DETROIT - A woman and her brother have been charged with murder in the death of the woman's 11-year-old stepson, whose body was found floating in a river 22 years ago, the state attorney general's office said Thursday.
Rosalind Brown, 50, and Montel Pettiford, 43, are accused of poisoning, then drowning Christopher Brown in 1985 in the Flint River about 60 miles north of Detroit.
The attorney general's office did not give a motive, but spokesman Matt Frendewey said "a lot of interesting family dynamics were in play."
The sixth-grader's body was found in the river nearly three weeks after he was reported missing from his father and stepmother's home, where he was spending Easter break. (more at link)

FLINT, Michigan -- Tears of anger, sadness and relief streamed from Brenda Simpson's eyes Monday afternoon.

Anger at her son's defiant killers who refused to meet her eyes.

Sadness because nothing will ever bring back 11-year-old Christopher Alan Brown.

Minutes later, Rosalind L. Brown and her brother Montel Pettiford were sentenced to spend the rest of the lives in prison for the 1985 slaying of Christopher, who was Brown's stepson.

When police took a fresh look at the case in 2004 and exhumed the body, investigators found evidence that the boy had been poisoned.

After the Genesee County Prosecutor's office declined to pursue criminal charges in 2005, the state attorney general's office agreed two years later to charge Brown and Pettiford with murder.

Rosalind Brown vowed to fight the case on appeal.

FLINT, MI – Caring is a word both friends and family use when remembering former Flint Journal reporter Jeff Smith.

But for Brenda Simpson, Smith meant much more.

"He wrote the first front page byline in the newspaper about my son's murder," Simpson said. "Jeff didn't seem like he was there to just get a story. He was concerned. He was genuine. He was there when they pulled my son's body out of the river."

Simpson's son, Christopher Alan Brown was murdered in 1985 but no one believed her. At the time the evidence only showed his death as an accident. Smith followed Simpson's story year after year until in 2008 when two people were sent to trial for his death.
