Max Watson, 28, has been missing since the Dec. 18 while hiking in the peninsula’s Sierra de la Laguna mountains. He was last seen getting into a vehicle with two people.

Described by friends as an adventurer, Watson had been hiking in the area east of the Pacific Coast town of Todo Santos. Watson’s white 1994 van was found east of there, and he was last seen getting into a car near La Buerra. Watson told family before Christmas he would be hiking in the area. He is familiar with the Sierras and is described by friends as a competent hiker and outdoorsman.

Watson, a designer with the skateboard company Moonshine, spends his winters in Baja. He is described as 5-10, 145 pounds, with long blond hair and blue eyes.

“While Max’s van was found at the trailhead near the La Buerra trailhead on the west side of the Sierra de La Laguna mountains, Picacho can also be accessed from the east side at the trail head called San Dionisio. Max was seen entering a car near where he parks his van near La Buerra and it is possible he got a ride/shuttle to the east side of the mountains to access Picacho from the eastern trailhead San Dionisio. Max’s family and friends have said this is the type of adventure he would do.”

Foster added that San Dionisio canyon, to the east, was searched Jan. 1-3 by about 15 U.S. volunteers with several Mexican guides and volunteers, but volunteers will only be able to cover a small percentage of the area.

Watson told friends before Christmas that he would be hiking in the area. Friends say he is familiar with the area and is a competent hiker and outdoorsman.

Before Dec. 15, Watson had gone on a couple of short multiday hiking trips into the Sierra de la Laguna range. At the end of one of those trips, he had hitchhiked from the trailhead and gotten a ride from a rancher who lived in the area. He was last seen by the rancher and his wife on Dec. 18 getting into a vehicle with an unknown couple and telling the rancher that he was going back into the mountains to climb Mount Picacho. According to Watson’s girlfriend, he had been “roughing it” and sleeping on the ground in the mountains and was not hiking with a large backpack, tent or sleeping bag.

Baja search focuses on mystery couple who gave missing man a ride

[...]

He was last seen by a rancher when Watson parked his van at the ranch before getting into a gray or silver car in which a Caucasian couple were traveling on or about December 18.

The ranch is located about five kilometers from the La Burrera trailhead to the Sierra de Laguna mountains, an area that has already been searched extensively, according to Wiley Watson, the missing man’s brother.

“At this point we believe finding the couple that last saw Max alive and gave him a ride is critical,” said Watson, “We need to hear from anyone that was visiting the Sierra de la Laguna mountains east of Todos Santos on December 18 or may know anything about who this mystery couple was.”
