MI MI - Chelsea Small, 30, Taylor, shot at work (gun silencer used), 12 Nov 2013

  • #21
Nice work Nin. The label on the side of the hat looks like a distinct shape there, that's interesting.

Good photo. Looks like he's wearing a lightweight, navy blue bomber jacket. A jacket like that is usually worn by an older man, in his 40's. Not a young man's attire. Something an older man would wear on a golf course or as an alternative to a heaver jacket, if it wasn't too cold. It would also have slash pockets for keeping your hands out of sight when you're idle, or warm if it rains. Its NOT a heavy duty winter jacket, more for Spring or Fall. Maybe, his job required him to be partly inside, partly outside. A mid-level municipal worker?

Also, notice his neck in the video and photo. He doesn't have a well defined jaw line from his ear to his chin. The line of his neck is thick and somewhat fat. A little too much junk food. I would say that lowering his head slightly would give him a medium-sized double chin...like a turtle. He's not athletic. His usual employment might require standing in one place or walking. He definitely isn't into heavy labor. If you follow the line of his back, he's somewhat stoop shouldered. He's a middle-aged schlub.

The hat is interesting ... not many caps have a logo/emblem on one side of cap, and emblem on the front. It's quite unique I think. Has anyone seen a cap like this, back in the day, 2013 or earlier? Will start looking around.

It looks kinda reminiscent of the Dickies logo?

Hello.

Maintenance man.
Whoever he worked for may have had their logo added to the cap for distribution among their maintenance staff. If I were working the case, I'd contact Dickies and find out if they supplied a large number of caps to either businesses or municipalities in or near Taylor and which of them had logos applied to those caps.
Dickies cap, dickies jacket, work pants and white t-shirt (undershirt). Look for a guy who was fired from his maintenance/janitorial/ floor care...you get the picture job.
Great work cujenn81!

Can anyone zoom into the hat to see if there's a logo on the front of it? Just the relative shape would be fine.

1- @1:00 Chelsea's mother says "he didn't need the second shot, but he did it anyways, that was very malicious"

2- Also, @1:45 they reference the same man (stealing gun silencers) discussed up thread.

3- Important note , imo. @2:10, CS's mother says that there was someone giving her daughter a hard time, he wanted to date her- he was a customer.

ETA At the end the mother talks about Chelsea's grave site being vandalized and items stolen.

If I'm not mistaken, customers had to be buzzed in. If so, she might hesitate to let the Annoying Guy in. On the other hand, if she buzzed the perp in, she might have recognized him as a regular (or at least recognizable) customer. Still, if Annoying Guy was a regular customer, she might feel obligated to let him in anyway to avoid any hassle with her boss if AG (Annoying Guy)complained.

Refresh me about the procedure for doing transactions in the store.
How much money stolen? Anything else taken?

He could have tested the waters by making a series of transactions, just to get a closer look at what was going on behind the counter and familiarize himself to the customer service person.

Did Chelsea usually work a set shift? I know she swapped out her own shift that day. Are the procedures for buzzing people in different at night?

Who came up with the hare brained idea of buzzing customers in as security measure?

Jeez...this perp is more of a schlub than the killer. Did the silencer theft happen before or after Chelsea's murder?

This is VERY interesting. It could be the perp memorializing his crime and grabbing a souvenir as a means of reliving his moment of glory. Every time he looks at whatever he stole and the longer it takes to catch him, he's reminded that he got over on everyone and outfoxed LE. Very empowering. Interesting.

For those of you who might be thinking this perp is the same one who killed Missy Bevers, consider this:
1. Bevers was a B&E. Chelsea let her killer in.
2. Bevers perp wore a carefully chosen disguise that assured anonymity. Chelsea's killer looks like Joe the Maintenance man and didn't cover the majority of his face.
3. Bevers perp wandered around the building like he was waiting for his grandma to pick him up from a school Halloween party. Chelsea's killer took little more than a minute to rob and kill. In. Rob and kill. Out.
4. Bever's perp chose to do the crime at night. Chelsea's killer chose broad daylight.
5. Bever's perp spent time busting windows and jemmying the occasional door looking for something to steal. Chelsea's killer knew where the money was.
6. Bever's perp is more slender than the guy who killed Chelsea.
7. Bever's perp wears boots (and/or gaiters?) very authoritative (symbolically). Chelsea's killer has on a comfort shoe.
8. Bever's perp was sneaky and disrespectful. Chelsea's killer was brazen and cold.

Most unlikely, just commenting that in the pic. one perp reminded me of the other perp.

The silencers were stolen from Schupbach's Sporting Goods on May 8 2013. Chelsea's murder occurred on 12 November 2013. Schupbach's is about an hour's drive away.

At this point I'm thinking he was disguised as a courier and got buzzed in because he had an envelope poking out from what looks like a delivery/mail bag, probably had deliveries all the time there. Just my current thinking.

It's probably not him but there's always a possibility, you just don't know, three years between crimes is a long time and a lot of changes can occur in a person's life, appearance/accidents, anything can happen, so I'm keeping an open mind because you just don't know. My opinion only of course.

Hmmmm. Maybe the silencer thief is the murderer's buddy. His chubby minion. They're both thieves, so they have a hobby in common.

If there's no logo on the hat besides the Dickies emblem, he could have purchased it in any K-Mart or Walmart in an effort to put together his "uniform". A logo would be very helpful, something that sets the hat apart from a simple Walmart purchase.
The shoes look like chukkas or bucks. Again, a non-specific shoe that's more a comfort shoe, a shoe you wear to avoid foot pain when you stand for a long time. Not an athletic shoe, not a running shoe, not a dress shoe, a mid-priced shoe. It looks like its made of canvas or suede. A schlub shoe.

As far as the jacket goes. Its a lightweight "bomber" style jacket. Bomber jackets have a ribbed knit waistband along the bottom of the jacket. Because the ribbing is tighter than the cut of the jacket, it tends to "ride up" and cause a "ballooning" effect above the hipline. That ballooning effect can make the wearer look like they have a belly when they don't, or make it worse if they do. A guy with any kind of fashion sense wouldn't want a jacket that, because it's construction, would make him look fatter than he actually is. Strictly a utilitarian garment.

It looks like the brand label is sewn to that ribbing on the left-hand side. The fabric isn't shiny, so its not nylon. Its probably poplin, a matte, medium weight cotton/polyester fabric.
*I never realized working as a salesperson in men's retail would pay off, ever. LOL!

More about the jacket: The MA-1 bomber jacket (also known as the MA-1 flight jacket) is an American military jacket which was developed in the 1950s. The MA-1 and its predecessor, the B-15 flight jacket, were originally developed and needed at that time because the emergence of the jet age created new requirements for pilot performance, safety, and comfort.

Because the MA-1 Jacket not only keeps the wearer warm, but is highly comfortable, the jacket is very popular in Europe and Australia during winter. The jacket is also worn in North America, where it is commonly known as a bomber jacket, especially in areas with cold weather. These jackets became popular in the late 1970s with , mods punks and skinheads. During the 1980s the jackets had extensive exposure in style magazines such as The Face and i-D, often re-imagined by clothes designers of the time.

The MA-1 is also in use in several police forces where cold weather is a part of everyday life. They were chosen over several other designs primarily for the sturdy construction, and the heavy insulation needed in cold temperatures.

The perp in this case may be wearing an insulated bomber. Ex-military? Police? Security guard?
