Mexican authorities have issued an “urgent” Amber Alert for a missing American teenager after she was last spotted on Sinaloa drug cartel turf nearly three weeks ago, according to reports.

Shelbie Lynn Dwyer, 17, was last seen in a stationery store and internet cafe on March 31 in Salvador Alvarado in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, one of the regions plagued by drug cartel violence, the Mexican news outlet El Milenio reported.

Authorities said Dwyer is 5 feet tall and has several distinctive tattoos, including doves and praying hands on her upper left arm, a rose on her right thumb, and the word “Bendita” — Spanish for “blessed” — on her lower right arm.

She also has a heart on her middle finger and the word “Muerdeme” — or “Bite me” — on her buttocks, the newspaper reported.

It is unclear if Dwyer was living in Mexico or was visiting.

That area is not someplace I could see an American teen heading to on their own so I'm assuming she had family down there. I hope there's more information or a positive outcome here soon.

Two were found alive, two dead. According to this NBC article she has family in Des Moines Washington where she left from and was in contact with them for several days after she left. She traveled by car to Tijuana and from there apparently took a plane to Culiacán, Sinaloa. Missing Washington teen believed to be in Mexico, FBI offers reward In my opinion this is likely drug related. The Sinaloa cartel, among the most-powerful drug-trafficking syndicates in the world is based in Culiacán, Sinaloa state It is NOT a place you'd travel willingly for a holiday. My gut feeling is her family is aware of that, hence their not being more public about her disappearance

It’s very likely that the FBI gave the family some harsh truths about how the Sinaloa cartel operate. Hence their lack of advocacy. There might not be a person to save, and with all due respect she took a car to Tijuana then boarded a plane into their territory. She was last seen at an Internet cafe, I’m sure her family had some sort of contact which ceased abruptly.

I wish stories like these were publicized only to show the youth the dangers and consequences of their actions, and to ensure kids these days think critically. Something which I fear is lacking these days….

On Wednesday, Shelbie’s mother describes what's been 14 miserable months without her daughter.

"I miss her so bad," said Stacy Hurt, Shelbie's mother. "My heart hurts so bad for her."

Shelbie was 17 years old when she told her family she was going to take a trip to Mexico.

"She went out there with a friend she thought she trusted, and she never came back,” said Hurt.

Shelbie left on March 25, 2023. While she was traveling, she would sporadically talk with her mom over the phone. Then one day, she stopped calling, Hurt said.

Hurt called the local police department who contacted the FBI. Investigators said it appears Dwyer traveled by car to Tijuana.

"We believe that when she got to Tijuana she got on a plane, and flew to Sinaloa, taking a layover in Guadalajara and landing in Culiacan,” said Steve Vienneau, a supervisor special agent in the FBI Seattle office. "The last known information we have shows her being there on the March 29, 2023."

"We are concerned that the last place she was known to be was a place that is dangerous for Americans to be,” said Vienneau.

"I love her, and I miss her, and I think about her every day, and I just want her to come home,” said Hurt. "Just not knowing where she is at breaks my heart. I am having hope and faith that she comes home. I am not giving up hope. I am not doing that."
