Renee Pagel, a 41 year old mother of three was recovering from surgery. She'd donated a kidney to the parent of one of her students. Someone entered her home and stabbed her, Pagel died from her injuries.

Pagel was also in the middle of a difficult divorce. With her death, her soon to be ex husband would gain full custody of their children. On the advice of his attorney, Michael Pagel has never been interviewed by police with regard to Renee's murder. He has since moved away from the Grand Rapids area.

His attorney states that Michael has an "airtight" alibi for the time of the murder.
