Yellow Dog Falls

From county road 510, there is a trail from a parking area. The main falls are about a mile east of that.

9 miles distance is calculated from;
“Estupigan's vehicle was discovered in the northern mountains of Marquette County.”

That has to be an error in reporting unless it was just being unspecific. His car was found on County Road 510 by the Yellow Dog River. This parking area is only a mile from the Falls.

Found deceased :(

Estupigan, a fish and wildlife major, had gone to the area of the river near County Road 510 on Thursday after telling his roommate he planned to go hiking and take pictures of some of the area’s waterfalls.

Authorities believe the young man became lost and disoriented when a snow storm hit that area later Thursday, according to the TV station. His body was found about 300 feet from a road.

An autopsy is planned.

Missing NMU student found dead 300 feet from road

Ah, man...300 feet from a road! That’s so sad! I was hopeful he’d found a way to burrow down and miraculously survive. So young. So very sad. :(

This is very sad and unfortunate - he was so bright and talented. When we become so wed to nature as to be ultimately comfortable in it, we often forget its savageness. I so wish he had brought a friend. Hopefully they review the trail he took just to ensure it is well marked at eye-level so it can still be followed out if covered in snow.

That's such sad news. I looked back at the historical weather for Marquette which is just south of where he went and they had snow showers in the forecast for the day he left. Maybe it was sunny when he left home, and then the storm rolled in.

NMU remembers Guiancarlo Estupigan
On a cold and windy day, the NMU flag waves tall in the middle of campus.

But on Tuesday, the flag is at half staffed in honor of 25-year-old Guiancarlo Estupigan.

"That’s to basically let our community know that we have lost someone," said Derek Hall, NMU spokesperson.

"We are really shocked by what happened, he was really very well connected with some of our biology folks," said Hall.

Hall told TV6 that Carlo pursued his major through photography to really capture the wildlife of U.P.

Now since his passing, the public is turning to those photos to reflect how his camera skills in turn, captured their hearts.

"I went through his Facebook page and looked at the amazing photos that he had, and I was just blown away," said Hall. "He found his place, he found NMU, a place for him to learn and grow and it makes his passing tough because he found his calling and it was cut short."
