A “mummified” body that was found Thursday afternoon in a garage in Detroit will be examined next week by an anthropologist to try and determine a host of factors including gender and cause of death, Wayne County officials said Friday.

The discovery, police say, happened around 1 p.m. when a potential home buyer was inspecting the garage of a home in the 19900 block of Spencer. The body was in the backseat of a 1990 or 1991 Plymouth Acclaim, authorities said.
Lloyd Jackson, a spokesman for Wayne County Medical Examiner’s office, said officials estimate that the body had been there for “years” and was beyond the decomposition stage when “the body is brown.”

Medical examiners visually inspected the corpse, which was found dressed in a shirt, sweater and pants.

But the advanced state of decomposition, in which exposed tissue has turned brown, taking on the appearance of tanned leather, precludes a conventional autopsy, even obscuring whether the person was male or female, Jackson said.
Coroners hope to resolve much of the mystery once an anthropologist from the University of Michigan arrives next week to conduct a special examination, including measurements of the hip bones to determine its gender.

Jackson said investigators expect the anthropological autopsy will also reveal the approximate age of the individual, as well as something about the manner, cause and time of death.

Quite an interesting story. One would think this could be solved. Many questions. Here's a start:
Who was the last resident?
Did that person die?
Is that why the property was listed for sale?
Who the registered owner of the vehicle?

This sounds like it has some eerie similarities to another case, ironically also out of Michigan:

http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/07/us/michigan-mummified-body-found/

This woman had basically created a digital shadow that, upon her death, continued to automatically handle all of her finances until her money ran out years later. Her body was also in the back seat of her car in her garage. The bank finally foreclosed on the home and at some point someone spotted that the body was there.

Being in Detroit, where houses are frequently foreclosed and/or abandoned, I wonder if a similar story is taking shape here.

A nearby resident said she was shocked to hear of the discovery and has no idea whose body it could be. The resident, who only gave her name as Cookie, said that until last week she had never seen the garage open or noticed any sort of odd behaviors or smells emanating from inside.

The neighbor recalled how her dogs did inexplicably start barking for a period of time, but she isn't certain whether the barking was related to the body decomposing in the nearby garage. The neighbor described the house's previous occupants before the current tenants as a mother and son who moved out about four or five years ago.
Property records show the house and garage on Spencer last sold for $21,000 in 1986 and is in the name of Emanuel Martinez, who also is listed with an address in Warren. Attempts by the Free Press to reach Martinez were unsuccessful.
