''In a rare example of justice being done for victims of forced “disappearances” in Mexico, three Mexicans found guilty in the disappearance of Canadian snowbird Malcom Madsen more than four years ago will likely spend the rest of their lives in prison.

Madsen’s Mexican girlfriend of six years, Marcela Acosta Ramos, 48, her son Andrés Javier Romero Acosta, 30, and brother Martin Alejandro Acosta Ramos, 51, were each sentenced this week to 56 years and three months in a Mexican prison.

The sentence follows their conviction last week of the crime of “disappearance committed by individuals,” a charge employed when the fate of the missing person is unknown.''

“The length of the sentences clearly indicates how seriously the judges take this crime,” says Madsen’s daughter, Brooke Mullins, noting her father is just one of more than 100,000 people currently listed as “missing” in Mexico.''

This documentary is well worth watching. It illustrates the incredible frustration and roadblocks incurred by the family in having Malcolm‘s disappearance investigated. Not everyone can afford $300k to seek justice for a loved one. I greatly admire the daughter’s perseverance.

“Brooke Mullins, Madsen's daughter, spent the last half-decade as an amateur sleuth, uncovering clues and details about his disappearance in an effort to piece together what happened. Mullins, who is from Port Hope, Ont., spent an estimated $300,000 on flights to Mexico, legal help, informants and even bribes as she searched for her father…..

…..The documentary Malcom is Missing follows Mullins' journey through a corrupt system of disinterested Mexican authorities, ignored and erased evidence and a shocking "smoking gun" video of her father being drugged that didn't seem to move the official investigation an inch.

When her father first disappeared, Mullins flew to Mexico to find him, unaware it would launch a years-long battle full of legal and emotional challenges. “

But years later, Mullins continues her search through Mexico’s legal system to recover her father’s remains and bring justice to his case — a journey that author Robert Osborne recounts in his forthcoming book, Malcom Is Missing: A True Story of Murder and a Daughter’s Quest for Justice in Mexico. Based on the acclaimed CBC documentary of the same name, the book is out this April from Rocky Mountain Books.

A single mother of two from small-town Canada looks for her missing father in Mexico and ends up taking on one of the most corrupt justice systems in the world. In October 2018, Brooke Mullins packed a light bag and flew to Mexico. Not for a vacation. Five days earlier she’d received word that her father, Malcom, was missing. With a strong feeling that something was definitely wrong, Brooke went looking for him.It took her only a few days to discover he’d probably been murdered. She found a grainy “smoking gun” video of her father being drugged, a GPS tracker on her father’s car showed it spent hours in a remote jungle location the night he went missing and several disturbing emails demanding money. She turned it all over to the Mexican police and believed her amateur sleuthing days were done. But three years and $200,000 later, it’s still not over. Despite the emotional and legal challenges, Brooke has fought on fueled by two goals — finding her father’s remains and seeing his killers are brought to justice. Some would say taking on the famously corrupt Mexican justice system is a long shot for the slightly built, 42-year-old single mother of two from Port Hope, Ontario. Brooke Mullins dismisses those thoughts and continues to fight.''
