A Michigan State Police trooper’s alertness in noticing James VanCallis’ motorcycle parked in a driveway led to the St. Clair County man being accused of murdering April Millsap, trial testimony revealed Thursday.

Detective Sgt. Raymond Pechman testified in VanCallis’ trial that he saw a motorcycle parked in the graveled driveway of a home on Armada Ridge Road outside Armada about 23 hours after Millsap was killed July 24, 2014.

The black, blue and white Enduro matched the description of a motorcycle that eyewitness Eric Rechke reported to police only hours before. Rechke, whose daughter was a friend of Millsap, tipped off police that he saw Millsap with an unidentified man standing next to the motorcycle on the Macomb Orchard Trail minutes before her slaying, according to testimony.

“I was driving down Armada Ridge Road westbound headed back to the command center and spotted the dirt bike in the driveway,” Pechman said on the stand.
