That CNN and MSNBC are going to near-continuous coverage, with very little information, is a very bad sign to me.

Unfortunately, I understand. I was at the University of Iowa when this happened, and had taken physics the previous semester (fortunately, neither my professor nor our teaching assistant, whom we really liked, were involved) and I had dated a TA briefly during that time and feared for his safety before all the news was in. A friend's daughter went there a few years ago, and didn't know about it.
