I got the vibe that at least some of them might have been a little on the younger side and not really familiar with situations going bad, so they did the first thing they could think of to do. Even if I'm wrong in my assumption- approaching people who are obviously agitated and not in a great state of mind, in the dark, when you don't know if they're armed or what they might be armed with, and you possibly don't have a lot of experience with self-defense is....not a great idea, to say the least. MOOIs anyone else wondering why everyone who heard the screaming quickly left the area, listening to screams as they hiked farther away?
