WARREN, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - The family of a missing Warren man is speaking out for the first time.

*********
His family told CBS Detroit's Cryss Walker it's not like him to go without speaking to his children, or missing work, and now they're frantically looking for answers to find the father of two.

**********
Houser says Wilkins is a youth football coach for the Schoolcraft Browns, a team his son also plays for, and he never misses a game or practice.

"I could be two minutes late and he's texting me, 'Why is my son not at practice? Hurry up and take him,'" Houser said. "He's very into it with our son and he is the coach. So, I mean it's just not like him to miss no practice."

The 27-year-old was last seen June 8 at his Regency Club apartment in Warren.

His brother, Marcus Wilkins, says he would never go this long without reaching out to his loved ones.

"And today was his daughter's (Kindergarten) graduation," Marcus Wilkins said. "He did not attend that as well."

According to phone records, calls to his phone went silent after 11:22 a.m. on the day he went missing.

***********
Wilkins is a Black male with a light complexion, 6 feet tall, and 240 pounds.

If you have any information on his whereabouts, call Warren Police at 586-574-4781.

James Wilkins wouldn’t have missed his 8-year-old son's football games or his daughter's kindergarten graduation. And definitely would not have missed Father’s Day.

Wilkins, 27, was last seen June 8th by his roommate at his apartment complex off Hayes near 10 Mile in Warren.

Earlier that day – he had messaged back and forth with his family and then nothing.

Investigators say – they have connected a car to his disappearance. It’s a 1999, tan Mercury Sable, with the Michigan plate of EPR-6700.

Wonder how the car is connected to his disappearance?

“My son has never been arrested for anything, he is an athlete, he is a good dad and a good brother and cousin to all of his family that is standing here behind me,” said Edwards. “I need my son home because he does not deserve this to happen to him.

“He has done nothing all of his life but be a good boy and he has never given us any problems.”

Detective Paul Kulisek said a 1999 tan Mercury Sable station wagon with a Michigan license plate number EPR6700 is suspected to be involved in the Warren man’s disappearance.

“We have had several detectives working on this investigation for the past 10 days and have narrowed down a number of leads,” said Kulisek. “The station wagon is key.

“We want to bring James back home to his family.”

I hate so much that people of color feel the need to clarify things like this when family members go missing. Honestly it's disturbing. Seems many of us assume these things about some people, and not others. I pray that James comes home safe and sound, but I'm really worried. Person missing with their car is usually a no-go situation. :'(

Not a lot of Mercury Sables on the road these days and they've got the plate so they must know who was driving it....

All speculation and my opinion

From the articles linked above, it seems that James was texting with his girlfriend when the texts abruptly stopped at 11:22 am. I actually got the impression that the last text James sent was at 11:10 am and the last text his girlfriend sent was at 11:22 am, but idk. If so, I’m guessing it was that last text that she sent that appeared green on her phone

According to the same articles/links, James was last seen by his roommate “outside his apartment at approximately 1:00 pm”.

One obvious question is: Where was James when he was texting with his girlfriend at 11:10 am? I’m sure LE will be able to determine the location of James’ phone at the time of his last text. Was he at his apartment? Was his roommate there at the time? If so, what does his roommate say James was doing between 11:10 am and approx 1:00 pm when he saw him “outside his apartment”?

Other obvious questions (to me anyway): Who owns the car? and, Why does LE think foul play?

I hope James is found soon

All jmo

"The family is very concerned, and it is very disturbing to them that he just all of a sudden is missing," Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer told CBS Detroit.

"He has not communicated, nobody has communicated as far as providing information but we do know that there is someone out there.

"We are asking the public to give us any information they have as far as his whereabouts. They can remain anonymous, the information they provide will be confidential."

"The best father, he loved his children, he was very active in their lives, he wanted to be there for every milestone, every graduation," Wilkins' cousin Anne Lynn told CBS Detroit.

"He just missed Father's Day and I am sure it was one of the hardest days in life for his children because they are used to having James there with them."

Missing Father, James Wilkins

James Wilkins' roommate has been charged with his murder. James' body has not been found.

The roommate of a Warren man who was reported missing on June 9 was arrested Thursday and was arraigned Friday in 37th District Court on charges of first-degree murder. A second person was also arrested and charged as an accessory after the fact.

James Wilkins, 27, was reported missing by his family and was last seen outside his Regency Club apartment near Frazho and Hayes roads in early June.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office authorized the following charges against Wilkins’ roommate Donald Renfroe, 27, of Warren: first-degree murder (mandatory life offense), tampering with evidence (10-year felony), concealing the death of an individual (5-year felony), and felony firearm (2- year felony).

The charges of tampering with evidence and accessory after the fact to a felony (5-year felony) were granted against Renfroe’s friend, Darius Glenn, 28,of Detroit, for his alleged role in this case.

*************
Although Wilkins’ body has not been recovered, the Macomb County Prosecutor authorized the first-degree murder charge.

“It is uncommon for a warrant to be issued when a body has not been found, but the evidence collected by the detectives is very compelling,” said Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer. “This is the city’s first reported homicide of 2023 and investigators worked tirelessly from the beginning as foul play was suspected early on in the investigation.

“The fact that the charge of first-degree murder was obtained despite Mr. Wilkins’ body not yet being located speaks to the quality of the investigation and the quantity of critical evidence.”

I am glad there's some degree of closure for this family, and hope there is justice as well. Here are the court records for the POI in the county of arrest. More than one court is listed for that county, but this court had the most recent record, this week. Note: There was a charge of felony larceny filed against Renfroe a week after Mr. Wilkins was reported missing - it is unknown if those crimes are connected. MiCOURT Case Search
