Inside the Haleigh Cummings' investigation
2/9/10 Last Update: 11:42 pm
<snipped>
The special investigation room is located inside the Putnam County Sheriff's Office and contains binders full of leads in the case of the missing girl. Leads from psychics are also documented and placed on bookshelves.

You'll also find dozens of CDs and DVDs full of interviews and various time lines in the case, which Action News was asked not to shoot with our cameras.

There is also a large box dedicated to the last person police say saw Haleigh Cummings alive, Misty Cummings. Sheriff Jeff Hardy says he still believes Misty is the key to the investigation.

"We have never had tunnel vision in focusing on one piece of the puzzle. That is a major piece of the pie. No question about it," Sheriff Hardy said about Misty Cummings.

The Sheriff says his Detectives have done everything within the law to get answers from Misty. "We are bound by laws, policy, and procedure, and she has an attorney," said Harding.

Putnam prepares to mark the day
Published: Wednesday, February 10, 2010 1:11 AM EST

Tonight, family members will commemorate the 6-year-old in a public vigil titled "Hope for Haleigh." Supporters are asked to join in the candlelit memorial in hope that the missing child will one day return home. The vigil will take place at the entrance to the River Villas neighborhood in Satsuma, where Haleigh lived with her father, Ronald Cummings, 26, and then-babysitter, Misty Croslin. It is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

"Evidence and information obtained during this investigation indicate a strong likelihood that Haleigh's disappearance is the result of foul play by someone known to Misty Croslin and/or Ronald Cummings," Lt. Johnny Greenwood, spokesman for the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, said. "Investigators still believe that Misty Croslin holds important answers in this case. She still refuses to provide any sort of detailed accounting of the hours during the late evening and early morning of Haleigh's disappearance. Furthermore, physical evidence at the scene contradicts Misty's sketchy account of her evening activities."

Even so, investigators have not named a specific person of interest.

As the anniversary passes, Croslin and Cummings remain behind bars. Investigators say the drug trafficking charges are not related to the Haleigh case, but they are willing to listen to those willing to talk.

All are welcome to join the family tonight in remembering the girl who forever changed what was once a small, quiet town. And as the community joins together, the hope remains that some day Haleigh will come home.

UPDATED: Haleigh Cummings Missing One Year
Wednesday, February 10, 2010 5:34:19 PM
<snipped>
Wednesday marks one year since Haleigh Cummings vanished from her Putnam County home. Investigators believe they know who holds the key piece of the puzzle that could solve her disappearance. The one thing that remains the same is Haleigh is still missing.

News 13 only spotted one marquee in town holding out hope for Haleigh's return. "I still feel for the grandmother and the great grandmother because I still feel that because they can't come to closure with. (Disappearance?) That's right," said Jan Harrison.

The sheriff's investigators on the case are still the same ones who began searching a year ago. On Wednesday, they are remembering her disappearance by wearing a ribbon on their lapel. "We get new leads every day,” said Lt. Jonny Greenwood from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office. “You know it's just going to take the one that we need."

Detectives believe that one tip may come from the Misty, who was then Ronald's girlfriend. Detectives hope to pry the valuable piece of information once they get the green light.

“She definitely holds some key information that she hasn't come forward on," Lt. Greenwood said. “With the approval of her attorney, we will talk to her if we are afforded the opportunity to." Whether it comes from Misty Croslin, Ronald Cummings or someone else, Putnam County detectives are holding out hope they'll get that one tip that'll lead to Haleigh’s whereabouts.

Today marks one year since we first learned that 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings was missing. Investigators say she was kidnapped from her Satsuma home in Putnam County the night of February 9th.

After one year, investigators still don't know where little Haleigh is, but they do think that Misty Croslin might know more than she's telling.

After investigators checked out 5,768 leads over the past 12 months, the sheriff's office still isn't sure what happened to Haleigh. And while investigators have not identified a person of interest in the case, they said evidence and information obtained indicate a strong likelihood that Haleigh's disappearance is the result of foul play by someone known to Misty Cummings and/or Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings.

"What do you say to the family that their child went missing and we have not been able to bring it to a logical conclusion at this point," Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy said. "What we don't know is we can't break this timeline between Feb. 9 and the morning of the 10th. ... The reality could be that the child might not be alive."

Family, friends and supporters gathered Wednesday night for a candlelight vigil for Haleigh in Satsuma, hoping and praying the girl will return home.

"Investigators still believe that Misty Croslin holds important answers in this case," Putnam County Sheriff's Lt. Johnny Greenwood said in a release Tuesday.

"She still refuses to provide any sort of detailed accounting of the hours during the late evening and early morning of Haleigh's disappearance," Greenwood continued. "Furthermore, physical evidence at the scene contradicts Misty's sketchy account of her evening activities."

Meanwhile, a vigil will be held today a short distance from the Satsuma home in southeastern Putnam County from which Haleigh vanished. It will start at 6 p.m. at the corner of Tyler Street and Monroe Avenue.

Family members of Cummings and Haleigh's mother, Crystal Sheffield, are expected to attend. A similar vigil was held Saturday in Glen St. Mary in Baker County, where Sheffield lives.

Greenwood added that it is unlikely Haleigh's disappearance is the work of a stranger. Evidence and information gathered in the investigation indicate a strong likelihood that it was committed by someone known to Cummings or Croslin, Greenwood added.

Donna Brock jailhouse conversation released
February 10, 1:12 AM
<snipped>
Donna Brock, a former Texas Equusearch volunteer who was paid to go undercover and get information out of Misty Croslin, former stepmother of missing Haleigh Cummings, is in jail for drug trafficking along with Croslin, Ronald Cummings, the missing child's father, and others. Brock was busted after a month long drug ring infiltration implicated her. Now audio of Donna Brock's telephone conversations is being released on the 1-year-anniversary of the mysterious disappearance of Haleigh Cummings, of Satsuma, Fla., who was 5 went she went missing.

The unnamed male she is talking to on the phone also scolds her about selling pills and discusses how Haleigh could have possibly died by overdosing on pills.

Officials with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said Haleigh's disappearance is still considered an active investigation.

One year later, Croslin is not considered a person of interest, but investigators said they believe she holds important answers in the case, and her recounts of what happened during the initial hours when Haleigh went missing are inconsistent and sketchy.

Haleigh Update: The Donna Brock Jail Tape
Posted: Wednesday, 10 February 2010 6:53AM
<snipped>
In the tapes, Brock talks about how detectives think Misty told her what happened to Haleigh because over the last several months, the two appear to have gotten close.

Brock states on the phone that she gave pills to Misty and that Misty needed them because she was in pain.

"I didn't think it was no big deal, I didn't want them you know what I'm saying?” said Brock. “I didn't need them, I didn't want them. It was more on my thinking if I just gave these to her, maybe she'll trust me a little bit more."

We cannot at this time identify who Brock was talking to on the phone, but the conversation did turn to Haleigh and the rumor that she accidentally got into some some pills the night she vanished.

97.3 The Sky is in the process of obtaining the complete set of redacted phone call audio files from Donna Brock from the St. Johns County jail.

Final Connection To Haleigh Cummings Leaves Neighborhood

Later Wednesday, relatives of Haleigh Cummings will hold a candlelight vigil in the Satsuma neighborhood where she vanished a year ago.

But after the ceremony, there will be no one related to Haleigh living in the neighborhood. The final connection to the family moved out last weekend.

Ronald Cummings lived in a trailer with his girlfriend, Misty, a year ago when the girl disappeared. Deputies made the trailer off-limits for weeks, and her family never moved back into the home in the Satsuma neighborhood near Highway 17.

Misty's brother, Tommy Croslin, and her father, Hank Croslin Sr., lived about 100 yards away in the same neighborhood.

But neighbors say Hank Croslin Sr. moved out last Saturday, leaving behind some broken furniture and toys on the road. The seven neighbors First Coast News talked to Tuesday said they were glad all the relatives are gone.

"They were a nuisance to the neighborhood," said neighbor Stephanie Santos. "They were very scary to the kids."

UPDATED: Vigil revives hope for finding Haleigh
Story updated at 6:27 AM on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010
<snipped>
About 100 people commemorated the one-year anniversary of Haleigh Cummings’ disappearance Wednesday night by praying for her safe return during a cold Satsuma sundown. Within walking distance of the mobile home where she disappeared, family members and friends and neighbors held aloft candles and released balloons while praying that Haleigh would soon be found alive.

Haleigh’s mother, Crystal Sheffield, attended the event but did not speak. Family members said the anniversary had been hard on her. Many people came up to Sheffield and hugged her while asking how she was holding up. The event ended with all of the lit candles being put on a table. Sheffield and other family members put their candles down first, and were followed by everyone else in attendance.

Several family members called on God to help them find Haleigh. “I’m still waiting for God to answer our question on where Haleigh is,” said Marie Griffis, Haleigh’s maternal grandmother, who started out by reading a Bible verse. “I’m standing still waiting for an answer.”

Haleigh’s father, Ronald Cummings, is in jail on drug charges and could not attend the event. Her paternal grandmother, Teresa Nieves, read a letter from Cummings about how much he missed Haleigh. Cummings has put Haleigh’s picture on the wall of his jail cell and it’s the first thing he sees in the morning and the last thing he sees at night, Nieves said. “His greatest wish is to see Haleigh again,” she said.

Ann Dugger, executive director of the Justice Coalition, said the vigil was a sign that police and the community were not giving up on the case. “We’re here to offer hope and we will not give up,” said Dugger. “If anyone out there has answers on where Haleigh is we’re asking them to do the right thing and come forward.

But police believe the people who know the most are in jail, specifically Haleigh’s father and her former stepmother, Misty Croslin.

Detectives Mark 1 Year Since Haleigh's Disapperance
Posted: 11:57 am EST February 10, 2010
<snipped>
The Putnam County Sheriff's Office says detectives have investigated thousands of tips since Haleigh Cummings, then 5 years old, disappeared from her family's Satsuma trailer a year ago Wednesday.

The child's father, Ronald Cummings, has said he returned from work and couldn't find his daughter. His then-girlfriend, Misty Croslin, had been baby-sitting the child.

Investigators say evidence and information they've collected indicates a strong likelihood the child's disappearance is the result of foul play by someone known to Cummings or Croslin.

Caylee Anthony and Haleigh Cummings: a motion, an anniversary

Caylee and Haleigh -- they’re two of the most familiar names in Central Florida.

Television looked back at the first anniversary of Haleigh Cummings’ disappearance.

In a report at noon, WESH-Channel 2’s Danielle Bellini recapped Haleigh’s story, which remains an active investigation. Misty Croslin, who was baby-sitting the girl when she vanished, “is not considered a person of interest but investigators believe she holds important answers in the case,” Bellini said.

Bellini summed up Haleigh’s case: “Over the course of the year there’s been intense searches over thousands of acres and almost 6,000 leads, but not one led to Haleigh. The sheriff’s office is still asking for the public’s help to find Haleigh.”

Sheriff Jeff Hardy on Haleigh Cummings investigation

Published : Wednesday, 10 Feb 2010, 5:50 PM EST
<snipped>
Sheriff Jeff Hardy has more than 20 years law enforcement experience. He's captured murders, rapists, escaped inmates but it was a phone call just one month into his new job as sheriff that would soon become the most difficult challenge he's ever faced. “It was approximately 34 days after I took office. I just knew it wasn’t going to be a good call. And it was my undersheriff calling me and he explained to me that we had a missing 5-year-old.”

Since that phone call, sheriff hardy says life inside the Putnam County Sheriff's Office isn't the same. “There are so many emotions involved in this case. Very difficult. I've got, I take this to bed with me every night.”

The sheriff says everyday work is done inside of his office but everyday, many of his deputies take the investigation home with them. “We signed up for this a long time ago. It’s a long hours, a lot of emotions…but the toll I hate the most is the toll it took on the family. Because they didn’t sign up for this.”

Misty: 'There's Nothing To Break Me On'
More Jailhouse Video Released Of Misty Cummings' Calls With Parents
POSTED: Wednesday, February 10, 2010
UPDATED: 6:51 pm EST February 10, 2010
<snipped>
In the latest round of jailhouse video released by the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, a more animated Misty Cummings appears frustrated with investigators.

Misty: If they give me 20 years in prison it'll be OK because you guys will come see me. I'll get out and everything will be fine. I'm not scared.

Lisa: You'll be old and gray like me.

Misty: I don't care because they're not going to put me away for something I didn't do. And I didn't have anything to do with Haleigh. And if I knew who did, I would tell them. I've told them everything I can tell them and they need to leave me alone about that.

In a visit with her family earlier this month, Cummings talks freely about her plight in jail and Haleigh, who's now been missing for one year.

Lisa: As soon as they find out what happened to Haleigh, everything will be different.

Misty: I know.

Lisa: I can't believe they still believe, you know. It's crazy.

Misty: It's ridiculous, because they got my bond set so high just because of that and it's not fair. This has nothing to do with it.

Lisa: I know.

Misty: That's what they think I'm going to break. There's nothing to break me on, so they need to leave me alone.

Hank Croslin Sr., Misty Cummings' father, also enters the conversation.

Hank: We just need to find Haleigh.

Misty: I know.

Hank: That's what we need to do.

Hank: If we can find Haleigh, it would be better for everybody.

Misty: I know. I've been, I sit and wonder every day, thinking, just trying to go back and think if I missed anything. I do. Every day. And it's just not, dad, there's nothing. I'm telling you. It's hard.

Misty: God's going to bring Haleigh home. God's going to bring Haleigh home.

Lisa: That's right.

The conversation later turned to the intense media coverage of her case.

Lisa: I think Mrs. Nancy Grace needs to keep her mouth shut until she knows her facts.

Lisa: That's right. I don't blame you at all. I mean they need to give you a nationwide apology.

Misty: They're not going to put me down no more. I'm tired of it. I'm going to start standing up for myself.

Lisa: That's what you need to do right there.

Lisa: Do you ever get to watch Nancy Grace?

Misty: No, we don't. I'm glad.

Lisa: Well, yours and Chelsea's and everybody's phone calls are going to be on there tonight.

Misty: Oh, good.

Lisa: I know. This is all crazy.

Misty: Well, whenever I talk to Chelsea here or Timmy or whenever, I'll try to call them later so I can see what's said or whatever.

Her family is holding two vigils for the girl as the Putnam County Sheriff's Office insists it continues to follow up on leads.

Haleigh's father's side of the family is holding a candlelight vigil in Satsuma that will begin at about 6 p.m. It's happening just down the street from where Haleigh vanished from her home in the middle of the night one year ago.

Investigators stress the case is still active and are asking for any tips, including information about Croslin's activities leading up to Haleigh's disappearance.

Cummings' family said the focus isn't on the hardships of the past year, but the heartbreak of Haleigh's disappearance and their hope for her safe return.

This is all crazy

Haleigh Update: More Jail Video and Audio Coming!
Posted: Wednesday, 10 February 2010 6:00PM
<snipped>
On January 10, 2010, Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings, and former babysitter/stepmom, Misty Croslin Cummings, were arrested on drug trafficking charges along with Ron's cousin, Hope Sykes, Misty's brother, Tommy Croslin, and Misty's friend, Donna Brock.

Recently, some audio and video recordings from the jails where the suspects are housed was released.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office contacted News Talk 97.3 The SKY to inform us they have two new redacted DVD video recordings of more jail visits with inmates Misty Croslin Cummings and her brother Tommy Croslin along with an audio CD with redacted phone calls from inmate Donna Brock. The audio and video files were too big to be transferred electronically and the notification came to us too late to get a courier to the St Johns County Sheriff's Office before it closed.

The SKY's TJ Hart will drive to St. Augustine at daybreak to get the DVD's and CD's as soon as the doors at the sheriff's office opens. Hopefully, we will be able to load the electronic information on to our laptop computer and have it up and online before 9am ET Thursday.
