Sounds like he met with foul play on the road back to town. Maybe looking for supplies

I am puzzled whey Herzog didn't stay with the plane. The Air Force would have mounted a search for the plane, and seeing an aircraft on the ground would be easier than trying to locate a person. Also, the plane would have given him some shelter, plus he would have some water on board the plane for drinking. I presume that the radio on the plane would have been out of range of any Air Force bases?
