I am really waiting to hear motive in this case. I think it will prove to be interesting.

Assuming that Patrick Mikes, Jr. will evenutally face trial as the sole suspect in his father's murder, I am anxious to know what his defense will be.

Mental exam sought in Troy slaying
By Mike Martindale
The Detroit News

Troy — A defense attorney for a Troy man charged with the beating death of his father seeks a court order to have his client examined inside the Oakland County Jail by a doctor and psychiatrist.

Patrick Mikes Jr., 21, is charged with open murder in the death of Patrick Mikes Sr., 55, whose body was found dumped in a Genesee County cornfield three weeks after he reportedly went for a bike ride on July 27 and never returned.

The elder Mikes' body was found in Montrose Township following two days of searching.

Mikes Jr., who remains in the Oakland County Jail without bond, is scheduled to go before Troy District Judge William Bolle today on the request filed by his attorney, Christopher Andreoff.

Andreoff could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

District court filings show he believes his two medical experts must be allowed to meet with Mikes to assist in his defense, but Oakland County Jail administrators would not permit it without a court order...

From the quoted link
Assistant Oakland County prosecutor Ken Frazee has asked Bolle to deny the request, arguing that Michigan case law requires a defendant to be examined at the state forensic center before any meeting with a privately retained expert.

It is not unusual for defense attorneys to request forensic examinations for their clients to determine whether they are mentally competent to stand trial, realize the wrongfulness of the crime they are charged with, or to determine if they have the capacity and ability to assist in their own defense.

They are not saying Mikes, Jr. can't be examined by a psychiatrist (and/or medical doctor) just that he has to be examined by the state psychiatric facility first. After the state evaluation, the defense can ask for a private evaluation.

Good way to keep a privately hired expert from venturing too far off the mark.

Mikes, Jr. should be evaluated IMO. His attorney surely knows the process in his state.

I've listened/watched livestream since session started at @10:30. Brief recess now awaiting testimony from second witness. Oakland County Medical Examiner has finished. I took copious notes but have to do a few things before continuing. COD: Multiple blunt force trauma to head. Long story short: Defense appears to be leaning towards self-defense. More later.

Update on proceedings:

Another short break but hearing still going on, and I've been watching continuously. Guess I won't get much done today :D

If/when there's a trial, I will definitely try to attend at least a few days as the courthouse is close and not in a heavy traffic area.

Court has adjourned for the day. Arguments and decision next Monday morning, Ocober 1.

I will post media links as I find them today.
