This is terribly sad. Sounds like he was off trail and attempting to do cross country orienteering (which many of us do attempt).
A preliminary investigation appears to indicate that Komins may have fallen in the steep and rocky terrain.

According to NP ranger research, being alone is a key ingredient to this kind of mishap. It's always good to play devil's advocate when your hiking partner decides to do something that wasn't planned.
OTOH, rocks do just suddenly give way, regardless of the person's planning.
Mr Komins leaves a legacy of independence and loving the outdoors.
