The trio was in court Thursday for a status conference. Kwame Kilpatrick had argued the court is moving too fast to sentence him and is violating his right to due process. He and the other two were set to be sentenced in September but now will be sentenced in October...

Experts: Don't expect apologetic Kilpatrick at sentencing

Robert Snell /The Detroit News

Detroit— Don’t expect a mea culpa or apology from Kwame Kilpatrick when the disgraced former Detroit mayor is sentenced today for a reign of corruption that weakened the city and damaged faith in public officials, legal experts and former associates said.

Kilpatrick, 43, who did not testify during his five-month corruption trial, will get an unchallenged opportunity at 10 a.m. in federal court to tout his accomplishments and lessen a potentially decades-long prison sentence by showing remorse. He could, however, provoke a stiffer sentence by denying responsibility or criticizing the court, experts said...

By Ross Levitt, CNN

(CNN) -- Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick on Thursday was sentenced to 28 years in prison after he was convicted in March of two dozen federal charges.

The charges include racketeering, extortion and the filing of false tax returns. He was accused of using the mayor's office to enrich himself and associates.

Before he was sentenced, Kilpatrick apologized in court Thursday morning.

"I say with every morsel of my being that I'm sorry to you," he said.

Judge Nancy G. Edmunds noted the apology and said that he was showing "more awareness than I have seen along the way."

But she said "a long prison sentence is necessary to insulate the public from his behavior." ...

Ferguson’s lengthy sentence was seven years shorter than the one given to Kilpatrick a day earlier but remains among the longest ever handed down in a public corruption case...

Bernard Kilpatrick sentenced to 15 months in prison for tax crime

By Robert Snell

Ex-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s father, Bernard, was sentenced Thursday afternoon to 15 months in prison for a single tax crime stemming from the City Hall corruption case.

U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds said Bernard Kilpatrick, 72, took money and did no work for contractors who were strong-armed by his son, requiring a prison term to send a strong message that public corruption won’t be tolerated.

As part of his sentence, Edmunds also ordered him to repay $62,000 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service. The judge said she would recommend that he serve his time in a Texas prison, starting after Jan. 1.

“Good luck, Mr. Kilpatrick,” the judge told him.

Bernard Kilpatrick showed no visible reaction as his sentence was announced...
