NCAA opens investigation into MSU in Nassar scandal

Michigan State University trustees backpedaled on dismissive comments from their vice chair Tuesday as the NCAA opened an investigation into the university’s handling of the Larry Nassar scandal.

The NCAA sent a letter of inquiry to MSU, formally opening an investigation, MSU spokesman Jason Cody confirmed, the same day trustee Joel Ferguson apologized for referring to sex abuse by the former university doctor as “this Nassar thing.”

Ferguson retracted the “inadvertent comment” made on a Lansing radio show, saying he recognizes the suffering of female victims of former MSU doctor Larry Nassar. His apology came in the form of a statement sent by Kelly Rossman-McKinney, a Lansing public relations specialist.

“I’m sorry that I sounded so insensitive because I am really not,” Ferguson, an influential trustee who has served on MSU’s board for 30 years, said in an interview with The Detroit News. “I’m a guy who has three daughters and one granddaughter … I am very sympathetic and for everything that these young ladies who were abused (need)...

Ferguson comes across as a complete ignoramus. MSU is a text book example of how not to handle a scandal.

Mr. Geddert began his education with Alpena Schools in 6th grade and discovered his interest in gymnastics when gymnastics was introduced as part of the PE curriculum at Sanborn. From that introduction through high school, John trained, competed, and earned 3 varsity letters. John was co-captain of the AHS Gymnastics team during his senior year and graduated with scholastic honors. He attended Central Michigan University on an athletic scholarship, and during his senior year, he began coaching the Mt. Pleasant High School Gymnastics team. It was at this point that John found that coaching was his passion. To further his coaching knowledge, John moved to Maryland to accept a job at one of the top private club gymnastics programs, finding his way back to Michigan in 1984. After taking the Great Lakes Gymnastics Club to national prominence, John and his wife Kathryn started Gedderts’ Twistars USA Gymnastics Club in 1996. Twistars has etched its place as one of the top gymnastics clubs in the country. John is the most decorated women’s gymnastics coach in Michigan gymnastics history. His 28-year win/loss club record is an unprecedented 2274 wins and 62 defeats in state championship competition! In February of 2011, his star athlete, Jordyn Wieber, captured her second American Cup All Around Title, narrowly defeating the reigning world AA champion from Russia at the time. In October, 2011, John was named the head coach of the USA World Gymnastics Team competing in the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan. Not only did the USA win the gold medal in the team competition, BUT his personally trained athlete, Jordyn Wieber, won the gold in the All Around competition, becoming one of only five US gymnasts to accomplish this feat. John was voted the US Elite Coach of the Year in 2012 and was later named the Head Coach for the USA Girls Gymnastics Olympic Team that earned a Gold Medal in London. This was only the 2nd team in US history to accomplish this feat.

Nassar expected to be sentenced today for sex assaults

Lansing – Former sports doctor Larry Nassar is expected Wednesday to learn his punishment for sexually abusing young athletes, after seven days of testimony by more than 150 of his victims.

Among those expected to speak in Ingham County Circuit Court is Rachael Denhollander, the first woman to publicly accuse Nassar of committing assault during medical treatment. Denhollander’s story led to Nassar being investigated, fired from Michigan State University and prosecuted.

Prosecutors are seeking a sentence of 40-125 years for Nassar, 54, who pleaded guilty in November to seven counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. He has already been sentenced to 60 years in prison for possessing child ...
