JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — "He is a very caring person, an amazing friend. He talks to anyone. He's very humble," Debbie Sosa described her friend Robert Cantrell. "We've been friends for close to 30 years."

Sosa lives in Miami. Cantrell, 62, lives in Jacksonville.

She says she and he, who is a retired psychologist, attended a gala together in Los Angeles June 17th. Sosa said that was the last time she saw him.

When was Robert supposed to return home? Did he miss his return flight? Hopefully he's safe.

Oh wow. That video is very upsetting and his appearance is jarring compared to the shared pictures put out by family previously. I didn’t make it all the way through but I feel that it’s a good sign he made it to an ambulance. Could he be in a hospital in Mexico? I have a feeling there is more information about his whereabouts out there, but it’ll take the right people/authorities to be able to get more answers. So scary for his family.

Also- to me, the first clue that he wasn’t in his right state of mind could’ve been that he missed his flight June 18… but then it’s odd that he would’ve been capable of re-booking two days later if he missed the original flight due to some kind of medical/neurological event. Although his daughter did say that his flight path made no sense.

I also think the fact that he went to a gala just days (one day?) before he went to California is interesting and could give some insight into a type of potential medical event if that’s what we’re seeing in the video. All my opinion and based on my experiences (as an adult/geriatric APRN).

is it possible he's in a hospital somewhere? he was definitely having a medical event - very worrisome

"He doesn’t have a shirt on doesn’t have shoes, as reported in that video,” Lauren said. “He just, he couldn’t even speak in like coherent sentences. And the things that he was saying were just not true. His eyes looked like crazed. I think there’s something wrong. He also had like lesions on his body. That’s what it’s been described as in that group.”

why would an ambulance take him to the embassy instead of a hospital? I guess they thought he was ok physically?

he's got blood spatter so some kind of assault (and robbery) happened and caused mental trauma IMO

thank goodness for the kindness of that cab driver

The more I read the more I’m wondering what his original travel plans were? Because June 20 is about 2.5 weeks ago, and according to the Texas Equusearch flyer, that’s the date he was seen in the El Torito neighborhood before disappearing under suspicious circumstances.

Also more on how much his appearance has changed in a short time- first is from a reporter’s post w a pic of him taken the day before he was to fly to Cancun (6/17) at the gala, second is from the local missing poster.

Another article with additional info:

From the above:

“"We’ve been following-up on all the back stories and figuring out a lot of information. All we know is we have a lot of conflicting information," Kay Harvey with Equusearch told First Coast News. She said a video has surfaced that shows Cantrell only in shorts. In it, he has no belongings. He appears dazed and confused.

First Coast News has not been able to independently verify this video, but the video is concerning to Harvey and Sosa.

Harvey said, "We know he has been without his blood pressure medicine."

"I have called the embassy, consulate, FBI, private investigators in Miami and Cancun," Sosa said she has received no help from them.”

They're hoping that he is still alive. He vanished on June 20 and today it's July 6.

What happened on June 17 and why did he miss his June 18 flight? Is it confirmed that he was last seen at the airport, or was he last seen a day earlier?

Has airport CCTV been released to confirm June 20? Seems hard to lose someone at the airport.

The footage where he is barefoot in underpants being transferred between vehicles, is that before or after June 20?

<modsnip: quoted post was removed> The footage was posted on June 29, has anyone looked at the metadata to see when it was recorded?

A daughter desperate to find her father who was last seen at a gala, then the airport, then in his underpants during a vehicle transfer. I'm curious when the video was made. I'm curious to see airport CCTV. I'm curious about the gala he attended on June 17 and where he was staying the night prior to his June 18 flight. When was his June 20 flight booked and how did he get to the airport? Who was he with - traveling alone? Why was he invited to the gala?

So many questions.

I don't believe an ambulance will take you to the embassy. The embassy can assist a citizen in need of contact info for emergency medical care, but they wouldn't do so by having the patient dropped off, medical status unknown, at their door. In Cancun, Galena Hospital is considered one of the best choices for tourists (when I was flying commercially as a pilot that's where we were told to go if we had a serious illness on a layover). The center is widely regarded as the best hospital in Quintana Roo and is a major hub for medical tourism( meaning many of the staff can speak English or can pass you quickly to someone who can.) I recently saw a FB post of a horror story that happened to a couple in Cancun at Oleo Cancun Playa All Inclusive Resort. If you look up the resort on FB I think you can find the story.

Hope Robert is okay. Mexico is a scary place to visit right now.

Mexico is fine to visit right now. We go every few months. Of course, there are areas to avoid, just like the US.

What a heartbreaking story. It reminds me of Michelle Reynolds from Texas who had a mental breakdown and was found wandering and confused many weeks later on the streets in New Orleans. I hope Robert is found quickly and his family can get him the care he needs.

Robert's daughter, Lauren, was just interviewed on local Jax tv station. I think i saw more details of the video that was previously posted. The ambulence was supposedly taking him to a hospital and then to the embassy. The newscast said "he never arrived at the embassy". But actually said nothing about whether he arrived at the hospital. I assume the video of the news cast will be on their website page soon.... and I will post it.
imo..until I can post the newscast video.

There is an article in Spanish from a Mexican news publication that has more information. I'm using Google Translate, so forgive any mistakes. Perhaps someone here speaks Spanish and can verify the translation? A few things I found interesting:

"Robert was found lying on "Los Tules" avenue, in superblock 247, wounded, it was said that he was beaten by an operator of the Andrés Quintana Roo taxi drivers union, who stole his belongings, money and other things that the foreigner had."

"He has been seen in the Cielo Nuevo subdivision, very close to Arco Norte, better known as the Periférico de Cancún, but before that, he was at the Jesús Kumate Rodríguez hospital, where he was helped by the staff since he was beaten, after being assaulted."

"We believe that he has had a mental breakdown and is wandering the streets."

Another publication in Spanish has a similar story. (Again, Google Translate)

"According to the information available so far, it is a 62-year-old American who was assaulted and beaten by a taxi driver from Cancun belonging to the "Andrés Quintana Roo" union. Robert Wayne would have been treated on Los Tules Avenue in the 247 superblock; from there he was transferred to the General Hospital of Cancun, but once he left the hospital, his family lost contact with him. For this reason, they launched an alert through social networks; they believe that he might have had a mental breakdown and that he is not feeling well."

Interesting, I came across this article from January 2023 this morning, mentioning Union taxi driver attacks on tourists in Cancun. I was wondering whether that is what could have happened to him. Did he try to use Uber potentially?

This article says that no one contacted the embassy or consulate that he had been assaulted and then disappeared until various days after the family contacted the local police department. I can’t see anything in Mexican newspapers that say he was taken to the embassy. That may be a translation issue.
