her memorial at Find a Grave
murderers appeal denied
Bernice Gray was last seen in the early morning hours of December 26, 1991. She dropped her toddler daughter at day care and headed for work. Gray never arrived at work. Her employer called the home Gray shared with her boyfriend, the father of her baby, Robert Pann. No answer.
Robert Pann called back 10 minutes to tell the employer that Bernice didn't stay with him, they should call her mom's house.
Then they called her mother's house, where she'd been staying since she and Pann split up in the early part of December, her mother's fiance took the call and was very concerned.
Four days later, Bernice's car, a blue Pontiac, was found abandoned in Detroit, there were bloodstains in the vehicle, and a shell casing. Dr Werner Spitz will examine her vehicle and determine that 1) the blood belonged to Bernice Gray and 2) that she was shot while sitting behind the wheel, then pushed into the passenger seat. This was based on where the blood spatter and stains were in the vehicle.
St Clair Shores police will perform several searches, several digs, but no trace of her body was ever located.
In 1996, Robert Pann attacked his wife, Maureen Pann, while she was driving. He was arrested, charged and sent to prison for this assault. While incarcerated, police built a case around him and he was tried, and found guilty of Gray's murder.
No sign of Bernice Gray has ever surfaced. She was pronounced dead in the mid-1990s so that her mother, who raised her young child, could get benefits for the girl.
Robert Pann owned several properties, including businesses in Warren and rental properties in Detroit. He also lived in a canal front home on Lake St Clair. Again, several searches were performed, using divers, dogs and even a bulldozer, but no sign of Gray was ever found.
