Authorities have found two hikers dead on a remote island in Lake Superior and admit a mystery around their deaths. The investigation began on Sunday, when National Park Service rangers received multiple reports of dead bodies at a remote campground within Isle Royale National Park near Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Two rangers hiked 11 miles overnight to reach the area and discovered two people dead. Park authorities are now conducting an investigation.

Looking at the island on Google maps, it is a very large and almost undeveloped island, maybe 20-30 miles long. There is a ranger station and a few campgrounds, but most of the island is undeveloped and likely only accessible by foot.

[A]uthorities said they have now identified the two people and contacted their next of kin. But they did not release the names of the two people, and have not yet said how they died....
Park officials on Thursday also reported that the two people were found at the South Lake Desor Campground, along the park’s main Greenstone Ridge Trail. It’s an 11-mile hike from the nearest ranger station.

There is definitely a lot of chatter out there about this. Sounds really upsetting. Also maybe really sad that no one would or could intervene, but I can understand why in a remote area like that. MOO

Another minor update to this story. Deaths were not animal related. Wolves and moose are present on the island so I guess that was a concern. Reading between the lines, the news station seems a little frustrated about how slow reports are coming out.

The National Park Service said the deaths of two people found on Isle Royale Monday morning were not animal-related.

Isle Royale Supervisory Park Ranger Liz Valencia ruled out animals as a cause during a Friday morning Zoom interview with TV6 Houghton-Hancock Bureau Reporter Colin Jackson. TV6 first asked if animals were involved following a Thursday afternoon press release from the National Park Service that announced the two campers had been identified....

TV6 has been calling the NPS for updates since Tuesday, when it first announced that two unidentified campers were found at a remote campground in the park.
