U.S. District Judge Janet Ness gave Nassar, a former Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics doctor, a sentence that was the toughest possible for three charges to which he admitted guilt in July. A starting point for Ness to consider was between 22-27 years.

Under federal law, Neff was able to consider the scope of NassarÂ’s crimes, including his sexual assault of young girls by digital penetration during medical visits, to which he also admitted guilt last month...

MSU: Nassar internal probe report doesnÂ’t exist

Lansing — Michigan State University cannot release an “investigative report” on an internal probe into its handling of criminal activity by former gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar because no such document exists, according to an attorney representing the school.

Former federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, who led the internal probe, defended MSU on Wednesday in a letter to Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, who had asked the university release the “Fitzgerald findings” to external law enforcement agencies.

But the university cannot produce an investigate report demanded by victim attorneys because “there is no investigative report,” Fitzgerald told Schuette as calls mount for an independent investigation of the school...

Division marked early days of Larry Nassar probe

Lansing — Former interim Ingham County Prosecutor Gretchen Whitmer and a top assistant are denying a police chief’s claim that their office initially hesitated to prosecute Dr. Larry Nassar on allegations of sexual misconduct.

Michigan State University Police Chief Jim Dunlap told The Detroit News that Whitmer wanted to charge Nassar in a child 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 case that she thought would be “relatively easy to convict on” but said the assault allegations could be “much more difficult to take to trial,” a characterization Whitmer called “patently false.” ...

MSU's Simon passes on raise as Nassar controversy brews

East Lansing — Michigan State University President Lou Anna K. Simon was offered and declined a $150,000 pay raise Friday amid controversy over how the university handled sexual assault complaints against Larry Nassar.

Simon and the MSU Board of Trustees agreed to transfer that amount into a university scholarship fund and also to establish a $10 million fund for mental health services for sexual assault survivors.

Nassar, a former MSU physician who worked with gymnasts, was sentenced last week to 60 years in prison for possessing child 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬. He has also pleaded guilty to assaulting girls while working for the university during his more than 20-year tenure.

Since becoming president in 2005, Simon has often declined a raise, according to MSU Trustee Joel Ferguson, a member of the Board of Trustee compensation committee...

Nassar victims get 4 days to speak before sentencing

Four days have been set aside for victims to speak before disgraced former doctor Larry Nassar is sentenced in Ingham Circuit Court for first-degree criminal sexual conduct — and Nassar will sit in the witness box to hear them all, the Michigan Attorney General’s Office said Tuesday.

Ingham Circuit Judge Rosemarie Aquilina initially scheduled two days for victims to make statements when Nassar pleaded guilty in November, but two days have added in case they are needed, said Andrea Bitely, spokeswoman for the Attorney GeneralÂ’s Office.

The case in Ingham County involved seven victims, but Aquilina ruled that all 125 victims who complained to MSU about Nassar sexually assaulting them under the guise of medical treatment could make a victim-impact statement either in person, in writing or through audio or video recordings.

The date for victim statements also was moved from Jan. 12 to 9 a.m. Jan. 16. If needed, they will continue on Jan. 17-19...

McKayla Maroney says USA Gymnastics tried to silence her abuse story
by Sarah Fitzpatrick and Tracy Connor

When Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney came forward this fall with her story of being repeatedly molested by the team's doctor, USA Gymnastics publicly praised her for having the "courage" to hold a predator accountable.

But a lawsuit filed Wednesday by Maroney alleges that USA Gymnastics actually tried to silence her nearly a year earlier by making her sign a non-disclosure agreement as part of a financial settlement she needed to pay for psychological treatment.

Maroney's attorney, John Manly, called the confidentiality agreement "hypocritical, immoral and in this case illegal."

"Those responsible for this should be removed from the Olympic movement and USA Gymnastics," Manly told NBC News. "If they would treat one of the most famous athletes in world like this, how poorly would they treat a recreational gymnast abused by her coach." ...

Witness: MSU knew Nassar asked her to leave girlÂ’s exam

A key witness in the civil lawsuits stemming from the Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal said she told Michigan State University police that the former doctor asked her to leave an examining room while he examined a young girl — and then she was fired for speaking out.

Diane Rork, a registered medical assistant who used to work at MSU medical clinics, said Nassar told her to leave an examining room before she finished completing a chart of a girl younger than 13 that he was going to examine in March 2016.

“Don’t worry about it,” said Rork, recalling what Nassar told her. “I’ll take care of it. You can leave.”

She told The Detroit News she thought nothing of it until allegations emerged that Nassar was sexually assaulting young girls under the guise of a medical treatment. She said she learned from a newspaper report that he was supposed to have someone in the room with him during medical procedures after he was investigated in 2014...

MSUÂ’s Nassar probe slow to talk to victims

The law firms hired to represent Michigan State University in the Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal have interviewed only a few of the 148 victims involved in civil lawsuits — even though one of the firms has been working for the university for nearly 15 months.

Critics say that lack of outreach to the victims demonstrates the universityÂ’s disregard for uncovering how NassarÂ’s sexual abuse was allowed to continue unchecked for nearly two decades. University President Lou Anna Simon promised a thorough investigation last February.

Larissa Boyce was one of the first young women to tell an MSU employee about Nassar. Although she told her story publicly last March, she said she has heard from no one at the university...

Nichols, who was a top contender for the 2016 Olympic team before an injury, said the abuse and Nassar's grooming of her began when she was 15 years old and experiencing back problems during a training camp at the famed Karolyi Ranch...

On Friday, lawyers for Twistars, a Lansing-area gymnastics club, and its owner John Geddert filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit. Twistars is one of the locations where some of the 141 women and girls who've filed suit say Nassar sexually abused them. According to the motion, Nassar volunteered his time at the club but was never under contract or an employee. The motion says Geddert wasn't a witness to any alleged abuse by Nassar and didn't learn of any allegations until after he was arrested. It also says the statute of limitations has run out on most of the claims.
