last seen. Deputies said they are acting on one of many tips they have received in the case.

Deputies said they have not yet found Haleigh and will decide later whether to switch from a missing person case to a homicide case.

Misty Croslin was brought from jail for more questioning, according to officials.

Detectives said that because of the sensitivity of this investigation, they will not provide any information about the physical evidence alleged to be found in this area.

Sources told WFTV a suspect is in custody, but wouldn't provide any additional details. WFTV spoke to Haleigh's grandmother, but she said she's not allowed to talk about the search.

Investigators would not give out the exact location of the search, to keep onlookers away. They would only say it's near previous searches for the girl.

"A search is currently being conducted as the result of one of the many leads received thus far in this case. The area being searched is in the Satsuma area of Putnam County. Several of Haleigh's relatives were reportedly brought to the sheriff's office earlier Tuesday. They were informed of the latest in the search. Officials said they would not release what was discussed.

There are also reports that the last person to see Haleigh, Misty Cummings, is no longer being held in the St. Johns County Jail on drug trafficking charges. But it's not clear where she's been taken.

Also Tuesday, St. Johns County sheriff's officials confirmed Misty Croslin, who had been baby-sitting Haleigh when the girl was last seen, was removed from their jail by Putnam County officials.

A resident on Shell Harbour Road, off of County Road 309, south of the girl's Satsuma home, said officers have been searching in the area since overnight. The woman, who did not want to be named but said she has lived in the area about two years, said officers have gone door-to-door in the neighborhood getting residents names and asking if they have seen a newer model, gray van in connection with the Haleigh Cummings case. "There must 25 vans and trucks," the woman said, describing the scene.

Officers will only let people go so far down the road that runs to the St. Johns River. People were only being allowed in and out of the neighborhood with proof that live in the area, she said. "I said to one of the detectives that I just pray that you find her so the family has some resolution," the woman said.

Another resident said officers were seeking information on a 1990s model Chrysler van.

Gail Jones, who lives off Easy Street, was watching the search from her neighbor Kathy Goodson's dock on the St. Johns River. "I have a 7-year-old grandchild that went to stay and play with Haleigh," Jones said. "They went to Browning Pearce Elementary together. And this is just devastating. "Every day I would go out on my dock and look in the water and just think of Haleigh. We just want closure like everybody else."

The Sheriff's Office also confirmed that Sheriff Jeff Hardy had met with members of Haleigh's family earlier in the day. "The purpose of the meeting was to inform them of the search and update them on the status of the investigation. Out of respect for the families, the details of these conversations will not be released," the Sheriff's Office reported in a statement released Tuesday afternoon.

But Hardy was clear this afternoon: "No, we haven't found Haleigh."

Hardy said deputies from his office have spoken with many members of Haleigh's family today as they follow the new potential lead.

Facts in today's search remain scarce, and Hardy reminded everyone that the focus is on the little girl and her family.
