Hello, I am a news writer from New Mexico and am working an article, as just becoming news that human remains were found here near the Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico all that I've read so far does make it a very possible reality as it was mentioned he loved parks and was active, and yes it is common to go to El Paso if on a run to pick up and deliver back to Northeast, and would net you some serious cash and a cell phone would not be allowed to have on trip. We have many go missing in this area but honestly after reading these last 14 years feel that indeed Jacobs story has high probability and should be included in checking for sure. I have submitted another missing man from Arizona. And details are vagues so not even estimate of age or condition of remains has been told. I have contacted Traverse Sheriffs Department and am awaiting return call will update and God Bless. May whoever was found may their film now have closure.

Gotta say…this does make sense. Hopefully he is living his best life somewhere. I just wish he’d let his family know, if able.

I'm sorry but think to this is so far off base from being reality of his life story, he just got out of marriage with wife and into a relationship with a female after years of secretly being gay? To run away? That's odd, yeah 31 year old male siblings dote on others when their older brother has left home, and father was in and out so could have easily been influenced by women in his life, and having respect for females as he's a nice person to the point he's still friend with wife,and they think him playful and silly does not make him a bi that would go to bathhouses in the city, seems he would respect himself more than that, He had a gay friend, people not secure in even thier bi-sexuality allow that if their, closeted or self hating due to fear of association, also "trans" going to Catholic school is just going to school in uniform, most tribes are okay with " two spirits" if that were the case, but just seems to me even if he were bisexual not even gay cause obviously had relations and a kid, your assessment is a bit much. Coming from small towns by age 30 in a big family not many secrets your siblings don't know about you or that can be kept. The only things that make sense is he got an opportunity to make money, the local plug gave em an address to go to in ft worth. Dude found a way to get drugs and a car fast and did not care of consequences.

After reading and reading, listening to the podcast twice, researching all characters involved and as a gay man myself having come from a similar background, I am of the opinion Jake was in great conflict with himself as a closeted gay man. It is not just one clue, it is all the clues together which make me believe this. The close friendship with Ken, spending time with him while married, why did Jake's marriage fail? what was the mysterious reason for her to resent Ken? He lived in a small town where homophobia would reign, Jake tended to be embarrassed about things, Gary (the last person who saw him) is gayer than a 3 dollar bill, he is currently out in Seattle working as a hairdresser, this also explains why Gary has not be forthcoming, he is keeping Jake's secret as promised, Jake just wanted to run, be free, be who he was, maybe even turn trans, i think he was in love with his friend ken and was totured over that, ken who is very straight would have been clueless and also disgusted if he ever found out, i would imagine that he fooled around with Gary, Jake's ex wife is also rather quiet and accepting of it all, they got along so well yet couldn't stay married? Jake already has a very feminine look, he had very feminine attributes. Described as "playful" and silly/crazy. You don't describe straight men as "playful." In the pictures he's 31 - he looks 12. Not a hair anywhere, did he shave? he was sensitive, didn't like the boys he was babysitting to fight, fed up with being a mechanic, probably a profession that hid his secret really well, Jake like to go to parks alone (that is totally a stereotype, but hey), Jake didn't really date, the supposed new girlfriend he had has never been seen, he hated being a mechanic but the military is also where gay men who feel they must keep their secret go to "come off straight." I would like to know what drugs he was into - it could give a clue, guys like Jake would have been drawn to ecstacy, meth, coke, his catholic schooling would have made it clear that living as a open homosexual would mean eternal hell, at ken's beck and call for cigarettes and snacks while at work (30 year old straight guys don't dote on another guy like that especially ones that have two kids a job and school AND in the National Guard AND a supposed girlfriend). Again, just my opinion and it makes all the sense in the world. Happens more than people are willing to believe - we are not even close to truly accepting gay people as equals, especially in small towns. People live in terror of being found out and in silent torture not to be free to be who they are, love who they want to love, you know just be normal like everyone else around them. Therefore, some people are not ever able to come out to their family and friends, Jake was too embarrassed even to tell anyone he wrecked his car in exactly the same place, think that kind of person is going to feel comfortable coming out in Po Dunk, Michigan? His age is a clue as well. 31 - he's had enough of hiding and finally just can't take it anymore. Doesn't want to answer any questions or have any one follow him, he's out, free to live a new life as the person who God made him to be. I do hope he's alive... the Social Security issue does bother me, but he could have gone totally off the gird - living on an Indian Reservation - laws are very different there. Maybe in New Mexico (he did head west), left his car on the side of the road, and hitched a ride, the last leg to NM so as not to not leave a trail to his final destination, Mesalaro Apache Reservation is due West from Sweetwater, the car got stolen and taken to Mexico where it was eventually trashed... I hope this helps in some way.... it truly makes sense if you consider the emotional and psychological pain he was probably secretly in. OH one more thing - the sighting in South Chicago... probably spotted at a gay bathhouse or gay bar. The guy who spotted him didn't want to be identified because he admitted he wasn't supposed to be where he was, but being scared about being caught by his wife visiting a sporting goods store makes absolutely NO sense. It was good of him to call anyway, even if it couldn't be verified. Ok, i think that's really it....

I think there is honestly a lot of speculation in your post about Jacob. However, you are correct he looks younger and significantly more feminine than a straight man in his position should, and I think that stuff, feminine looks, is in the DNA of some gay men (but not all). I read that They already have facial recognition software which can identify sexuality based on physical attributes with 95% accuracy.

As tempting as it would be to say that Jacob was gay because of his disposition and appearance, whether true or not, I am not quite convinced that his magical adventure in March/April 2010 directly involved his sexual orientation. No, I think it was drugs. Like everyone else I think it was drugs. For a few reasons. One, disappearing after signing up to do a long distance courier job is statistically more likely than disappearing because you went to go hook up or run away with a lover. Karen Denise Wells is a potential example.

This was 2010. If we were talking 1995 or 2000 I might be more inclined to agree with you. In 2010 I was in my mid 20s, openly gay, sometimes I lived in small towns even before then, and while yes there was an overhanging aura of taboo, most men who were attracted to other men would secretly but nonchalantly do internet hookups and FWB deeds with other guys in their local area by 2010. I have doubts Jacob would go on an abrupt 1000 mile roadtrip in the middle of the night at a blazing clip for sex, when he could just as easily accomplish this in Michigan. I won’t say your theory is impossible, and I agree there is a chance Jacob was gay, but I still think the drug run theory is far more likely IMO.

It is sometimes cognitive bias but I also will propose gay angles to disappearances where the idea has not been proposed when I feel it is appropriate: the case of Cody Matney is one such case where I’m suspicious of this. I recently contributed my analysis in the Brian Shaffer case that I believe his cell phone pings yield vague evidence he was victimized by a homosexual predator (someone kept Brian’s phone charged and able to ping WEEKS/MONTHS after he was last seen but did not make any outbound calls on it).

But so far I think Jacob’s case is drug-related. Thanks for your time!

So, I found this forum while browsing for information about Jacob Cabinaw's disappearance. I read through what I could due to time restraints at the moment. Recently I have spoken with someone who is very close to the family (and asked to remain anonymous) to find out what they thought what happened. From my understanding the video that they have been shown was extremely grainy and could not be confirmed as Jacob. They have confirmed there was a possible hit from his car in Mexico but from my understanding, they don't have confirmation or any idea on how it got there. Also if he was going to see his brother in Texas as a surprise he would have told someone. The only theory I have heard from them was they possibly think he got involved in the drug crowd and ran into some bad people while in it, but that's the only thing I've personally have heard.

Some details about myself, I was born and raised in Traverse City. Jacob and I attended NMC at the same time and were in the same program, but I don't believe we had any classes together. He is ten years older than me. I'm also Native American / Caucasian mixed so I'm familiar with his family and others he was around. I also live less than five miles from his mother's home and I am extremely familiar with the route he would have taken to get home, so familiar I could take his route to get to my place of employment. I have my own theories, but due to the idea he was heading to Texas and his car was supposedly found, it would throw my theory right out.

Thank you for everyone for posting in this thread over the last fifteen years. I hope one day the family has closure.
