Kidder had been Le's pastor until she graduated from Union Mine High School near Placerville and left for college. He said her family was seeking healing from Saturday's funeral and burial.

Lab technician Raymond Clark III has been charged with killing Le five days before her body was found on Sept. 13, the Sunday she was to marry Widawsky. She had been stuffed inside a wall in the basement of a research building in Yale's medical school complex.

The statement released by the university also contained details of Le's family life.

Mother bids emotional farewell at Yale student's funeral
updated 9:24 p.m. EDT, Sat September 26, 2009

"You were born in my loving embrace," said Le's mother, Vivian Van Le, reading a poem she'd written in Vietnamese to those gathered for the funeral at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in El Dorado Hills, California.

Chris Le -- her son and Annie Le's brother -- provided a translation.

"The most wonderful gift that God had sent to me. ... You left life at too young an age, at the beginning of many great things. All the dreams and hopes of your future gone with you to your resting place," Vivian Van Le said, according to her son.

Monsignor James C. Kidder told the mourners that "the worth of Annie's life was not its length, it was its intensity of love."

Annie Le Laid to Rest: 'She Contines to Shine'
Family and Friend Pay Tribute to Slain Yale University Grad Student
Sept. 26, 2009

Her funeral comes nearly two weeks to the day that Le's body was found stuffed into a basement wall inside the Yale University lab where she worked. It was the day she and Widawsky were supposed to be married.

"Although our beloved Annie is no longer with us she continues to shine and live deep in our hearts as we remember her graceful smiles and the fullness of life that she lived," said Bob Nguyen, Le's uncle who raised her.

ABC's Sacramento affiliate KXTV reported that Le's mother Vivian read a poem written after her daughter's murder.

"You left life at too young an age, at the beginning of many great things," Le's brother Chris read, translating the poem from Vietnamese to English. "All the dreams and hopes of your future gone with you to your resting place."

Le's pastor until she graduated from high school, Kidder told the AP that her interest in medical research was reflective of her outlook on life.

"She went into medicine because she wanted to help people as best she could," he said. "While she was a great achiever, she really showed that the great achievement she had was really to be more competent and passionate about caring for the sick ... research that she felt hopefully will bring cures."

"Annie was a caring individual who would selflessly put the needs of others before her own," the members of the lab wrote. "She would never say 'I can't', but always, 'How can I help?'"

Annie Le Laid To Rest

"We can ask a thousand whys for the rest of our lives and never really know the total meaning of such a tragic death," Kidder told the mourners as he stood above the poplar casket that was covered with a white shroud.

Le, a graduate student in pharmacology, was studying the role of enzymes in disease and was on track to earn a doctorate in 2013. But although she had a brilliant academic career and a promising future, her family and friends recalled Le's compassion, her bright smile and her positive personality.

"She always brought a smile to our faces, and even now that she is gone, I still cannot help but smile when I recall the times we shared together," said her cousin Dan Nguyen, who referred to himself as her brother. Le was born in San Jose and was raised by Nguyen's parents in Placerville.

"I miss you and I will always love you," Nguyen said.

Le's fiance, Jonathan Widawsky, attended the service but did not speak publicly. His father had his arm around Widawsky for much of the Mass. Vivian Le addressed Widawsky, saying, "Annie is gone but I still love you very much," and that she considers him as a son. He is a graduate student at Columbia University studying physics.

After the service, pall bearers wearing white gloves and white scarves carried the casket to the hearse. It left the church, followed by family members, for a private burial at an undisclosed cemetery.

"Roid rage is one of the working theories," a police source said. "What's clear is that he got off on giving the smart students a hard time. The guy was a glorified janitor but he was a major control freak."

Janet Stonier, whose son was Clark's high school classmate, told The ENQUIRER that the lab tech's family was worried about the way he'd suddenly fly off the handle.

"A family friend told me he's been doing steroids lately," said Janet.

A judge has extended for two weeks the sealing of search warrant affidavits in the case of a lab technician accused of killing Yale University graduate student Annie Le.

New Haven Superior Court Judge Roland Fasano on Monday extended the sealing, which was requested by prosecutors, until Oct. 12.

Attorneys for Raymond Clark III, who is accused of killing Le, have asked the court to keep his arrest warrant affidavit also sealed from public view. The affidavit was originally sealed for 14 days, until Oct. 1.

Clark's attorneys push to seal warrant
Published Monday, September 28, 2009
<snipped>
Public defenders for Clark, a 24-year-old Yale animal technician, filed a motion in Superior Court on Thursday asking for the arrest warrant in the case to remain sealed for an indefinite period of time.

One of Clark’s attorneys, Joseph Lopez, said that the public defenders want to keep the warrants sealed until the lawyers on both sides of the case have had the opportunity to review all the documentation associated with the case. At the time of Clark’s arrest, Superior Court Judge Jon C. Blue placed the warrant under seal for 14 days at the request of the State’s Attorney’s Office.

“Our position is two things,” Lopez said. “It’s standard practice in these high-profile cases to seal the warrant, but we want to take a look at all the police reports and all the stuff before it gets out to the public.”

Lopez added that the defense wants to conduct its own investigation before information is publicly released.

Lopez and the other public defender in the case, Beth Merkin, wrote in the motion that “the disclosure of the information contained in the arrest warrant affidavit would irreparably prejudice the defendant’s state and federal constitutional rights to an impartial jury and to a fair trial.” They added that this “must override the public’s interest in viewing the warrant affidavit.”

Clark’s next court date is on Oct. 6, at which time the judge in the case, Roland Fasano, will probably schedule a hearing for the motion, Lopez said.

Le is remembered at funeral service
Published Monday, September 28, 2009

Le’s uncovered casket was brought in by her brothers and cousins, Nguyen among them, who dressed in black suits with white scarves and gloves.

Members of Le’s family — including her mother, siblings and maternal great-uncle — gave eulogies in Le’s memory. Her fiancé, Jonathan Widawsky, whom Le was supposed to marry on the day her body was found, looked on stoically.

Le’s mother, Vivian Van Le, addressed him directly, saying, “Jon, even now Annie is gone, but I still have you. I love you very much.” She then read a poem in Vietnamese, which Le’s brother Christopher translated: “Farewell, my child,” it began. “You are here lying in the cold coffin.”

Graduate School Dean Jon Butler, who attended the funeral, said he was touched by Le’s family’s tributes to her life.

The bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento, Jaime Soto, referenced the violent nature of Le’s death. An autopsy report concluded that Le had been strangled.

“We do not let cruelty or violence own the sorrow,” Soto said. “We let love own the sorrow. It was Annie’s love for her family and friends, for her fiancé, that give us such sorrow, as well as our love for her.”

As the service concluded with the hymn “Be Not Afraid,” the guests filed out of the white-walled church. Outside, Le’s mother wept.

There was a private graveside service following the mass. Yale will hold a memorial service for Le on Oct. 12 at Battell Chapel.

Tears, Songs Mark Annie Le's Funeral
September 27, 2009

In eulogies, Le's family and pastor tried to reconcile the young woman's vibrant life with her violent death.

"We could ask a thousand whys for the rest of our life," said her pastor, Monsignor James Kidder.

In the weeks since Le's death, her family has kept largely out of the media glare, even as the case captivated the nation. On Saturday, more than a dozen journalists from across the country stood outside of the ceremony.

In a statement to the media before the Mass, Kidder said the family hoped that the funeral would be "a chance for the family to come to reconciliation with something that is humanely irreconcilable: not only the fact that Annie died, but the way she died."

"There's a lot of mystery in this for me," Kidder added. He said that in an effort to understand Le's death, he had looked "to the center" of his faith.

Our beloved Annie continues to live deep in our hearts as we remember her graceful smile and the fullness of life with which she lived," he said.

Not long afterward, the family trailed behind while eight pallbearers wearing white scarves, white gloves and white roses took Le's shiny poplar casket to a waiting hearse.

She was buried in nearby Rescue.

The highly-charged world of medical research
September 28, 2009 5:35 p.m
<snipped>
Recently, we have been reading about the tragic and chilling death of Yale graduate student Annie Le. Her story is intricately tied in with its setting, a state-of-the-art research lab in the basement of a Yale building. The stakes are huge at this level of research; for example, normally a police investigation into such an incident would involve sealing off the building, but that did not happen in this case. The police said, "These experiments have not just financial value, but also enormous scientific value that many people with medical issues are depending on." Another aspect of work in this setting has come to light, which are the tensions between co-workers, and especially between researchers and technicians, as described in this New York Times article. There is speculation that these tensions may have led to Le's death.

While slated to graduate in 2004, Clark is not listed or shown in a photo as a member of the senior class in the 2004 Milestone, the school’s yearbook. One year later, the BHS 2005 Milestone includes one photo of Clark as a member of the BHS varsity baseball squad. However, Clark was not listed or shown in a photo as a member of the Class of 2005. A request to BHS administration for verification of Clark’s high school graduation date had not been answered as of press time.

Clark's Attorneys Seek To Keep Search Warrant Affidavits Sealed
October 1, 2009
<snipped>
Attorneys for the lab technician accused of killing Yale University graduate student Annie Le asked the court Wednesday to keep search warrant affidavits in the case sealed from public view.

In Wednesday's defense motion filing, public defenders Beth A. Merkin and Joseph E. Lopez said that "disclosure of the information contained in the search warrant affidavits would irreparably prejudice the defendant's state and federal constitutional rights to an impartial jury and to a fair trial, and that this interest must override the public's interest in viewing the warrant affidavits."

Merkin and Lopez have already filed a motion asking the court to keep Clark's arrest warrant affidavit sealed from public view.

Univ. to update safety policies
Published Thursday, October 1, 2009
<snipped>
As part of a comprehensive effort to improve workplace safety, University officials are implementing emergency communication in basement areas and expanding employee background checks, University President Richard Levin wrote in an e-mail to faculty and staff Wednesday.

Although Yale officials believe their public safety program is “robust,” many workers have expressed concerns about security on campus after the murder of Annie Le GRD ’13, Levin wrote. The extra security measures he announced in the e-mail — including the expansion of late-night escort services — will help to assuage the workers’ concerns, he added.

“Any incident like this horrible tragedy makes us want to review our systems and see if there are any areas of improvement,” University Vice President and Secretary Linda Lorimer said in an interview Wednesday.

Both Vice President for Human Resources and Administration Michael Peel and Deputy Secretary Martha Highsmith, who oversees Yale security, will be in charge of reviewing and amending campus safety policies in the upcoming months, Levin wrote. Peel could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday night.

The e-mail comes less than a week after Yale officials announced a workplace safety campaign in the University’s human resources newsletter. Full details of the campaign have yet to be determined, but Yale officials have been soliciting ideas for improvements.

The Courant is fighting against keeping court documents sealed from public view in the state's case against Raymond Clark III, the lab technician accused of killing 24-year-old Yale graduate student Annie Le.

Attorneys for The Courant today will file a motion in Superior Court to intervene, opposing an earlier request from Clark's public defenders that seeks to extend a seal on the arrest warrant affidavit, which contains information that led police to arrest Clark in connection with the strangulation of Le.
