They were found dead inside black rubbish bags by the side of the road between the city of Ciudad Juarez and the town of El Porvenir, in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, on January 17.

The couple, whose ages were not given, lived in the city of El Paso, across the border in the southern state of Texas, and got married on July 20, 2021.

They had three young children, two girls and a boy, who are now orphans.

The names and ages of the children have not been released to protect their privacy, and it was not revealed if they were adopted or if they were either woman's biological children and were conceived using a donor.

The authorities found the couple's dismembered bodies by the side of the road, and their relatives had to be called in to identify the butchered remains of their loved ones.

Several LGBTQ+ communities have reportedly called justice over the double homicide, and the governor of Chihuahua, Maru Campos, has vowed that the case will not go unpunished.

The two deaths bring the number of women killed in Juarez, Mexico, in the past three days to four.

One woman in the second discovery was found dead at the scene.

The second woman was found alive, crying, but later died, according to Juarez officials.

According to El Diario, the women were both tortured and shot.

They were discovered in the Cuauhtémoc y Nombre de Dios intersection in the Patria-Zaragoza neighborhood.

El Diario reports the women were 30 and 35 years in age; both remain unidentified.

I would say that they most likely travelled to Mexico. The Facebook link identifies Ramirez as being from Ciudad Juarez, but lives in El Paso.

Likewise, the other victim appears to use her maternal name- second last name, which is the traditional Hispanic name usage.

The use of the second last name by one victim (US Hispanics rarely use it outside of Puerto Rico) and the Facebook information imply direct ties to Mexico. This, in turn, increases possibility that they had visited Mexico and were kidnapped there.

Or even killed in Texas and then just dumped in Mexico. Probably not likely. The dismembering of bodies and leaving in bags is a common cartel SOP. Regardless, its horrific.

Back in 2021, a large number of Americans were murdered in Mexico, such as Alexandra Morales. The Georgia teacher's body was found on the side of a road in Guadalajara in November. In June, a Texan mom and her two kids went missing on Mexico's "highway of death" between Monterrey to Nuevo Laredo. The nation has been struggling with an extremely high rate of gang violence for decades, which hasn't stemmed. Just around 20 days into 2022, authorities in Ciudad Juarez are reportedly investigating over 60 murders.

Police say the couple was tortured before being shot and killed and their bodies were dismembered and discarded in garbage bags. On January 18, the news led protesters to march through the city reportedly chanting "The street and the night also belong to us." Infamously known for its drug violence and gender-based violence, Juarez has seen an extremely large number of killings each year.

Since the couple appears to be Mexican, the US has not gotten involved yet. There's no word from officials in the federal government or from those in El Paso.

The Chihuahua Attorney General’s Office earlier said the women were killed because of their “economic activities and individuals they associated with.” However, in a Monday news release announcing the arrests, the AG’s Office did not specify why, exactly, the couple was murdered.

The state police’s Crime Against Women Unit investigated the case. The arrests took place after a search warrant allegedly found evidence at the crime scene where the murders were committed.

The Attorney General’s Office said more information would be forthcoming later, to ensure “complete transparency in the procurement of justice.”

The suspects are scheduled to appear at a pre-trial hearing in Juarez on Jan. 28.

At least some arrests have been made. The murder of women in Mexico, especially Juarez is just staggering and I believe something like 95% go unsolved. It difficult for me to wrap my head around this. Gang violence in the US is horrific as well, but at least they usually target their violence against other gang members (although they end up killing a LOT of innocent bystanders as well). But in Mexico, the gangs/cartels seem intentionally target innocent people. I'm not sure if this is out of paranoid thinking they are affiliated with other gangs, or if its just part of the plan to instill terror among the population.

Chihuahua police arrested a man and a woman in the torture, dismemberment and murder of an El Paso same-sex couple. The charge, according to the El Paso Times, is femicide.

Police didn’t release a motive but women’s groups and LGBTQ groups have called it a hate crime.

The mutilated bodies were found in trash bags along a highway about 30 miles southeast of Juarez, according to local TV reports. Juarez is across the Rio Grande from El Paso.

The couple was murdered at a home in San Isidro, which is southeast of Juarez. Police found evidence of the murders taking place in the house, but didn’t release information about what that evidence is.

It could be that this couple did do this, involved in something else sketchy, and disposed of the bodies this way thinking the police would assume it was cartel and thus, not ask too many questions or investigate.

I think some of the over kill violence against innocents is due to Cartel organization:

Evidently each drug cartel runs several affiliated street gangs. The street gangs are autonomous pursue their lower level criminal interests, but serve cartel general interests. They also serve as a "talent" pool for the cartel and source of manpower and muscle.

A similar analogy would be Major League baseball and minor league farm teams. Chinese triads in NYC and SF followed a similar model where each Triad faction was associated with one or more street gangs. "Talented" gang members could then be promoted to Triad membership.

Anyways.....

One way to impress the Cartel is to be absolutely ruthless in pursuit of "business". This then leads to over kill violence against those failing to pay protection money, those who dont share money sent by family in the U.S., those who even mildly speak out etc. "Collateral damage" is no problem.

The above, coupled with a corrupt / intimidated law enforcement system in Mexico then leads to snow balling violence and the desire to "out do" rivals.

In contrast, the US has effective law enforcement. So.... when a Chinatown gang in NYC responded to a restaurant owners refusal to pay protection money by murdering three innocent dinner diners, the sponsoring Triad made sure that it was a "one of" - never to be repeated. In Mexico, that does not happen. Rather, violence escalates.
