"It's horrible," Kent County sheriff's Capt. Kevin Kelley said. "I think mom was on the ground and the kids were on top of her. The children — both believed to be younger than six — were found about 10:30 a.m.
"We're trying to figure out why she came out here. We're still really trying to piece it all together." The woman suffered a gunshot wound. A weapon was found at the scene. An autopsy was planned.

Investigators believe the woman and children were inside a parked car on Christmas Day, according to WOOD-TV.

She apparently left the children inside the running car before she walked into a nearby field. The children are believed to have left the car at some point to join their mother.

Wow. Those poor babies. Glad they made it through the night. But the terror of being next to their dead momma😢 so very tragic and sad

Heartbreaking. To feel that helpless and hopeless. And not to know the children were safe... Anyone could have come by and taken or harmed them or they may have died from carbon monoxide. I'm glad it's being investigated in the event of foul play. Praying for the children.

Mom found dead may have been depressed. The woman may have been suffering from postpartum depression. The woman and her two children were reported missing Friday night. The woman’s 5-month-old son was in an car seat parked nearby. The 3 year old girl was conscious but had a bullet fragment lodged in her head. Police say the wound appears to have been accidental. Both children are recovering in the hospital.
