Oh I know. I didn't mean that he flagrantly did something outrageous to end up being murdered for. Your reasons make sense. He blended in and didn't appear to be an American tourist. Who knows, though, if that would have changed anything. I wrote the above post before I read about the actual person responsible for his death. Sounds like if you cross paths with this monster, death is inevitable. My brain is having a difficult time dealing with the untimely death of this innocent man who just happened to be somewhere he was noticed and this murderer thought he shouldn't be there.
He didn’t blend in. That area is a Sinaloa Cartel stronghold. The minute he showed up they knew he wasn’t a local. He may have said or did something that made the narcos think he wasn’t a simple tourist but most likely was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Such a senseless tragic loss. QEPD.

You could not pay me to go to Mexico.
I have friend who go to Mexico City regularly for Lucha Libre and they rave about how nice the locals are.It is not uncommon for them to post photos eating dinner with friends and their families.

I was reiterating what another post said about him possibly blending in, and also about him speaking Spanish fluently. He had traveled to Mexico and south many times it seems. It boggles my mind that he would be killed for no apparent reason, but then it seems parts of Mexico are what's that all about. I agree, it is a senseless tragedy.

It’s reported that he was killed on October 28. That’s the day he was missing. If he’s been deceased all this time then the searching wouldn’t have been the cause of his death. Jmo

No but the threats to search further into their territory and deeper into their territory with Black Hawks May have made them come to the decision to offer up the info that he has been killed to stop them looking further and to stop them seeing and discovering their growing operations. And ultimately to prevent more bloodshed because they know the Cartels will kill whoever encroaches into their territory no matter who it is . If this happened then it would bring too much heat on the Mexican Police ( corrupt ones ) and wouldn’t be good at all. They don’t need it not want it .
I presume that is what the OP LONETRAVELLER was referring to in their WS post about the Black Hawks searching .

I’m not having a ‘rant’ against anyone on here ( my wonderful fellow WS) but it really gets my goat ( bugs me ) when it’s said “The victim was in the wrong place at the wrong time “.....

No actually he wasn’t. He was in the right place at the right time..

The evil piece of scum that took his life was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Not Mr Braxton Andrew

Sorry- I shall compose myself now!

RIP

I'm sorry that it upsets you to hear that. To me, it's like going for a hike into the desert. It's dangerous to assume there will be public water fountains and restaurants, just like back home, so you don't need to bring any food or water.

I'm very sorry for this young man and his death, he certainly was innocent, posed no threat to anyone, and shouldn't have been killed.

I've never been to Urique, but I've explored it online as a possible destination, one stop on the very popular Copper Canyon railway trip. Expats live there and tourists safely visit, though it's way down at the bottom of the canyon, so off the beaten track. There's a famous marathon there that attracts 700 ultrarunners from around the world every year, who run through the wild hills on a predefined trail.

But, I have read many warnings to stick to the town and main roads, and take a local guide if you plan to hike outside those areas, otherwise you may run into people involved with the drug trade.

For many of us who travel to Mexico, the level of fear and outright paranoia some people have about the country is absurd - 40 million tourists visited in 2017: 40 million! So then some people assume all the warnings are pure paranoia, and the whole country is completely safe to explore. Some young travellers particularly enjoy boldly going where no tourist has gone before.

Between black and white are innumerable shades of gray. Unfortunately, it's now been confirmed those warnings about wandering outside Urique were accurate. The killer may have thought Patrick was a spy from the DEA or a rival gang, or something like that.

RIP Patrick.

A Wonderfu l yet insightful and compassionate post - thank you.
I have read about the ultra runner event , founded by an American who adopted the area as his own. - ‘Micah’ Caballo Blanco, who has sadly now died, and the Tarahumara people. So awe inspiring!

I'm still curious why he left the hotel at 4pm. and where he was headed. Since he didn't take his camera, was it really a hike? I don't think so. (I'm not suggesting anything nefarious on his part) but imo he was going somewhere. Where and why?

Missing North Carolina Teacher Was Killed In Mexico By Drug Trafficker: Governor (with clip)
Patrick Braxton-Andrew, who taught high school Spanish, vanished during a walk in Chihuahua late last month.

"A North Carolina high school teacher reported missing in Mexico last month was murdered by a local drug trafficker, authorities said, ending a desperate weeks-long search by his family and friends.

The man, Patrick Braxton-Andrew, 34, taught Spanish at a private school in Mooresville, about 30 miles north of Charlotte. He regularly visited Latin America and was traveling solo in the state of Chihuahua when he vanished on Oct. 28 during an afternoon walk in the town of Urique, his family said.

Chihuahua Gov. Javier Corral, in a statement released Sunday, said Braxton-Andrew was killed by drug dealer José Noriel Portillo Gil, also known as “El Chueco” (the Crooked), in an area that’s controlled by the powerful Sinaloa cartel. That organized crime gang was headed by the notorious drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman until his arrest. It’s not clear whether Braxton-Andrew was directly killed by Portillo Gil or one of his associates...."

Missing teacher found shot to death on dirt road, Mexican officials say

A North Carolina teacher who disappeared in Mexico last month has been found shot to death on a dirt road, according to Mexican officials.

[...]

Braxton-Andrew's body was found about a mile away from the road leading to the village of Guapalayna to Las Lajas in Urique, according to a press release by the Chihuahua state government. The area had already been searched, so officials believe his body was placed there. His body had traces of reddish dirt and pine leaves, but had been placed on a stony surface in an area that lacked vegetation, officials said.

Autopsy result showed that Braxton-Andrew died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to the release. Local authorities are continuing to investigate his death.

The state's attorney general's office told ABC News last week that investigators found a blood trail during the search and his family had submitted DNA to perform a test.

Horrifying to picture what his simple desire to take a hike in a beautiful area turned into. I often wish there was another planet where we could send all the evil people in this world and let them duke it out among their evil selves. And leave the rest of us alone. And then people like Patrick would be safe. This just angers me. My condolences to his family and friends. RIP PBA.
