Wasn't it also the case that because she's alive, they could take a spit sample for Ancestry and 23andme? Which they can't do with deceased Does. I could be wrong but I'm sure that was the case. Surely getting her mother to take an Ancestry test would be conclusive enough? They would match. Unless that's already been done and they just really need to confirm in the 'official' way.

Completely baffled as to how you lose someone with no legs who has amnesia. Where's the duty of care?

My other thought is that possibly her amnesia wasn't as strong as she said, she realised they were getting close to her real identity (or perhaps had even told her) so she left because she doesn't want to face her family. Maybe she worried her family wouldn't believe she had amnesia (even if it's true) and would blame her for leaving her children. I'm not doubting her story, I don't think she'd go through all of this if she didn't actually have amnesia, but maybe it was too scary for her - actually finding out who she is and the prospect of meeting her family.

Either way they should know where she is and it's terrible that they don't. She could be with anyone, she could be getting hurt. She could be dead. Her poor family (especially her children) getting this glimpse of hope and now this!

@Laura Avery I'm guessing yours might have been the tip they are referring to. Did you ever get any additional feedback on this bizarre outcome?

How ridiculous. She has no legs, how do they lose her? I can't imagine being a family member and finding out that she was alive for 13 years and was lost by a system that should have been caring for her.

Looking at Kathryn's photos on the Charley Project, I definitely see similarity with China Black. I wonder if we'll find out soon why she was in Detroit, or if we'll ever find out what caused her amnesia and amputations. None of the information about Kathryn's case mentions medical issues.

I had to read through this twice..lost her!?
😧 HOW!?

This is crazy. They're so close, and I do think the lead they have is a definite possibility. I guess as an adult, they just let her check out and leave? Definitely negligent

Is someone trying to prevent the DNA testing comparison with her potential family from taking place, because if she is their relative, they then might have a right to demand accountability for her safety and whereabouts?
I am honestly asking and have no idea. JMO

Portsmouth police said they have been unable to locate Black, but believe she is still in the Detroit area. Detective Holley said that she is no longer at the facility and there isn’t much documentation of where she went next.

Michigan State Police did take DNA when they were initially working to find China Black’s true identity. Holley said that China Black was on medication that may have given the DNA issues and they have not be able to use it.

Police plan to take a new sample of her DNA to compare it with a sample of Griffin’s mother’s DNA to determine if they are in fact the same person

What is DNA Doe project working with if police don't have China's DNA?

By "DNA issues" does that mean HIPAA/HIPPA prevents access to the DNA on hand?

If she has amnesia why didn’t she have a power of attorney?

I know that happens for elderly folks in the care of the state or with no relatives where a decision (usually medical) needs to be made on their behalf because they are incapable for some reason or other (a coma, severe dementia, etc)

I would argue that she needed a full-time power of attorney or something akin to that.

The woman is an adult, and as long as her amnesia does not effect her ability to care for herself or presents a clear and immediate danger she is free to come and go. Care facilities/boarding homes cannot hold an individual against their will. Lots of amputees develop adaptive skills to be able to live independently. Hopefully someday she'll turn up, or maybe she's comfortable being China Black now.

I going to use a gut check and I think i’m speaking this way because of heightened emotions. You’re likely right here. My apologies. It’s just so frustrating how easily people can slip through the cracks. Not things but people.

It’s disheartening sometimes.

I don't recall the exact circumstances but my sister had a patient in the hospital (bilateral BKA - no lower legs) who left AMA. She didn't have a wheelchair or any other device. They legally could not keep her, even though it looked super negligent that they were allowing her to leave without supports (mobile, social, etc) in place.

They appear to be claiming that the medication she was on effected her dna, and the sample isn't suitable for comparison for that reason.

Is this even possible? Are any medications even able to do that?

Weren't they already attempting genetic geneology, though? So should have a profile available?

Would be the first ive ever heard of it
Everything I've found online says that DNA impacts how a person processes medications, but medications don't impact DNA. I am completely confused why anyone is saying any medications would impact that! Especially since she was in a care facility, ALIVE, for 7 years. The mind boggles...

Her missing profiles have mentioned drug issues. Amputations can arise from drug issues when users inject into the veins in their legs too much and infection takes hold - even sepsis, which often leads to amputations. Drug use could feasibly lead to amnesia, if she went into cardiac arrest from an overdose, and the lack of oxygen to the brain gave her brain damage. Just speculation though, it's just as likely she could have been hit by a car or something.

Good insight - I didn't think of that. I was more so thinking about diabetes or circulatory issues that could lead to amputation but drug use is certainly plausible. Could drug use lead to permanent amnesia and a living doe who cannot remember their past?

From the few living Doe cases I have read about, usually there is some type of TBI that is a permanent condition, and it was mentioned that the care home she was at specializes in care for those with TBI, mental illness, and developmental disabilities.

It was also mentioned that there were tips that she was homeless and already had her amputations (speculated to be from frostbite but I'm not sure if that is particularly likely) before an apparent car accident.

Was there anyone who knew her in the Detroit area before she was hospitalized? There's no way that she just popped up in the care home - there has to be someone who knew something about her or a reason why she was in Detroit, given the distance between Detroit and her home in Virginia, as well as the time gap between 2012 and when she was first "discovered" in 2018.

What an odd case. I hope her family gets answers.

The news interview strikes me because it says that her story about being hit by a car outside of a McDonald's was never verified by anyone else and there is no apparent date of when this happened. They also mentioned that she is believed to have grown up in Detroit, so it is interesting that Kathryn only disappeared in 2012.

Hi no..this isn't the person I turned in..and I really don't think this is her either.
The daily mail is sensational journalism and well known for telling mistruths to sell papers..hen e in the UK also called "The daily fail" I'd take everything they write "with a punch of salt" as in there might only be a grain of truth in the information provided, but usually wildly exaggerated, and "witnesses" being fabricated.
