Circumstances of Disappearance:
Clewley was last seen at his remote summer cabin in Chippewa County, Michigan on July 12, 2008. The cabin was located in the Upper Peninsula south of Paradise, Michigan by the Tahquamenon River on the western side of the Tahquamenon Falls State Park. His wife visited him at the cabin on July 10. She didn't like living there and would visit occasionally, while he stayed there alone for weeks at a time. He enjoyed hiking and was familiar with the area for the past 20 years.

On July 13, Clewley never checked in with with his wife as he usually did, and after he failed to do so again the next day, she and other family members asked the police to check on his welfare. Officials arrived at the cabin and found it locked with Clewley nowhere to be found. His dog named Chip, whom he frequently took with him when he went hiking, was also missing. There were no indications of foul play.

Clewley's 1992 Oldsmobile Silhouette van was found on Tahqua Trail at the trail head to the North Country Pathway within a mile or two of his cabin. The gas tank was almost empty and it was unlocked with the keys left inside which was considered uncharacteristic of Clewley's behavior. Despite extensive searches conducted around the cabin and vehicle, he was never located.

Twenty days after Clewley disappeared, Chip reappeared at the cabin. The dog was thin but clean and in good condition, without bug bites or ticks, leading to speculation that someone had cared for it for at least part of the time after Clewley's disappearance.

Clewley was born and raised in Lansing, Michigan. He studied electrical design at Lansing Community College and went on to found Industrial Control Resources, an engineering services company. He also served with the Navy in Guam in the 1950's. Clewley has five children. His disappearance is unsolved and whereabouts remain unknown.
