Autopsy planned; son has been charged with his murder

By Steve Pardo and Serena Maria Daniels
The Detroit News

Troy— A body found Friday morning in Genesee County by police is believed to be that of Patrick Mikes, the Troy accountant whose son is charged with murdering him.

Police found a body around 11 a.m. Friday near a cornfield in northern Genesee County on Morrish Road, north of Lake Road, near Flint.

A bicycle matching the description of one belonging to Mikes, an avid cyclist, was found about 15 feet away from the body, said Troy Police Capt. Robert Redmond...

Oakland County Medical Examiners expect to complete the autopsy today of a body found in Montrose Township on Friday — the body that police said they believe to be the Troy father who has been missing the past two weeks.

Authorities say they believe 55-year-old Patrick Mikes Sr. was killed by his son Patrick Mikes Jr. in the family’s basement in late July, then was transported to Montrose...

Not to put the cart before the horse, but I notice that folks posting comments on various news sites are calling for the DP in this case. FYI: Michigan does not have the Death Penalty. LWOP is the ultimate punishment in the Great Lakes State.

Good article here about the family, Mr. Mikes, and some of the evidence

http://www.freep.com/article/201208...roy-man-s-body-bike-found-dumped-in-cornfield

From the link:

Cell phone pings from Mikes Jr.'s phone led them to the area, after he disappeared for about three hours on July 28. He told his brother he was going to search for his dad, Troy Police Capt. Robert Redmond said.

Two farmers told police they saw Mikes Jr.'s car in the area, investigators said.

BBM

That explains LE's focus on the Montrose area. They went door to door in the area and found two farmers who recognized the photo of Mike Sr.'s car.

RIP Mr. Mikes. Something terrible happened in that house. :(

We'll see if we ever get to find out, but I read an article on the Detroit News web site today and one of the comments is interesting... http://www.detroitnews.com/article/...r-Flint?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|FRONTPAGE|s

Hi neighbor.

There has to be more to the story. What kind of catalyist would cause this kind of rage? Money? Drugs? Lovers? I'm just thinking out loud. I've been in really heated arguments and none of them ever ended w/ me killing the other person. I can't help but jump to drugs.lack of or in the midst of the high. Something to give me a reason why someone would out of the blue murder then dispose of in such a callous way. All just moo. I say this knowing the is never a good enough reason and after being on,WS I'm well aware that people kill for the most asinine things.

From what I've gleaned about this family, and perhaps Patrick, Jr. in particular as the oldest son and his father's namesake, is that there was enormous pressure to succeed, particularly in the academic arena. Mr. Mikes attended both Notre Dame and the University of Chicago both of which are stellar schools with highly competitve admissions and challenging academically.

Patrick, Jr. was a graduate of UofD Jesuit High School that is among the most prestigious of prep schools in Metro Detroit. The school attracts the brightest and best from the area, and the school boasts a 99.9% graduation rate with most students seeking higher education. It seems like ancient history given that I graduated from high school more than 40 years ago, but three young men from my Catholic elementary school attended UDJ, and all three became physicians.

Knowing that the youngest brother attended St. Hugo School in Bloomfield Hills, it's possible that Patrick, Jr. and his older sister also went to the school. I know first hand that this elementary school is a pressure cooker with students knowing from day one that they must succeed so that they can get into the prestigious private high schools in the area, most of which have very competitive admissions.

We don't know much about the family dynamic beyond the children having lost their mother to cancer when they were quite young and that their father raised them with high moral standards and emphasis on educational excellence. Those two factors alone may have been a brewing tempest in a teapot for young Patrick, and he could no longer endure so much pressure to succeed. :moo:

There may very well have been something other than money that sparked this confrontation. Really, with the religious background of the father and children I could see something like getting someone pregnant (just as an example, I have no indication there is anything of the kind here) would be something that would make Mr. Mikes Sr. extremely upset and could have sparked a confrontation.

It's really wide open as to the reason.

They're awaiting review of dental records before they make the final ID

Also an interesting Patch.com article written by the reporter who was with LE when they were 30 ft. from the body.

A few of the things I found in the rainy woods Thursday in Montrose Township: An old shoe, a faded beach towel, two dead deer, a gas cap, part of a snake, a golf ball and a toilet seat.

I would also find out Friday that Troy Police Capt. Bob Redmond and I were unknowingly within 30 feet of finding the body believed to be that of Troy man Patrick Joseph Mikes on Thursday night, just before the day's search was called off due to the rain and dwindling daylight.

I've never been in the presence of a decaying body, but it had been SO hot out, if they were 30 feet away shouldn't they have smelled it? Obviously they didn't or they would have found him the day before but I wonder why it didn't?

Maybe he was confronted about stealing from his brother....

Until it is confirmed by an official source that this son was abused or had too much expected of him, my sympathy is with the murdered father. Seems unfair to blame him for his own death!! Even if he had strong religious beliefs and expected his children to excel academically.

Body confirmed as missing Troy man; autopsy finds blunt force trauma
By Mike Martindale
The Detroit News

Pontiac— The body of a man found in a Genesee County cornfield last week is that of a missing Troy man, and he died of multiple blunt force trauma, the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office reported Monday.

The remains of Patrick Joseph Mikes, 55, missing for nearly three weeks, were found Friday by searchers in Montrose Township. Because of decomposition, Mikes was identified through dental records...

Wouldn't stealing be considered among the father's religious beliefs? "Thou shalt not steal."

Are you suggesting that Patrick, Jr. had stolen from his brother previously? The credit card incident for which he was charged happened after the father was killed. There had to be something else that caused the violent confrontation. :moo:

My thoughts and prayers are with the grieving family and with the son who is charged with murder.

Nobody, including me, implied that Mr. Mikes Sr. is to blame at all. We were just trying to figure out what could have precipitated whatever happened.

I don't think anyone here suggested he might have been abused. And as far as high expectations or moral compass goes, everyone handles pressure differently. Killing your father is no way to deal with anything--this we all know. I'd just like to know how it got to that point. And we may never know.

I feel terrible that this happened to him, but when I'm pondering what could have happened here, I kind of step back and think it out in an objective way without injecting emotion or assigning blame to anyone or anything. Maybe that comes off as blaming but it's really not meant that way at all.

BBM I am sure I have missed some things but I don't remember a time or even a positive date of the altercation/murder. Can you guide me to this info? I was under the assumption that it could have occurred any time between when Sr. was last seen on Thurs. to time for Sr. to head to work on Friday.
http://troy.patch.com/articles/body-found-friday-confirmed-to-be-troy-man-patrick-mikes
He was last seen alive by his 16-year-old son, Andrew Mikes, on the evening of July 26.

Mikes did not show up for work on July 27

I am open to anything right now with the info that I have seen. Somewhere in my heart I am hoping there is a legitimate reason for this to have occurred. I guess the most I can hope for is a case of self defense resulting in the accidental death of Sr. I could see a 21 year old who has excelled and never been in any trouble not knowing what to do or how to tell his siblings, aunts, uncles, and grandparents that he had killed Sr. Since there is just nothing to indicate this young man has a history of violence or argumentative behavior, I have to think something very troubling happened to reach this point.

Until more info is available, I have sympathy for Sr., Jr., and the entire family. Whatever happened, this family will never be the same.

I have seen no information regarding a burial or memorial service for Mr. Mikes Sr., so it seems perhaps the ME's office hasn't released the body or the family may have preferred to do something privately due to the circumstances.

I've been checking the obits daily, too, and have also visited some local funeral home sites to see if there was some type of service planned for Mr. Mikes. Once the media was notified that the autopsy had been completed, I think that the body would have been released to the family. I agree with you that the family of Mr. Mikes might have wanted a private service.

Thoughts and prayers for this grieving family.
