Missing since March, man found dead in basement of adult care facility where he lived

For five and a half months, Kam Franks' family has been looking everywhere for him. They had lost hope until they got a call this weekend that he had been found.

Franks was found in the basement of the adult care facility where he was reported missing from, back in March.

For the past few years, Kam lived at Faithful Helping Hands Home Care on Detroit's east side. He beat cancer at 15, then in 2001, he was in a horrible car accident, suffering a severe head injury and seizures to follow.

Last Saturday we are told staff at Faithful Helping Hands, was cleaning out a basement room, when they found Kam dead.

Man who vanished from Detroit senior center 5 months ago found dead in facility’s basement

Detroit police said said he left his residence in the 6000 block of Cadieux Road around 9 p.m. March 14. They noted he was in good physical condition, but poor mental condition.

On Saturday, someone inside the assisted living center found Franks’ body in the building’s basement, according to authorities. Detroit police said he died of natural causes, and no foul play is suspected.

When Local 4 first called the facility, looking to speak with management, we were rejected. When we went to the front door of the center, a hostile employee gave no information.

Franks’ family has a lot of questions.

Local 4 has been in touch with state officials, and the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs said the center is approved as a license exempt facility under the public health code, meaning state doesn’t have oversight.

We asked Detroit officials if the city is responsible for oversight, but so far, we haven’t heard back.

Am I right that he was last seen leaving the facility?

Yes, the facility is located at 6232 Cadieux Road. Previous post says Franks went missing "in the 6000 block of Cadieux Road"

In my first post: "Franks was found in the basement of the adult care facility where he was reported missing from, back in March."

If he truly was in "Good physical condition but poor mental condition" why was he allowed to leave? Did he really leave or was he noticed as missing and this was a cover story? So many questions with doubts about getting honest answers.

Police are investigating possible neglect at the facility.

Man missing from Michigan adult care center since March found dead in building’s basement

Franks' sister said that she received a call from someone at the center who told her "he's been in the basement dead the whole time. You got to get over here."

"I can't understand how they didn't think to look right under their noses," she said. "How do they not smell a body in the summer? How do you dismiss that?"

A man who answered the telephone at Faithful Helping Hands Community Services declined to comment to The Associated Press.

Missing man's body found in assisted living center basement

Kam Franks had been living at an adult care facility in Detroit. He’d been there since being severely injured in a car crash. Franks just vanished five months ago. Just gone. No sign of him anywhere. No one at the facility had a clue. Police investigated. Searches were made. No one came up with anything. Family members recently said they were losing hope of ever finding him.

Body of man missing 5 months found in Detroit care facility, police say

Detroit —Police have launched a probe into a longterm care facility where a man’s body was found in the basement five months after he went missing.

Kam Franks' sister said he was known to "roam" and "wander" and that the building he called home should have been the first place authorities looked when he was reported missing.

"All you had to do was be in his company," Kai Franks said Wednesday, two days after her brother's body was located. "He could feed and wash himself. He was physically active. You just had to watch him."...

As the sister of a brother who lives in a “group home” due to disabilities that are more social in nature than physical, this is absolutely terrifying. I cannot fathom how this family feels. I pray he did not suffer.

How did he die, we all wonder?
Did he fall? An autopsy could show broken bones, but would that be enuff to pronounce COD?
Did he have a stroke or heart attack? If either of these, would an autopsy show that after all this time? How?
Suicide?

I'm guessing an autopsy might show COD if there is a bad head or neck injury. (I am not a medical person at all.)
An "Undetermined" result would certainly be very possible here, IMO.
Oh, that poor man. Nobody heard anything.
His grieving family must be a little bit relieved that he has been found, and a lot angry, IMO.
But we don't know much, yet...

In the first post it's mentioned that he had seizures, that could cause a fall if standing up, but depending on what kind of seizures he had, if he needed to be given medication to stop a seizure attack, perhaps it was a case of SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy), SUDEP

Being familiar with the unremitting smell of decay, how did they not find him before now? How?
