GUILTY MI - Patrick Mikes, 55, Troy, 27 July 2012

Movie tickets and burgers on brother's credit card. Dad finds out, altercation takes place in family home, dad goes missing. This is not sounding good. :(

Technically, wouldn't it be dad's card that the 16 y/o had permission to use? I'm sure dad probably kept a pretty close eye on it if that was the case and figured out quickly that the other son had used it w/o permission.

Wonder who was paying for Notre Dame? Pretty expensive school, isn't it?

In these parts, lots of high school kids have their own credit card that is issued in their name but, yes, tied to the folks' account.

Notre Dame is pricy, but this family lives in an affluent neighborhood, and senior Mikes probably does very well. The son who is in pre-med is likely bright and could have won some scholarships, too.

What's confusing to me is that it's been pretty consistently reported that he did go on the bike ride. So did he really? If not, where is the bike? And is that why LE towed some cars from the premises?

It was also reported that both boys gave an inconsistent story as to why it took them so long to report him missing and yet, they feel the older Mikes is a threat to the younger Mikes boy. Has he been threatening and/or violent with him too?

All signs point to it being the older Mikes boy, but he seems so bright and stable (based on his Notre Dame status and reports by the neighbor). I mean, getting busted by his dad with a pithy 100ish dollars on a credit card is going to send him into a murderous rage?

I don't know why I've missed it but I just found this thread. You're right, seems not to be much interest in finding him. I've been upset about this since the weekend--I would be happy to help look for him (I'm not related, don't even know him but the story is just getting me in the heart). I don't know whether they're waiting for the son to give up information or what, but I don't understand why a search of places he was known to ride isn't being done. Maybe because there's no family (right now just the younger son) to organize?

Redmond said blood evidence at the home is being analyzed to see whether it is from Mikes Sr. Auburn Hills Police Detective Brian Martin testified that Mikes Jr. was seen on video July 26 -- and was linked through credit card transactions -- buying single movie tickets at the Star Theater at Great Lakes Crossing mall. One purchase was at 2:04 p.m. and one at 9:11 p.m. In between, he charged a meal for $11.53 at the Johnny Rockets restaurant nearby, Martin said.

Mikes Jr. was home for the summer and was staying in a room in the basement, police said. When investigators entered the home, they found evidence of a "violent encounter" in the basement, Redmond said.

I wonder what that "matter" is in another city?

Mikes Jr.’s attorney, Christopher Andreoff, said his client is a good, intelligent man — a member of the National Honor Society who has been attending the University of Notre Dame on an academic scholarship.

“He has led a very wonderful life as a young teenager and as an adult,” Andreoff said.

####

“There’s no evidence my client had anything to do with his father being missing,” he said.

“(Police) have interviewed the brother who indicated the father was not at the home and did not witness. ...”

At that point, Asadoorian cut Andreoff off.

“If you don’t want me to consider that other matter in another city, why are you telling me things I don’t need to consider? I’m hearing things that, frankly, are alarming to me, and they’re coming from you,” Asadoorian said.

####

Troy Police Capt. Robert Redmond did describe Mikes Jr. as a suspect in his father’s disappearance after the court hearing.

“We’re not solely looking at him,” Redmond said.

“Right now he’s our main suspect, but the investigation will continue.”

Redmond also said authorities are concerned about A. Mikes’ well-being if Patrick Mikes Jr. is released from jail.

“We have fears for the 16-year-old,” he said.

“I’m sure (the charges) did not make (Patrick Mikes Jr.) happy.”
Investigators are still processing evidence.

“(Evidence found) in the basement could indicate more than one person was there,” Redmond said.

He said investigators are no closer to locating Patrick Mikes Sr. or his bicycle. His sons reported him missing Sunday morning and said they had last seen him riding his bicycle on Friday evening.

The matter in another city actually references the father being missing/assault in the house.

The reason it's being referred to like that is because the son is currently only being charged with the financial fraud in Auburn Hills--and whatever happened in the house and/or to his father occurred in Troy. It's all the same county, however.

I've wondered where the regular MI contingent is in this case :waitasec: I would join a search, also, as this is very close to my home, but there are no volunteer searches scheduled or taking place. LE searches are focused in fields/wooded areas along I-75 and M-59, both of which are very heavily-traveled. I can't imagine someone riding a bike along the freeway, so LE must think that Mikes and his bike were transported by car and dumped.

There are dedicated bicycle routes in Troy and neighboring communities. One of my brothers is an avid cyclist, and even though he lives several miles away, he rides along designated routes and sometimes ends up here for a pit stop. We often see cyclists on our street that is close to a dedicated bike path but not technically on the route.

After last evening's/this morning's local news updates, I have a bad feeling about this and don't expect a happy ending. :(

Definitely if he had left on his bike (and to this date I've only seen the sons claim he went for a ride) and had a medical emergency on a bike trail (even from being injured in the house), a cyclist would have found him by now, I think.

I think Pontiac is a likely place, and unfortunately Detroit, like what happened to Jane Bashara.

Based on the description of the crime scene (LE and the prosecutor), if Mikes, Sr. was the victim, it doesn't sound like he would have been able to ride a bike or get very far without leaving "evidence" (blood) along his route.

I wondered if the brothers attended Brother Rice, but it looks like they (or Patrick, Jr., at least) went to U-D. I wonder if the sister went to Marian or Academy of the Sacred Heart? Education is obviously very important to this family, and they seem to have been afforded the best.

Sad situation, and I hope there's a resolution soon.

What bothers me is the father not being reported missing for 2 days. What was the younger brother told if anything by the older brother as to where the father was?

  • #32
^ The brothers gave inconsistent accounts of why they didn't report their father missing until Sunday, so my guess is that if the younger brother wasn't at home when Dad "left on the bike", Patrick, Jr. told him what happened. When questioned separately, younger brother's version unravels because he knows that something bad happened but is afraid to rat on his brother, or he really doesn't know what's going on because he wasn't home at the time of the altercation. :moo:

Troy Police are expected to release new information this afternoon about a missing Troy accountant whose son has been named a suspect in his disappearance.

Police Capt. Robert Redmond said new information on the disappearance of Patrick Mikes Sr., 55, a TRW accountant, will be released at a 3 p.m. news conference at the police department.

Redmond declined to comment on reports that investigators are now searching for Mikes Sr.'s body.

Kviring, 77, said he often saw the elder Patrick Mikes going on bike rides. He said Mikes’ two sons were well-mannered and recalled that when they were children, they would ask his permission before stepping on his lawn to retrieve stray baseballs.

Kviring said he hoped Patrick Mikes Jr. was not involved in whatever happened to his father. “I’d rather believe somebody else did this. ... (It) kind of breaks your heart, something like that,” Kviring said. Sharma said the elder Patrick Mikes kept to himself and was a “total gentleman.”

He said Mikes never remarried after his wife died years ago, instead devoting his time to caring for his three children. Along with the two boys, Mikes has a daughter. Sharma said he last saw Mikes riding his bicycle Friday.

He had heard that blood was found in Mikes’ house, but described that information as “gossip.”

Quick update from noon news (WDIV livestream): Mentioned today's 3:00 news conference and that Patrick Mikes, Jr. is considered a POI in his father's disappearance. Evidence of violent confrontation in basement of home.

I would like to know the timeline during the day prior to Mr. Mikes allegedly going on a bike ride at 5:30PM on Friday. Had he been to work that day? If so, what time did he leave/return? Where were the boys? Do they have summer jobs, and if so, what time did they leave/return? If they don't work, were the brothers at home together during the day? Did either of them have guests? If so, who else was in the house that day? Do both brothers have access to vehicles all the time, or did Dad have one of the cars during the day while he was at work?

The neighbour says he saw Mikes riding his bike on Friday
Was it at 5:30?

  • #38
I'm thinking he did go for a bike ride at 5:30 and something happened to him after he returned. Possibly his younger son was not there when that something happened.

I'm already feeling sad about what might be revealed this afternoon.
