Man charged with attack on 2 Detroit EMTs

30-year-old Michael Montgomery accused of slashing EMTs' faces

DETROIT -
A 30-year-old Detroit man has been charged with attacking two EMTs.

Michael Montgomery is accused of slashing the faces and hands of EMTs Alfredo Rojas and Kelly Adams on Tuesday with a retractable box cutter while they were helping a woman with an injured ankle in the 3400 block of Third Street.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Montgomery with two counts assault with intent to murder, two counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, one count of assault with intent to maim and one count of resisting and obstructing causing serious injury...

Kelly Adams testified Monday during the preliminary examination for Michael Awan Montgomery, 30, of Detroit that he attacked her and Al Rojas with a box cutter, cutting their faces and hands, leaving long-lasting physical wounds...

Adams added her recovery will be lengthy saying she had to have her facial nerves put back together, the muscles in her face reconstructed and the saliva gland, which is detached, in her face drained twice a month. She has had surgery in her eye because she’s had “complete paralysis” on the left side of her face causing her eye to remain open...

Montgomery will stand trial on the charges of attacking Adams and Rojas. He is charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder and one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm.

Montgomery has also been charged in two cold cases. He was ordered to trial today in the sexual assault and murder of 16-year-old Dantoya White, who was stabbed in the neck and found in an alley naked from the waist down on Jan. 1, 2006.

Authorities said they connected him to White's case and another that happened less than two weeks earlier through DNA matching.

In that earlier case, Montgomery is accused of kidnapping, torturing and sexually assaulting a 33-year-old woman in an alley in the 8600 block of Auburn in Detroit on Dec. 23, 2005.

Michael Awan Montgomery pleaded guilty last month in four cases: the slashing of the two EMTs, Dantoya’s rape and killing and attacks on two Detroit women in 2005 and 2006.

The victims of Michael Awan Montgomery’s box cutter and the family of a teenager he raped and killed agreed at his sentencing Thursday he deserved much more time in prison than his minimum four decade sentence.

“He took my daughter away and this is all he gets,” said Morennica Jefferson about her murdered daughter, Dantoya White, for whom she is struggling to get a headstone. “It was really hard to look at him.”

Kelly Adams, one of the two EMTs Montgomery slashed when they came to the aid of a woman he was with outside the Neighborhood Services Organization homeless shelter, said instead of his 40-80 year sentences, he should have gotten life in prison on all the counts against him.

She called Montgomery a rapist, a child murderer and a “psychopath who tried to kill two medics that were just doing their job because he couldn’t get a free ride in an ambulance. But he’s going to get his free ride today ... 40 years of a free ride.”
