Michigan Supreme Court won't hear Kalamazoo bike crash suspect's appeal

In an order published Wednesday, Jan. 24, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled it won't hear Charles Pickett Jr.'s appeal of a Michigan Court of Appeal's July 2017 decision.

Kalamazoo County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Scott Brower said Thursday a status conference will be scheduled in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court where the prosecutor and Pickett's defense attorney will schedule a settlement conference and a trial date in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court.

Jurors heard closing arguments Tuesday in the trial of Charles Pickett Jr., who was charged with murder after driving his pickup truck into a group of bicyclists north of Kalamazoo.

After attorneys for both sides summarized their arguments, the case went to the jury for deliberation just before noon. They reached a verdict in the afternoon, convicting Pickett on all charges.

Pickett sentenced to at least 40 years in fatal Kalamazoo cycling crash
Charles Pickett, Jr., 52, was sentenced to 40 to 75 years in prison and will serve the minimum until he is eligible to face a parole board.

Kalamazoo County Circuit Judge Paul Bridenstine sentenced Pickett to five consecutive sentences of eight to 15 years in prison on the charges of operating while intoxicated causing death for the five people killed on June 9, 2016.

He also sentenced Pickett to 35 to 55 years for each of five counts of second-degree murder but those will be served concurrently to, or at the same time as, the other sentences.
