USA Gymnastics: Maroney can speak about Nassar

Gymnast McKayla Maroney can speak publicly about being a victim of former Michigan State University doctor Larry Nassar despite a settlement agreement’s confidentiality clause.

USA Gymnastics said Tuesday in a statement on its website that it wouldn’t penalize the Olympic-gold-medalist if she decided to speak about her experience as one of Nassar’s victims. Based in Indianapolis, USA Gymnastics is a nonprofit and the national governing body for the sports in the United States.

“USA Gymnastics has not sought and will not seek any money from McKayla Maroney for her brave statements made in describing her victimization and abuse by Larry Nassar, nor for any victim impact statements she wants to make to Larry Nassar at this hearing or at any subsequent hearings related to his sentencing,” its statement said...

What MSU knew: 14 warned of Nassar abuse
8 women reported abuse claims, at least one of which reached president

Reports of sexual misconduct by Dr. Larry Nassar reached at least 14 Michigan State University representatives in the two decades before his arrest, with no fewer than eight women reporting his actions, a Detroit News investigation has found.

Among those notified was MSU President Lou Anna Simon, who was informed in 2014 that a Title IX complaint and a police report had been filed against an unnamed physician, she told The News on Wednesday.

“I was informed that a sports medicine doctor was under investigation,” said Simon, who made the brief comments after appearing in court Wednesday to observe a sentencing hearing for Nassar. “I told people to play it straight up, and I did not receive a copy of the report. That’s the truth.”

Among the others who were aware of alleged abuse were athletic trainers, assistant coaches, a university police detective and an official who is now MSU’s assistant general counsel, according to university records and accounts of victims who spoke to The News...

I've watched as many of the survivor statements as I could since Monday. I feel that I owe it to them to listen to what they have to say. I don't know any of these courageous young women, but they speak for women in all walks of life who have sexually abused. My thoughts and prayers are with them and their families. Judge Aquilina is absolutely amazing!

Judge to Nassar: Nothing as ‘harsh’ as victim treatment

Lansing – The attorney for disgraced Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar presented the judge presiding over his sentencing with a letter expressing concern for his mental health as he listens to four days worth of victim impact statements.

Judge Rosemarie Aquilina refused to be swayed by the six-page, single-spaced, typed letter from Nassar, reminding him he is required to sit there and pay attention.

“You may find it harsh that you are here listening,” she said. “But nothing is as harsh as what your victims endured for thousands of hours collectively, you spent thousands of hours perpetrating criminal sexual conduct on minors.” ...

Lawmakers call for MSU’s Simon to resign

Lansing – Calls for Michigan State University President Lou Anna Simon to resign or be forced out of office mounted Thursday in the wake of a Detroit News report that sexual assault allegations against former gymnastics Dr. Larry Nassar reached at least 14 university representatives over two decades.

Michigan Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof, R-West Olive, and Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich, D-Flint, urged the university’s Board of Trustees to “act swiftly” and remove Simon from her post, saying the “MSU community deserves better from its leadership.”

Democratic State House Minority Leader Sam Singh and Sen. Curtis Hertel Jr. of East Lansing, along with GOP Sen. Margaret O’Brien of Portage and Democratic Rep. Jeremy Moss of Southfield were among those who urged Simon to step down. They joined the university’s student newspaper and House Speaker Tom Leonard, who called for her resignation call five weeks ago....

I have to be out for a while this morning but hope to be home by 1:00PM for the sentencing - if it actually takes place today. Judge Aquilina wants to give everyone who wishes to speak an opportunity to do so, and more victims/survivors have come forward than were initially going to provide statements. Judge has already said that sentencing might not happen until Monday or Tuesday.

"Play it straight” is how President Lou Anna Simon says she advised her Michigan State University staff to handle allegations of sexual misconduct against a MSU physician. But Simon has not played it straight herself, choosing instead to pull a curtain over questions of culpability by university officials in the serial molestation of young girls and women at the hands of Dr. Larry Nassar.

As such, Simon has lost credibility and the confidence of many MSU stakeholders. She should step down or be removed by the board of trustees...

Jordyn Wieber was first to provide a statement in Court this morning. She had not previously disclosed her abuse at the hands of Larry Nassar.
