That's the first I've heard of it termed so specifically. Whoa!

If this is so, then I don't know how this guy could be termed anything but a "suspect."

And, that is a direct quote from Lt. Risko. No media spin on that.

Plus this:

“The police and Child Protection Services requested that we not have the kids here cause they're afraid Doug might kidnap them,” said McComb.

Same link as Kimberly's.

also snipped from that article above:

“He wasn't there at the time we arrived,” said Lt. Risko. “he showed up a little while later and watched from across the street.”

Despite investigators finding evidence they say links Stewart to his wife's disappearance in Michigan, Ohio, and his home in Virginia, they still aren't ready to call him a suspect.

“We're not going to call him a suspect until we have an arrest warrant in our hands and we do not have that at this point,” said Lt. Risko.

So, that tells me they are in the process of getting the arrest warrant.

evidence that they say links Stewart to his wife's disappearance! :waitasec:
Oh yeah, an arrest is coming.

I have a real problem with this practice.

I hope it's in their hands soon. Just sayin.

He did this! He knows it.

So, he lawyers up and trys to get his kids before the body is found.

So, they have evidence that ties him to this in...
1) MI - tire tracks/stuff they found at his parents home/tarp wrapper
2) OH - Tape from Wal-Mart????
3) VA - the stuff they took from his home

So, who had access to his truck and his parents home????
DS

They are gonna get him.

Like a lot of us thought from the beginning, he is burnt toast.

If they can place him in MI on that morning, I'd say he is.

So it seems like what Risko is saying is that he doesn't want to jeopardize the investigation and consequent prosecution by naming Doug a suspect until they have enough evidence to arrest him.

And at that point, when he's arrested, he'll be known as "defendant," not "suspect."

So it looks like "person of interest" is as close as we're going to get to "suspect" in this case.

They can't get an arrest warrant until they find VS. They have no evidence that a crime has been committed otherwise.

I don't think so. The state would have had to do something about it, Venus is a missing person and the grandparents had no legal standing, that left the children in limbo as far as the law was concerned. They couldn't have allowed that situation to continue indefinitely. Also, because of the implicit allegations against the father it would be foolish to allow him custody at this point, so the state needs to act on behalf of the children.

Given the contentious nature of the current relationship between the father and the grandparents I think having the state assume tempory guardianship of the kids until all of this is resolved wouldn't be a bad thing, at the very least it would force the parties involved to at least be civil to each other in the presence of the children (because it sure as hell doesn't look like that is happening right now).

I'm not caught up.... so unsure if this has been posted, but it is likely the state may grant the grandparents physical custody, but retain some sort of legal custody to ensure the childrens best interests are being met. Especially if they believe some sort of supervised visitation is in order for the children to remain in contact with their father. (and due to the contentious nature of the relationship between grandparents and father........ )

JMO and off to finish catching up reading.

Interesting move by the court.

They are probably waiting for more information. Unless both parties agree, which is clearly not the case in this instance, custody hearings often take months. The move doesn't surprise me in the least.

He can be charged with murder even without finding her body...maybe not this soon, unless there is a significant amount of blood or the dogs hit on something...but eventually...

Snipped:
Lt. Risko says Doug's presence in his parents home is what led to a search of that property.

“We had a couple of cadaver dogs that checked the area and it took a couple hours,” said Lt. Risko. “We did find some evidence that we believe related to the disappearance of Venus.”

Lt. Risko wouldn't say exactly what investigators founds, but Doug Stewart was there to see the discovery

Did we know this?

Curious, curious... I somehow doubt DS is the only one going to be arrested if he is arrested. He didn't do it alone or without someone elses knowledge. :twocents:

"I suspected either his parents' house or his sister's house,” said McComb

I know this guy is distraught, and has to be one tough man to get on camera to talk about this , but am I the only one that is troubled by him suggesting that VS could be at DS sisters house ?

  • #318
I think they are ratcheting up the pressure on DS and I think it took some stones for DS to show up at the search of his parents house. So the game playing appears to be mutual.

Let's face it, DS' attorney would have advised him to stay far, far away from any LE activity.

I wasn't sure which link that was from so am adding it again.

I am troubled as well. It is not fair that DS suggest any of Dougs family is involved in assisting Doug with anything he might have to do with Venus's disappearance. Before putting further division between the two families and falsely accusing someone not involved, it would be very wise for him to get a family spokesperson. I wonder if LE will recommend he do so, or even if they have already.

False!

Casey Anothony was arrested before they found Caylee.
John Gardner was arrested before they found Chelsea.
Mario Andrette McNeill was arrested before they found Shaniya.

There are other cases as well.

They may not charge him with murder this early, but he can certainly be arrested!
