Report: Misty Croslin at search scene for Haleigh Cummings
News agencies report Haleigh Cummings searchers retrieved a large box from the river.

6:40 p.m. EDT, April 14, 2010
<snipped>
Deputies blocked off access along Shell Harbour Road near rural Satsuma while they search an area around a dock at the end of that road.

Meanwhile, a local television station is reporting that a woman who looks like Misty Croslin is at the scene of the search in her jail clothes. The woman — with her hands in handcuffs — walked onto a dock on the river near where divers are searching for the second day in a row, WKMG-Channel 6 is reporting.

Putnam County deputies have shut off road and river traffic to where divers are. WKMG gathered video of Croslin from its helicopter above the scene.

Investigators have said they don't think Croslin has told everything she knows about what happened to Haleigh.

When asked if Croslin's jail interviews had anything to do with the tip, Neves said "I don't know if this new lead has anything to do with her."

Dive teams spent all day in the St. Johns River searching for clues into the disappearance of Haleigh Cummings. Neighbors say they may even be searching for her body in the river just a couple miles from the home she disappeared from in Satsuma.

It's a huge undertaking with some 40 divers from five law enforcement agencies scouring the bottom of the river at the end of a road in Putnam County. They're acting on a tip and hope to find something that will let them figure out what happened to Haleigh Cummings.

Day 2 of revived Haleigh search bears no discoveries; Tennessee cousin talks
Tennessee cousin interviewed; sheriff says case unchanged

April 14, 2010 - 11:38am
<snipped>
The young Tennessee man who was interviewed by detectives in the revived search for Haleigh Cummings denied any involvement or knowledge with the girl’s disappearance this afternoon. Joseph Overstreet, 20, and his mother Tina sat in his attorney’s office for a news conference this afternoon. Joseph Overstreet mostly sat quietly with his head down while his lawyer answered questions about the case. But he and his mother both began to cry when asked about the impact the investigation has had on them “I’ve lost a lot of family,” he said, before putting his head down and sobbing.

The meeting Tuesday with Hardy was emotional, Connie Sheffield said today. Crystal is her stepdaughter. She said about a dozen members of the Sheffield and Cummings families, including Ronald Cummings, were in the room. "We were all in the room together crying," she said of the two families, who have often been at odds during the past year.

She said the sheriff asked that details of what went on in the meeting not be disclosed but said he did not indicate any evidence had been found during the search. "We don't know if they are looking for evidence or they are looking for her body," she said.

She said it was the first time the families had been called together as a group. She said she and her husband, Johnny Sheffield have been bracing themselves for whatever the outcome may be. "We're a little in the dark but we're waiting to see if anything comes out of the search," Connie Sheffield said.

Water searches
More than 14 months have passed since Haleigh Cummings' disappearance. If the 5-year-old's body were dumped in the St. Johns River, as some suspect, there likely isn't much left of it.

Speaking generally about forensic investigations, John Williams, a forensic anthropologist at Western Carolina University, said human bodies tend to decompose faster in warm waters like those in Florida. "I doubt the body will be fully intact after a year," he said.

A surface-water temperature gauge near Satsuma shows that the river fluctuates from a monthly average of 59 degrees in January to 86 degrees in July and August. Temperatures at the bottom, where divers are searching, are almost certainly several degrees cooler. The closer to freezing, or 32 degrees, the better preserved a body will be, Williams said.

A child's body tends to break apart faster than an adult's because it has less tissue to lose to begin with. More than likely, after a year underwater, there would be little left except bones and some tissue,
Williams said.

A factor possibly working in divers' favor: The St. Johns, with its average
drop of 1 inch per mile, is one of the slowest-moving rivers in the world.
It's not uncommon, Williams said, for outer portions of the body to fall off
and lodge themselves in a downstream river bend.

Haleigh Search Update

Satsuma - Still acting on a lead received in the case of missing Haleigh Cummings, investigators are continuing the meticulous search for physical evidence in the St. Johns River near Satsuma, Florida. At this point, this search has failed to yield any items of evidentiary value in the case.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office has received many media inquiries concerning a rumor that has uncontrollably spread throughout our community. The rumor that a subject is either currently being detained by law enforcement, or is in law enforcement custody related to the Haleigh Cummings case has been reported to the media. Sheriff Hardy wants the citizens of Putnam County and the media to know that this rumor is false. There is currently no one in law enforcement custody as the result of the investigation into Haleigh Cumming's disappearance.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office will provide future releases when information in this case becomes available. Sheriff Hardy would like to again thank the citizens of Putnam County and the media for their support.

Antioch Man Says He Didn't Hurt Missing Fla. Girl
Joe Overstreet Questioned For Third Time

POSTED: 4:44 pm CDT April 14, 2010
UPDATED: 5:49 pm CDT April 14, 2010
<snipped>
Joe Overstreet, 20, has been under suspicion by some of his family for 14 months, he said, and he broke down while speaking for the first time about the investigation. "I'm sorry. I can't imagine what they're going through. I didn't do it," Overstreet said. "If I knew who did, I would straight call the cops and tell who did it."

Overstreet struggled Wednesday to maintain his composure as he talked about this case.

Sirgo and Overstreet said they are confident the facts will prove the man's innocence. They both drove to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday night to meet with investigators, who flew in from Florida. They stayed with them for about 40 minutes, Sirgo said.

"It was obviously a short interview, which means that there was no substantial change," said Sirgo. "I have a good idea of what they're going to do next."

Sirgo said the next move does not involve any action against his client, who he said has already suffered more than he should.

Search For Haleigh Intensifies, Arrest "Imminent"

Wednesday, April 14, 2010 9:51:49 PM

SATSUMA -- The search is on for a second straight day in Satsuma for Haleigh Cummings. Misty Croslin was taken to the search scene in handcuffs Wednesday afternoon.
A source close to the case told News 13 an arrest in the Cummings’ case is imminent.
Croslin is expected to testify against the person who will be arrested in exchange for a reduced sentence for her drug charges.
Croslin’s cousin, Joe Overstreet, was questioned by police for a third time Tuesday CNN reports.
Joe Overstreet lives in Tennessee, but was in Florida the night Haleigh was reported missing.
He was questioned by the FBI days after Haleigh's disappearance in February 2009.
Croslin has been in jail for weeks on unrelated drug charges.
She has been seen talking to authorities on the dock of the St. Johns River, while investigators spent a second day searching the river.

Putnam County authorities have released a statement saying that the search has not "yielded any items of evidentiary value in the case."

The Putnam County sheriff would not say why the river is being searched, but the television station is reporting that they're acting on a credible tip.

He said they went looking for a machine gun they were going to steal but learned it was gone, she said.

Croslin Jr., 23, told his grandmother they left but that Overstreet, 20, went back later.

Overstreet put a knife to Misty Croslin's throat and took Haleigh, Hollars said she was told.

"If she talked, he would kill her," Hollars said of Misty, now 18.

Vickie Sullivan, a daughter of Hollars' who was at the apartment Sunday, said Misty called from the St. Johns County jail about 15 minutes after her brother. She also said Overstreet had a knife at her throat and threatened to kill her and her family if she told he was there, Sullivan said

Hollars said Croslin Jr., who was crying as he told the story, said he didn't know what happened to Haleigh after she disappeared.

She said it was the wife of another family member who told them where to search in the waterway and woods off County Road 309 about five miles from where Haleigh was last seen in Satsuma.

Darkness, muck help keep river's secrets from Haleigh Cummings searchers
Police divers find those difficulties and more in the St. Johns.

Posted: April 14, 2010 - 11:29pm
By Steve Patterson

Imagine crawling in darkness over a trash-strewn hill of soft, shifting mud, feeling through muck for clues that could solve a terrible mystery.

And you're underwater.

That's something like the scenario police divers are facing this week as they scour the St. Johns River bottom for evidence about the 2009 disappearance of Haleigh Cummings, say divers who have searched the dark river before.

"It is an extremely difficult area," said Keith Holland, a Jacksonville dentist and diver who organized the yearslong task of finding and excavating the Civil War-era steamer Maple Leaf. The Union transport sank in 1864 off Mandarin Point, in 21 feet of water.
...........................
Though they're sometimes just yards away from docks, divers working near Satsuma in southern Putnam County have a lot working against them, said Holland, who owns a home a few miles from the search scene at the end of Shell Harbour Road.

The river bottom drops off quickly there, starting a few feet past the docks, he said.

Every foot deeper robs searchers of light, probably leaving them feeling their way blind in parts of the search area.

Cousin vs. cousin over Haleigh Cummings' disappearance
A jailed drug-trafficking suspect says a Tennessee man took the girl; the man, sobbing, says it’s a lie

April 14, 2010 - 11:38am
<snipped>
Last weekend, a grandmother said, she had to decide which of her grandsons to believe about what happened to Haleigh Cummings.

The first grandson, Hank “Tommy” Croslin Jr., called from jail saying his cousin entered the Satsuma trailer with a knife that night in February 2009 and left with 5-year-old Haleigh. The other, Joseph Overstreet, says he’s sorry for what the family is going through but swears he didn’t hurt the girl.

Ultimately, Flo Hollars says, she immediately called authorities, spurring a revived search for Haleigh and a quick trip by Putnam County detectives to Nashville, Tenn., to interview Overstreet. Hollars, 67, said she told Croslin Jr. she wanted the truth when he called her from jail, where the 23-year-old is being held on unrelated drug charges.

Looking for a machine gun
Overstreet said then he didn’t know who took Haleigh, and if he did, he would’ve called the police and told them. But Hollers said Croslin Jr. told her last weekend that he and Overstreet had gone to the mobile home where Misty was taking care of Haleigh and her younger brother.

He said they went looking for a machine gun they were going to steal but learned it was gone. Croslin Jr. told his grandmother they left but that Overstreet went back later and took Haleigh. “If she talked, he would kill her,” Hollars said of Misty, 18.

No suspects mentioned
Thousands of man-hours have gone into the case with hundreds of tips and multiple searches. For a weekend in September, authorities even drained a pond on Florida 19 south of Palatka but said they found no evidence. No suspects have ever been named.

Tuesday, Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy brought the families together to update them on the investigation. Connie Sheffield, stepmother to Haleigh’s mother, Crystal Sheffield, said Wednesday that about a dozen members of the Sheffield and Cummings families were together for the latest updates.

Though the two families have been at odds during the past year, she said they were all in the room together crying. Connie Sheffield said it was the first time the families had been called together as a group.

I am going to put the entire statement by Flo Hollers here as the main street media site REMOVED the statement from their article. However, now the article is a very condensed version of what was said and there is no indication that the website update the article.

In a dramatic jailhouse phone call to his grandmother Sunday, Hank "Tommy" Croslin Jr. blamed a cousin for the disappearance of Haleigh over a gun. That cousin had already been questioned in the beginning, cleared and now questioned again. He has maintained he had nothing to do with it and has not been arrested.

Flo Hollars, 67, said Croslin Jr. called her Nashville, Tenn., home from jail and said he and cousin Joseph Overstreet had gone to the mobile home where his sister Misty Croslin was taking care of Haleigh and the 5-year-old's younger brother.

The story came out after Hollars said she was tired of not knowing the truth and Croslin Jr. wanted to get it off his chest.

"I told him I know you failed your lie detector test," she said.

She said it was the wife of another family member who told them where to search in the waterway and woods off County Road 309 about five miles from where Haleigh was last seen in Satsuma.

Hollars said she called an investigator in Putnam County Sunday night with the information.

Shell Harbor area Search for Missing Haleigh Cummings Update
2010-4-15 by: Lt. Johnny Greenwood

At approximately 4:00 pm, Sheriff Jeff Hardy made a formal statement regarding the Haleigh Cummings Investigation. A synopsis of the statement is as follows:

Three days ago the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by divers from surrounding counties began a diligent search of the waterway and wooded area around the Shell Harbor Boat Ramp. The search is the result of information obtained during interviews in the Haleigh Cummings case. Items have been recovered at the search site, but at this point it is not known if these items are related to the Haleigh Cummings investigation. All items located during this search will be forwarded to several independent labs for analysis.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous inquiries regarding the status of this investigation, specifically if this is a missing person investigation or a homicide investigation. Over the past few weeks information has been obtained by investigators that lead them to believe Haleigh Cummings is most likely deceased. The specific details of this information cannot be released at this time.

There have been rumors spreading that a suspect has been taken into custody as the result of this investigation. This rumor is not true. However, the investigative team has identified persons of interest in this case.

Additional information will released as investigators determine it is prudent to do so.

JH: ...Shell Harbor Boat Ramp. This search is the result of information obtained during interviews of the Haleigh Cummings case. Items have been recovered at the search site, but at this point it is not known if these items are related to the Haleigh Cummings investigation. All items located during this search will be forwarded to several independent labs for analysis. The PCSO has received numerous inquiries regarding the status of this investigation, specifically if this is a missing person's investigation or a homicide investigation. Over the past few weeks, information has been obtained by investigators that lead them to believe that Haleigh Cummings is most likely deceased. The specific details of this information cannot, and I will add, will not, be released at this time. There have been rumors that a suspect has been taken into custody as a result of this investigation. This rumor is not true. However, the investigative team has identified PERSONS of interest in this case. Now I'm gonna go ahead and open up for some questions:

Q:Sir, can you tell me if you found a cinder block with a rope tied on it, and if you did, if it has anything to do with that tip that you got?
Ma'am we're not going to discuss anything of possible evidence that MIGHT have been located at the boat ramp, but thank you for your question.

Q: You've said all along that Misty is the key. Is that still the case?
Absolutely.

Q: Is it true this area has not been searched before?
This area has not been, you know we've searched lots of areas in Putnam County, but to say "did we put divers at this specific location" uh, the answer to that question would be no.

Q: Why not?
This is a huge river, and uh, we searched in areas surrounding the home uh that we believe she could have, uh, potentially been put in.

Q: Can you say anything more about what the tip was that led you to this spot?
Uh, the tip came from a source that led us to this area, and as we have in the past, we're gonna follow up on all leads and that, uh, is what led us to this area in for this dive that we have been doing for the last 3 days.

Q: Did that tip come from Tennessee?
No ma'am.

Q: Did it come from behind bars?
I'm not going to discuss where the tips came from....the leads came from. (added by me, he said tips and leads, plural)

Q: Can you tell us who those persons of interest are?
I will not be mentioning any names at this time.

Q: Can you tell us a little about Misty's visit yesterday?
Listen, people are starting to cooperate. That's why I've told people it's gonna be just a matter of time and we're going to accept any cooperation that we can get, so again, it's a good thing. People are starting to talk.

Q: How soon do you think this case can be solved?
We will follow this case to the end, and to give you a timeline on that, I'm not gonna do that.

Q: What kind of items are, like...are they little? Are you guys collecting little things too for analysis, like everything you see that might be something?
Absolutely. Let me tell you something. We've had something like 15, 25, 30 divers in this water every day. They have searched in zero/zero conditions using their bare hands, um, you know it's it's....a rough search. We've found everything from alligator toenails to, you know, you name it. We've pulled 'em out and we've looked at it and ... so.

Q: Sheriff, how likely is it, if she was in this river ... I'm generally speaking if she was in this river... how likely is it that you would actually find her with the gators and the current and the boats and the mud that you'd be able to find something that significant?
It's like looking for a needle in a haystack, but we were willing to go ahead and take the effort and the time to go look for that needle.

Q: Sheriff, you said some people are beginning to cooperate. Is Misty Croslin cooperating specifically and is there (helicopter noise drowns out rest of question).
As far as the cooperation goes, from who's cooperating and what plea bargains, I'm not here to talk about any of that. I dont' know of any plea bargain that's been offered to anybody. Just so you know.

Q: Do you think Haleigh died in this area?
It's our belief that this is, that's a ............. that's a very real possibility.

Q: Well, have you searched the land?
Yes, ma'am. We have searched the river banks obviously through due diligence we have went out and dived the area and searched on the other side of the river, searched this side of the river. Yeah...yeah, we've been there.

Q: How long are you gonna be staying out here?
We're getting ready to wrap up this search here today. We're gonna wrap it up about 6:00 this afternoon. And just because we're leaving here doesn't mean this lead isn't gonna be followed up any farther. We're gonna continue to run with the information that we have.

Q: Can you give an idea how long this analysis might take, and will it be, like, DNA type......can you talk a little about what kind of analysis will be (rest of question unclear).
A lot of the materials were analyzed on scene right there. We have an anthropologist, so a lot of the stuff that we had found was deemed non-evidence and we cleared it right there on the spot.

Q: If those items are not considered to be part of this case, do you still have a case against the person who likely killed Misty (sic)?
We are working on building a case. That's what we've been doing for the last 14 months.

Q: But without this physical evidence, do you still think you have a case?
Oh, yeah, we're working diligently to go forth with this, yes.

Q: But you did say you have items that you are getting analyzed, right?
Yes ma'am, and I'm not going to discuss the particular items that I've taken for analysis.

Q: How long are you going to be in this area?
Til 6:00 tonight. We're getting ready to shut this search down. And we're going to still continue forth with the leads that we have.

Q: The grandmother told us that her grandson Tommy gave her a confession saying he knows who did it and that it's Joe Overstreet in TN. What do you make of that story?
We've we've talked to Joe Overstreet in TN. We've interviewed him. We had two investigators from my agency, two agents from FDLE, and uh, we interviewed him again the other night, we've interviewed him before. He has an attorney and he's lawyered up.

Q: Do you consider this a homicide investigation or what?
At this point, I'm comfortable to go ahead and say I'm gonna call it a homicide.

Q: Is this a crime scene, would you call it that?
This right here, that's what we've been doing for the last three days. We've searched numerous areas in Putnam County. So we can't sit here and call every search area a crime scene.

Q: Sheriff, you say that you're building a case. Does that mean an arrest is imminent?
We're hoping to make an arrest in this case, let's be real about this, ok? Number 1, this case has been going on for 14 months. People are finally starting to talk. Where that's gonna lead us, I don't know. But we're gonna follow it to the end. And Yeah, we're trying to make an arrest, we're trying to bring somebody to justice for this little girl right here and her family. This is what it's about here today, not about me.

Q: How are they helping, what...how are they talking?

Well, they have a lot of time to sit and think about it.

Q: Early on in the investigation, they tracked Haleigh to the water's edge near the home.....
Right.

Q: Did dogs lead you to search this area?
No, it's been 14 months and the answer to that question is no.

Q: How many persons of interest or suspects do you have right now?
I'm just gonna say SEVERAL

Q: What did you learn from Misty at the dock yesterday?
That's information that's obviously going to be between me and my investigators.

Q: (question unclear)
....
If information becomes available, we'll search any area we have to.

Q: Can you at least explain her demeanor, have you seen a shift in her, Misty's demeanor?

Absolutely. Calmness, I think she's come to realize that...she's in trouble. I'm gonna take two more questions. So, I'm going to take 2 more questions.

Q: Has anything in the form of a body or (unclear) been found?
NO.

Q:How confident do you feel differently from 14 months ago ... do you feel like the case is getting stronger or do you feel it's about the same?
Well, we worked this case as hard as day one as today and to tell you how confident I am I'm confident I'm not gonna give up on this little girl and her family, so with that let's hope and pray that we can bring this thing to a logical conclusion for the family and thank you very much for coming.

rprtr- what kind of items, i mean are they little things , are you guys collecting little things for analysis? everything you see that might be something?

SH- absolutely, let me tell you something, weve had 15, 25, 30 divers in that water everyday. they have searched in zero, zero conditions, bare hands. its a rough search. we found everything from alligator toenails to you name it. and we pulled it out and looked at it. so

rprtr- if she wasin this river how likely would it be that you would find her with gators and the currents. how would you be able to find something that significant?

SH- its like looking for a needle in a haystack. but we were willing to go ahead and take the effort and the time to look for that needle

rprtr- u said that some people are beginning to cooperate. is misty croslin cooperating specifically and is there a plea bargain?

SH- as far as the cooperation goes, from who is cooperating and what plea bargains, im not here to talk aboutany of that. i dont know if any plea bargain has been offered to anybody, just so you know.

rprtr- do you think haleigh died in this area?
SH- its our belief that thats a real, real possibility.
rprtr- have u searched the land along this river
SH- yes mam. we have searched the river banks, obviously, through due diligence, and dived the area, and searched on the other side of the river and yeah weve been there.

rprtr- how long are you staying out here?
SH- we are getting ready to wrap up this search here today. wrap it up arond six oclock this afternoon and just because we're leaving here doesnt mean that this lead is not going to be followed up any farther. we are going to continue to run with any information that we have.

rprt- any idea how long this analysis might take and is it dna type. can you talk a little bit about the analysis.

SH- a lot of the materials were analyzed on scene right there. we had an anthropolgist on scene and so a lot of the stuff we had found was deemed non evidence and we cleared it right there on the spot.

sorry guys got tired. will try and finish rest in a few.

Divers continued their search in a murky river today for missing 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings, who disappeared in northeast Florida more than a year ago.

Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy said Wednesday there's no new information on the search itself in the St. John's River, or the tip that led to the latest round of dives.

A Florida girl went missing from her home in February of 2009. Authorities in her hometown think Joe Overstreet of Antioch could have answers concerning the disappearance of Haleigh Cummings.

Overstreet is the second man from Davidson County to be questioned in the case.

The attorney for Joe Overstreet said he's innocent. He stressed that Overstreet had nothing to do with the little girl's disappearance, and he's simply trying to help investigators gather all of the information they need.

A second straight day of searching the brown water of the St. Johns River Wednesday failed to turn up any evidence of Haleigh Cummings. Authorities indicated the search will continue Friday.

Meanwhile, a private investigator and former FBI agent said Wednesday he was the person who developed information that led to the search now being conducted off County Road 309 between Satsuma and Welaka in southeastern Putnam County.

"Information I developed led to what they started on Tuesday," said Steve Brown. "As to what they are looking for, you'll need to ask the Putnam County Sheriff's Office."
