Glenn Hustin Jr., known to most as "Lenny," was last seen on Feb. 5, 2001 in Middleton in southern Gratiot County. He had ridden his bicycle to work at Fulton Country Corners and parked it at the side of the building. He was reported missing less than a week later.

Hustin Jr., 30, disappeared just days before he was scheduled to testify in a court case involving his employer and landlord Roger Eugene Brown, according to an article in the Morning Sun in July 2011. Brown had been charged with larceny of a firearm, a five-year felony. The case against him was later dismissed.

Hustin Jr.'s bike was found about 17 miles away in Ithaca on Feb. 20, just over a week after he was reported missing. His family said his apartment was untouched, stocked with the pop he liked to drink and with a pile of clean laundry by his front door.

“I’d love to have a closing,” Brenda Litwiller, Hustin Jr.'s sister, told the Morning Sun 12 years ago. “And know what happened.”

Over the years police have followed up on tips regarding Hustin Jr.'s whereabouts, said Michigan State Police Det. Sgt. Ben Rowell. Rowell was assigned to continue investigating Hustin Jr.'s disappearance last year.

In the past year, additional police searches have been done in Gratiot County, he said, though he declined to discuss details of the investigation.

"There have been some developments over the last year," Rowell said. "It's still being actively investigated."

Hustin Jr., 5'5 and 115 pounds with brown eyes, would be 53 today.

Details of Disappearance

Hustin was last seen at his residence in the 100 block of North Caroline Street in Middleton, Michigan on the evening of February 5, 2001. He usually rode his bicycle to and from at the Fulton Country Corners gas station, but he'd left the bike at the gas station so a female co-worker gave him a ride home that day. She dropped him off there, and is the last person known to have seen him.

Hustin didn't show up for work the next day, which is uncharacteristic of him, and he has never been heard from again. His apartment was found intact after his disappearance with no evidence of foul play. His clean laundry was sitting by the door.

Two weeks later, his bicycle, a blue girl's model with a wire basket on the front, was discovered abandoned next to a trucking company warehouse in Ithaca, Michigan. There was no sign of him at the scene.

Hustin was slated to testify as a witness in a criminal trial in Gratiot, Michigan, one week after his disappearance. He had allegedly witnessed his landlord and employer, Roger Eugene Brown, steal a rifle and a bow from another tenant's apartment, and also saw Brown assault a child in Hustin's apartment.

Brown was charged with larceny of a firearm and assault. The larceny charge against Brown was dismissed after Hustin vanished because he was the only eyewitness and prosecutors did not have enough evidence to proceed without his testimony. Had Brown been convicted, he could have faced up to five years in prison. He pleaded guilty in the assault case and was fined.

Hustin's sister tried to investigate his disappearance five years after he vanished. She stated that she felt people were following her during that time, she received threats, and one point an unknown person smashed her car windows. Eventually she gave up her investigation without finding out anything of substance. She believes her brother is dead.

Since his disappearance, Hustin hasn't cashed any of the government assistance checks or income tax refund checks issued to him, he hasn't accessed his bank account, and there has been no activity on his Social Security number.

He is described as a happy, social person who enjoyed his job and would go out of his way to help anyone who needed assistance. He kept three pet cats and enjoyed country music and the television show Dukes of Hazzard. He is a graduate of Fulton High School. He had been planning to move out of his apartment prior to his disappearance. Hustin's case remains unsolved.

Circumstances of Disappearance

Hustin was last seen at his residence in the vicinity of Davis and Caroline St. in Middleton, MI. He was expected to arrive at his employer the morning of February 6th, but did not arrive. He was also scheduled to appear as a witness in an upcoming criminal case. He disappeared just days before he was expected to testify in a court case involving his employer and landlord, Roger Eugene Brown. The court case concerned allegations that Brown had entered a rental unit and taken property that belonged to a tenant. Hustin was allegedly with him.

At first, Hustin told police that Brown had taken nothing. He recanted, and in a written statement, he said Brown was upset about the condition of the trailer and took a bow and shotgun. Brown was charged with larceny of a firearm, a five-year felony, and a preliminary exam was set for February 14, 2001. According to police reports obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, Hustin was frightened that Brown would evict or fire him.

There has been no activity on Hustin's Social Security number. He had received government assistance checks and income tax refunds, and none of those checks were ever picked up. His bank account wasn't checked.

Hustin often rode a bike and the last time he was seen, he had ridden the bicycle to work and parked it at the side of the building. The bike also went missing. Investigative reports concerned who had seen the bike last, when it had been moved, and what side of the building it had been seen at first and then later. Ultimately, the bike was found in Ithaca on February 20, 2001.
