MEDICAL EXAMINER RULES ALEX PRETTI DEATH A HOMICIDE -1 - dead after Minneapolis shooting involving immigration agents, US Jan 24, 2026

Alessandro Zan, a lawmaker for Italy’s opposition Democratic Party, wrote Tuesday that it would be “paradoxical to entrust” Olympics security “to those who are themselves criminals, operating with violence and killing innocent people in cold blood,” referring to ICE.

“In Italy, we do not want those who trample on human rights and act outside of any democratic control. It is unacceptable to think that an agency of this kind could have any role whatsoever in our country,” he wrote on X.

of course, everyone has a bias. we all have opinions, experiences, prejudice. i would look at the victim who is a pro life protester differently, that’s true, but i think and hope i would still take a step back and see that such treatment of any human being is wrong, and also very worrying when it seems to be part of a bigger pattern of violence.
Well said.

Republican congressman Andrew Garbarino, chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, announced that Todd Lyons, head of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will testify at a public oversight hearing next month.

In a statement, Garbarino announced that Lyons, ICE’s acting director, will appear before the panel on 10 February alongside US Customs and Border Protection commissioner Rodney Scott and US Citizenship and Immigration Services director Joseph Edlow.

“The hearing will provide an opportunity to conduct oversight of each agency and ensure they are fulfilling their duty to protect the homeland as part of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) core mission,” he said.

The committee had invited Lyons, Scott and Edlow to testify before Pretti was shot and killed, but followed up with a formal request on Saturday.

Alex Pretti suffered broken rib in confrontation with federal agents a week before he was fatally shot - CNN

CNN has learned that federal immigration officers have been collecting personal information about protesters in Minneapolis – and had documented details about Alex Pretti before he was fatally shot on Saturday.

It is unclear how Pretti first came to the attention of federal authorities. But sources told CNN that about a week before his death, Pretti “suffered a broken rib when a group of federal officers tackled him while he was protesting their attempt to detain other individuals”.

Per CNN’s report: “The earlier incident started when [Pretti] stopped his car after observing Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents chasing what he described as a family on foot, and began shouting and blowing his whistle, according to a source who asked not to be named out of fear of retribution.

Pretti later told the source that five agents tackled him, and one leaned on his back — an encounter that left him with a broken rib. The agents quickly released him at the scene.

“‘That day, he thought he was going to die,’ said the source.

“Pretti was later given medication consistent with treating a broken rib, according to records reviewed by CNN.”

DHS did not respond to CNN’s questions about Pretti’s previous encounter or more details about efforts to collect information on protesters.

A memo sent earlier this month to agents temporarily sent to Minneapolisinstructed them to “capture all images, license plates, identifications, and general information on hotels, agitators, protestors, etc., so we can capture it all in one consolidated form,” according to correspondence reviewed by CNN.

So Pretti had a history of interfering with federal law enforcement.
It is also funny the comments about federal agencies collecting information. Reminds me of back in the Obama era when the ATF and FBI used local law enforcement to collect license plate info of people that attended gun shows. Illegal? California complied and worked with those agencies, including ICE.

Trump commented on the investigation into Pretti's death before boarding Marine One on Tuesday, taking a different tone than he had initially.

"I'm looking at that whole situation," Trump said. "I love everybody. I love all of our people. I love his family. And it's a very sad situation."

still wishing for an explanation describing in what specific way the victim in this case interfered with ICE agents.

Two U.S. citizens have been gunned down in an American city by agents under her watch. I'm shocked she is still in her position. With her comments, she has earned widespread mistrust in her intrigrity and competency.

Can you kindly point out where in that article it says he was "interfering" with these Feral agents, please?

Blaming Alex Pretti for his own death for lawfully carrying a concealed gun which he never made a motion to unholster, is a bit like blaming MLK Jr for walking out on that balcony. Or JFK driving through Dealey Plaza.
Pretti chose to twice intervene in law enforcement operations that did not involve him. MLK was a man that advocated for peaceful protest. I find it disgusting that Pretti is compared to MLK or JFK.

All I see is biased victim blaming to be quite honest...jmo.

Can you cite any statues that state blowing a whistle or helping a woman who was shoved down up are legally considered interference in law enforcement operations? Especially point 2, considering the woman was not ICE’s target, just a random victim of LE brutality.

ETA: I already know that blowing a whistle and shouting are constitutionally protected, so I guess I’m just more curious on count 2.

There is no "humanitarian duty" to interfere with federal immigration officers who are following the law and arresting illegal immigrants.
How did Alex interfere with the officers?

I think there’s a line of thinking where any time a person is within close proximity of a federal agent, they must be “interfering”. It doesn’t matter that ICE agents are targeting schools, daycare centers, restaurants, etc. All places where people are just existing, living their lives. ICE has descended upon this community and by all accounts from people who live there, made it very hard to exist normally. Besides the incident where the agents finger was bitten, I haven’t seen any reports of protestors being violent. But we have many reports of ICE agents being violent, and 2 US citizens dead.

As a real flesh and blood protestor, I can assure you we are not being paid. We are taking time out of our day and away from our family to stand up for the rights of all, including those who wish us harm.
And I commend you, be safe out there.

MLK was shot and killed despite being a peaceful protestor, so I’d say there’s quite a few parallels between him and AP.

How did Alex interfere with the officers?
He ‘shouted and blew a whistle’ according to the article I read, which is protected speech/protected forms of protest. He was tackled for it, which is NOT the appropriate response from ICE officers. I am astounded at the absolute lack of responsibility some are placing on ICE for their inappropriate actions, and instead blaming civilians for their legal actions.

What has happened so far since the shooting of Alex Pretti

Sakshi Venkatraman
US reporter

We're covering several different developments related to the situation in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where on Saturday, US Border Patrol agents shot and killed 37-year-old US citizen Alex Pretti.

Here's what has happened so far:

  • US Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino, who has been the face of the immigration enforcement operation, is set to leave Minneapolis today along with several agents. He will be replaced by White House border czar Tom Homan, who will now lead the crackdown
  • Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended federal agents and called Pretti a "domestic terrorist". She has now been called to testify before Congress in March over her handling of the case
  • Pretti, an ICU nurse, was shot at around 09:00 local time on Saturday in Minneapolis after an altercation with federal agents
  • Federal officials say Pretti approached agents with a weapon - but BBC Verify's analysis of footage from the scene reveals he was only holding a phone
  • The killing, the second in Minneapolis in the last three weeks, has triggered nationwide outrage and sparked mass protests in the city
  • It follows the shooting death of Renee Good, another US citizen and Minneapolis resident, killed by federal agents earlier this month
  • Meanwhile, a federal judge has ordered acting ICE director Todd Lyons to appear in court on Friday to explain a separate matter: why an immigration detainee has not had a bond hearing in the court-ordered timeframe
  • President Donald Trump will be speaking about the US economy in Iowa at approximately 16:00 ET, and we'll be listening for any comments relating to events in Minnesota
  • Earlier, Trump said he still has confidence in Noem, telling reporters she has done "a very good job"
