Detroit police officer suspended after video shows him repeatedly punching naked woman in a hospital

A Detroit police officer has been suspended with pay after a bystander’s video showed him punching a possibly mentally ill woman at least 10 times at a hospital, the police chief said.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig has called the video “very disturbing” and said a criminal investigation has been launched into the officer’s use of force. But he also added the officer is entitled to due process. The department is not making any conclusions but observations, Craig said.

According to Detroit Police Chief James Craig, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has also started a criminal investigation into the officer's use of force.

The incident started with a call around 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday near Brainard and Trumbull in the third precinct. When officers arrived, they saw a naked woman and put her in a police car, taking her to Detroit Receiving Hospital.

According to Craig, the woman was not agitated during the entire ride to the hospital, and officers were able to cover her up. One problem, according to Craig, is they didn't handcuff her.​

They're trained to de-escalate. Punching someone repeatedly, especially when their back is turned to an officer, goes against that training, so a criminal investigation was opened.

She spit on him, it pissed him off, so he punched her. Seems pretty straight forward to me. Hopefully he won't carry a badge and a gun the next time someone pisses him off.

The training some cops are receiving may not be good enough. Cops need to be provided with better de-escalation tactics. I do wonder if she was mentally ill or under the influence of drugs. The cop needs to be fired.
