“They went over and noticed that her truck lights were on,” Byrd said. “So the door was unlocked and the keys were in the ignition. So they turned the lights off and tried to call her, but she didn’t respond, so they thought she could possibly be sleeping. So they waited until 10 a.m.”
Byrd said that was when the neighbours went to the back of the house and saw that the sliding door had been forced open. She said they went inside and found Vardabasso’s body, which was inside the shower with her hands and feet bound.

''A woman originally from B.C. has been found dead in her home in Mexico.

Fifty-nine-year-old Valery Vardabasso, from Prince George, had been living in Puerto Peñasco when her body was found in her home on Dec. 14.

Mexican journalist Hector Aldrete originally published the story about Varadabasso’s death, citing an incident report sent out by local police.

The El Periodico De Frente reporter tells CityNews the woman was found after a neighbour saw an empty vehicle running in her driveway for a long period of time, and suspected something was wrong.

“He kind of suspected that something happened to her, so he went and looked into her home and then he saw in the bathroom window, he saw a body laying down in the bathroom floor,” Adrete said.''

FILE – Valery Vardabasso, originally from B.C., was found dead in her Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, home on Dec. 14, 2023.
''Aldrete describes some of the horrific details that were found inside the police report, noting investigators had said Varadabasso was allegedly found tied up inside her bathroom.

The town of Puerto Peñasco – also known as Rocky Point — is a popular tourist destination. Puerto Peñasco is just south of the Arizona border and is a hub for many Canadian and American snowbirds who go to vacation or buy properties. It’s been a quiet town as of late, according to Aldrete, as the border with Lukeville, Arizona is closed.''

''Her death has shaken many who live in the community who say the news has come as a shock to everyone, especially in an area with little to no crime.

As for any suspects or a motive, police in Mexico are remaining tight lipped. Aldrete tells CityNews his story in El Periodico De Frente, the online news outlet in Puerto Peñasco, has since been taken down.

He says authorities asked him to remove the story of Vardabasso’s death, claiming it would impede the investigation.''

“She was living her absolute best life in Mexico. She talked so highly of her life in Mexico. She had such a great little community,” Anderson told the newspaper.
But hovering in the background was an ex-boyfriend who had allegedly been stalking her. She took out a restraining order on him.''

“She ended things with him, and it didn’t end well, and he had been stalking her,” Anderson said. “From what I know it was not a quick death. It was pretty horrific. It looks like she put up a really big fight.”
He added: “The circumstances and the details surrounding her death are just enough to make you sick.”

I'm stuck on this (from link) :

“They went over and noticed that her truck lights were on,” Byrd said. “So the door was unlocked and the keys were in the ignition. So they turned the lights off and tried to call her, but she didn’t respond, so they thought she could possibly be sleeping. So they waited until 10 a.m. ... a neighbour saw an empty vehicle running in her driveway for a long period of time, and suspected something was wrong.”

Whatever happened sounds like it happened suddenly when she was in her truck and hadn't turned off the engine, but her door was opened. Whoever was there was not concerned about the lights in her truck running in her driveway for a long period of time.

What sort of person is that? Was it the ex-boyfriend? She lived in Mexico for 10 years, so presumably the ex-boyfriend is someone local. If it was not her ex-boyfriend, did the murder seem personal, or random. Was anything stolen?

I'm guessing this isn't an ex-boyfriend from Prince George or Victoria.

What was she doing on the night she was murdered? Had she been on a date, out for dinner, an evening with friends, grocery shopping, the movies?

It sounds like she had barely pulled into the driveway when she left the vehicle with her keys in the ignition and the engine running. Then she was murdered after a prolonged struggle.

Who is that person that she met at her home who caused her to leave lights on and vehicle running? Whoever it was either didn't care about the running vehicle, or didn't have a chance to turn it off and take the keys.

But then how did she get into the house if she was arriving home and her keys were found in the ignition? Unless we think her house keys and car keys were on two different key rings.

My thought was that someone was in the house and she tried to escape, grabbing her keys and jumping in her car and then whoever it was jumped in the car with her and maybe she jumped out of the car and he pulled her back into the house.

She looks familiar to me . But I live on Vancouver Island, have only driven through PG once. Maybe she tried to escape but unfortunately no one heard her and she was torn out of the truck before she was able to leave. Fight for her life. So sad. Jmo

She was living in Victoria 10 years ago when she was first invited to house-sit in Mexico. One job led to another, and she took other odd jobs in the meantime.

"Byrd said Vardabasso was living in Victoria when she was offered an opportunity to housesit in Mexico and she loved it.

“She actually was offered a second residence and that’s what she did. And she was a real part of the community there for over a decade.”

RIP to this poor lady :(
Condolences to her family.

Is living in Mexico safe?
For a woman living alone?
AFAIK there is a very high risk of common crime throughout the country, including: thefts and armed robberies.
Not to mention drug wars

I've been looking for updates on Val's case but found nothing, no arrests or person(s) of interest named .. so disappointing.

Val, by all accounts, was such a lovely human being .. who on earth stands to gain from her not being around? So sad.

Please let there be justice
