Bond set for kidnapping suspect John Skelton

A judge set bond at $3 million for kidnapping suspect John Skelton today. Skelton appeared in Lucas County Common Pleas Court before Judge Cook for an extradition hearing. Authorities want to bring Skelton to Michigan to face charges that he kidnapped his three sons last week.

Skelton was brought into the courtroom in a wheelchair and appeared to be wearing a protective vest. Police officers from Morenci, Skelton's home town, were in court for this morning's hearing.

Why of course he is going to fight extradition! He can't just give in and go back to MI, he has to have control! I am so angry right now I could spit nails! (am sitting on fingers-I like WS too much, don't want a banishment!)

MORENCI, Mich. -- The father charged with the parental kidnapping of his three missing sons is fighting his return to Michigan from a jail in Ohio.

John Skelton is being held in Lucas County Jail in Ohio. During a hearing Wednesday, he and his court-appointed attorney -- Merle Dech -- said he would fight being brought back to Michigan’s Lenawee County to face the charges.

The extradition is for the kidnapping charges. MI has jurisdiction over the kidnapping charges. If it is determined he murdered the boys in OH, he will be charged in OH for the murders and possibly in MI for the kidnapping......

Lucas County Common Pleas Court Judge Gary Cook set the bond at $1 million on each of the three charges after court-appointed lawyer Merle Dech Jr. declined to waive his client’s rights.
Assistant Lucas County Prosecutor Jeff Lingo asked for the bond as Morenci police officers and Lenawee County Sheriff’s Deputies waited in the Toledo courtroom this morning.
Skelton was brought to court shackled and in a wheelchair with his left ankle propped up, an injury his sister said he sustained when he fell from a banister in the basement of his Morenci home Friday during a suicide attempt.
At the Dec. 14 hearing, Skelton also has the right to an identity hearing in which he may challenge whether Michigan authorities have the right suspect. Cook told Skelton that, based on the presence of Michigan police officers, it seemed certain they had the right man.
Skelton, whose sister said he had lost his job as a long-haul trucker last month, said he had no money for a lawyer. Cook arranged for Dech’s services in advance, anticipating Skelton wouldn’t be able to afford a lawyer on his own.

had hearing this morning... he is fighting extradition.

as of this friday will discontinue volunteer searches to re evaluate

need to stop and evaluate where they are at

asking people in regions talking about is to search their own properties and if you have a large property call command center

there are private lands out there that they haven't been able to access

command center open thru end of the weekend

tomorrow at 11am mayor will speak at briefing

skelton is in wc because he has an air cast on ((suspicion he has not for sure))

desire to maintain hope but info he has does not have positive outcome

have not spoken with John in some time or developed any new info in where they may be at

received hundreds of tips and all being looked into including myspace
