Did all manage to escape the fire?
It is ground floor so people can escape through windows,
and there are many of them.
Although in panic stampede might occur.

At the presser, LE said they expected to find bodies of people who were upstairs and unable to escape the fire. We'll know more at the 5pm presser, I'm assuming.

Suspect named in MSM:

The deranged madman who killed at least two people and injured nine others at a Michigan Latter-day Saints church, torching the building and opening fire on fleeing congregants and their families, has been identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, The Post can confirm.

... I am without words ... what on earth is happening in our world? And what can we do to stop the insanity?
This act of violence has me destroyed. I pray for the victims ... for their families ... for the LDS community and for all of man/woman kind. How on earth to we find peace ... this is heartbreaking!

I had to take a break from the thread for a while and watched a Bette Davis movie. It has gotten to the point where I'm almost afraid to turn on a news program or read a newspaper because there is so much violence being reported. I'm 75 years old and am shocked and saddened by what is going on around the world. Thankfully, most of my life is in the rearview mirror, and I'm glad that I grew up in an era when these mass shootings weren't happening on an almost daily basis.

Do we know how old the building is? Im looking in MI databases and they want money
If it's an older building, perhaps they didn't have fire sprinklers. It's probably similar to many other church buildings in the US of the same age. We don't know what kind of fire protection the church had. But all responsibility ultimately belongs to the attacker.

ETA, from same link:

Law enforcement sources confirmed that Sanford, from nearby Burton, Michigan, is the lone suspect.

"Sanford, a US Marine veteran... served in Iraq from 2004-2008... Social media accounts believed to be connected to Sanford show he’s a family man, with a wife and young son."

Last night's shooter in North Carolina was also a Marine who served in Iraq during those same years.

I hope his wife and little boy are safe.

My son also served in Iraq (Army), hence my name here at WS. He was stop lossed twice. That was a difficult time for our family.

I’m holding all the LDS church members and his wife in my thoughts. This is a horrible attack, I can’t imagine how they will be able to reconcile what happened to them today.

I'm curious if these 2 men knew each other. I'm sure they will be looking at their online activity, but even if they didn't know each other I wonder if it's possible they met online in some way maybe bonding over prior service and being Marines who served in Iraq.

I cannot recall someone deliberately starting a massive fire like this in a building full of people, except on 9/11/2001. It takes some effort and planning to start such an inferno, IMO.
Well, he’s a veteran of the U.S. Marines who served in Iraq. Maybe he learned how to start fires there. He may have also brought something with him, such as a homemade bomb.

IED’s were found in his truck at the scene.
