MI MI - Brittany Shank, 23, Sturgis, St. Joseph County, 30 Nov 2018

  • #101
According to the flier, Shank is believed to have run off the road in a thick fog. Eyewitnesses reported that Shank may have been bloodied in the car accident, and she began wandering house to house without shoes or a coat. Additional testimony said she may have attempted to contact the police, but disappeared before any response. According to eyewitness reports, she was last seen with a green Army-style coat that she had been given.

Shank stands 5 feet, 1 inch and was estimated to weigh 110 pounds at the time of her disappearance. She is Caucasian and fair-complected, with blue eyes and brown hair. Additionally, Shank has multiple tattoos that could possibly be used to identify her including “Kayden” on her right chest, “Zac” inside her left wrist, “Owen Conner” in large print on her right leg, a large butterfly/tribal tattoo on the small of her back, orange initials inside her right wrist and a candy skull on her right thigh. Both of her ears are gauged.
Shank has left four children hoping for her safe return.

''Bradley Balk was the sheriff at the time of Shank's disappearance. He said she was seen earlier that day with a white man in his early to mid 20s, around 5'6" to 5'8" tall with short blonde hair and mutton chop style sideburns.''

'In the call you can hear a woman, presumably Shank, speaking with the 911 operator. She tries to explain where she is at before she hands the phone to a man nearby. The man explains to the 911 operator that the woman just showed up at his door with no shoes or coat, and said that her boyfriend had "wrecked the car" and ran off.'

Details of Disappearance

Shank was last seen in the 33000 block of Fawn River Road in Sturgis, Michigan on November 30, 2018. She ran her boyfriend's car off the road in a thick fog, and was walking from house to house in the area, apparently very confused, asking for help. She tried to call the police, but cell phone was reception was bad and her calls couldn't go through.

A man called 911 for her, saying Shank had come to his door and told him her boyfriend had crashed their car and taken off running, and that she needed help. Her feet and arms were bleeding, and she had no coat or shoes; he gave her an Army-green coat to wear.

The 911 dispatchers tried to get more information, but the man said Shank didn't want to talk and had gone back outside. When police responded to the scene, Shank was gone. They found her vehicle and it had minor damage.

Earlier on the day of her disappearance, Shank was accompanied by a man in his early to mid-twenties. He is described as 5'6 to 5'8 tall, with short blond hair and mutton-chop sideburns. It's unclear whether this man had any involvement in his case, but a sketch of him is posted with this case summary.

Shank has never been heard from again. She left behind four children. Her case remains unsolved.

CENTREVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) — The family of a woman who vanished near Sturgis six years ago is calling on the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office to hand the case over to Michigan State Police, hoping that the larger agency could make strides in finding Brittany Shank.

“I’m feeling a lot of pain and sorrow,” Shank’s father Greg Wallace told News 8 in his first interview on an unassuming fall afternoon outside the Centreville courthouse. “Just not knowing where she’s at or what happened.”

Surely someone in Brittany's circle knows who the guy she was with is.
Was she known to pick up strangers?
No DNA or fingerprints in the car?
Are the documents sealed?

I agree that someone close to Brittany should have some idea who this man is, or at the very least, has additional information to share regarding her disappearance. The link below refers to "individuals withholding or providing incorrect and/or incomplete statements".

Regarding forensic evidence, I have the same question. What, if anything, was found in her car? Was testing done? If so, what did LE find?

[...]
Witnesses reported her feet and arms were scratched, cut and bleeding. The resident helped her call St. Joseph County Central Dispatch, but before the call concluded, she left the home and was last seen near the 33000 block of Fawn River Road, east of Sturgis.

Shank had told the neighbor that she was with her boyfriend at the time of the crash, but that he had taken the car and left the scene, according to the 911 call. As the neighbor was speaking with the dispatcher, he could be heard telling Shank to "come back here" before he appeared to lose contact with her.
[...]

Based on this report, the man Brittany was with was known to be driving the car at least part of the time. Do we know what happened to this vehicle? Was it located and tested for DNA and/or fingerprints?

This link indicates the area where the vehicle was found was examined by Brittany's mother:

[...]
She learned from Michigan State Police that an accident had happened on Fawn River Road, where authorities found Brittany’s boyfriend’s car on the side of the road. Jessica checked the site out herself. “It looks like the car could’ve been moved or backed up,” Jessica said. “But it looks like maybe there was some kind of struggle or she [was] running from something or somebody.”

This description is not accurate. This description was tossed out years ago...

Thanks for joining our discussion. Can you tell us what part is inaccurate? The sketch that was just released shows a white male with short hair and mutton chops. His eyebrows and chops appear to be darker in the sketch; maybe his hair was bleached.

I guess we have very different definitions of "mutton chops", because that sketch shows a man with long sideburns. Sideburns and mutton chops are not the same thing.

Vickie was very specific in her description of the man she saw with Brittany that night when she said he was tall, skinny, and had "Elvis-style sideburns."

This is important, even if people think it isn't, because in November of 2018 there was actually a man who was short and stocky, and was sporting mutton chops. There was ALSO a man who was tall, thin, and was sporting "Elvis-style sideburns,"... BOTH knew Brittany. As a matter of fact, BOTH were also in contact with her at one or more point during the day on November 30th as well.

There was no forensic testing done on SA's car, because when the car was towed from the scene no crime had been committed. At that point in time, Brittany wasn't missing. I think a lot of people either forget this, or neglect to take this into consideration.

It wouldn't be until an entire week late that any of us knew Brittany was *missing*. A whole week went by before law enforcement was made aware. The chain of custody of that car made it impossible to run any forensic testing on due to the fact of how many people had been in and out of it by the time any of us knew she was missing.

Aside from finding out she was missing, those of us who feel a though foul play was a possibility didn't think this until some time went by without finding her. By the time *that* had occurred to anyone as a possibility, the car was already gone because he had totaled it when he hit some deer after Britt went missing.

Thank you for the information. It's not that we don't think it's important but due to TOS here, we are restricted to using MSM and verified sources for our information. I personally have no knowledge about men's facial hair styles so I assumed the news source knew what they were writing about. As a verified friend, your input is valuable.

So, is the sketch of the guy a one size fits all kind of thing or do they have their eyes on short and stocky OR tall and thin?
