MI - Gunman opens fire at Central Michigan Univ., kills parents James Davis Sr. & Diva Davis, 2018

That’s what I was thinking too. Whatever hospital did not admit him really missed the boat on thus, IMO.

According to article his parents brought him back to the dorm.

A 19-year-old student suspected of killing his parents at a Central Michigan University dormitory had been acting so strangely the day before that campus police called his mother and then took him to a hospital for suspected drug abuse, authorities say.

Central Michigan University police Chief Bill Yeagley told reporters that James Eric Davis Jr's parents had just picked him up from the hospital and brought him to his dorm to pack up when the shooting happened on Friday.

Doesn't sound like he needed to be in the hospital for any physical reasons. His behavior wasn't "logical" so he was taken to the medical center for that. There was a concerned his behavior was due to drugs. Parents picked him up from the medical center. Presumably they were trying to get him help. Not sure how the hospital was supposed to know he would manage to get a gun.

They couldn’t have known that, but it seems they could have determined he was unstable and admitted him to a psych unit for
Further evaluation.

Was the gun in the son’s car or the father’s car? Don’t even know if the son had a car. Thanks.

Not sure where the gun was, but I'm guessing in the parents' vehicle since it was JD, Sr.'s weapon. JD, Jr. had a car on campus that was towed and impounded by LE while search for suspect was taking place.

He's 19, legally an adult, which would probably make involuntary commitment for drug or mental treatment more difficult, imo.

They couldn’t have known that, but it seems they could have determined he was unstable and admitted him to a psych unit for
Further evaluation.

That's obvious in retrospect but might not have been when he went to the hospital. Doesn't sound like he was threatening anyone at the time, so I am not sure if the hospital even could have kept him.

In this article he does seem completely delusional

"He said someone was out to hurt him, someone was out to harm him," Yeagley said, adding that when officers pressed Davis for more details, he was "extremely vague."
Campus police launched an investigation into the Davis' complaint and even interviewed a man Davis said was armed and wanted to hurt him, but ultimately police decided the man "did not pose any risk to Davis or anyone else."

I wonder if he got a drug laced with something. Or did whatever drug he took cause his brain to totally malfunction? People can be permanently damaged by a drug reaction,

....while parents were in his dorm room Davis, jr. went to the parking lot and got a gun out of his car, came back to his
dorm room and shot father then mother. Another student used his phone to record Davis jr. coming from parking lot w/ gun in his hand.

Forensics on gun match gun used.

From another site, there were at least 2 other students in dorm rm when shooting took place and had to climb over
Davis, sr. who was sprawled across doorway on floor.

So sad [emoji20]

I read the latest news and see he was caught on a train. Sometimes on WS cases someone will throw out the idea that a perp escaped on a train and it often sounds far fetched - like something from history not current-day. But....here we have a perp who escaped on a train!

Glad he is caught.

I'm curious, as we all are, if this was a mental-health issue that had been brewing or if it was triggered from drugs he took within the last day or so. Either way, very tragic and my heart goes out to the surviving family.

Maybe that's not the right term. But I've seen several statements that have said no guns allowed on campus.

I am wondering though. If the Dad
Was an officer can u still carry?

The initial report was a bit confusing, but he wasn't caught on a train. Someone riding on a train saw him near the tracks.

"The suspect was seen and reported by an individual on a train passing through the north end of campus shortly after midnight," the university said in a statement.

Oh. Well, then. :) I'd better work on my reading comprehension!

What a good spotter the train-passenger is.

All in all, glad he was caught.

I’ve been looking for that, but still haven’t found an explicit answer. From thus, I would say "no"?

Michigan law expressly prohibits concealed handgun license holders from carrying on or in a dormitory or classroom of a community college, college, or university. See Mich. Comp. Laws § 750.237a(1)(h). Universities also retain the authority to restrict firearms on other parts of campus, and generally choose to do so, like the University of Michigan.

Reference to law on Michigan college campuses:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campus_carry_in_the_United_States

State law bans the concealed carry of guns in dormitories or classrooms of colleges, but not college grounds. Open carry is not illegal.[13] May also carry if the parent of a child in school.[14] May also carry at Michigan State University grounds but not buildings.[15] May keep a gun in a locked car in parking lot.

Just adding that he was returned to hospital Saturday am, because when apprehended and arrested he was nonsensical still. This makes me wonder if he ever made sense before he was turned over to his family.

I don't know if he was making any sense when apprehended, but he managed to go get the gun (did he know where his father kept it?) and shoot his parents.

Also read he was hypothermic. What was weather like in the area that day, while he was evading capture?

Not clear on whether he brought the gun to the dorm when arriving from the hospital or did he go back out to the lot and get the gun after going to the dorm with his parents?

Would wonder if the hospital got a really clear picture of how he was acting and reason he was brought to the hospital by campus police??
