Michael Debakey has died

Sounds like he just had great genes in the family. Also that Meditteranean diet is healthy.

Usually surgeons don't have much time to eat at all, and they have really strange hours. All my husband did was complain of the hospital food, and he's so glad he doesn't have to eat it anymore.

My husband has that same wiry build and driving personality. I think just being a surgeon is "genetic", lol. And they are "bears" to get along with; sometimes I have to kick him out the door. :) They also think they are ordained by God, and know everything about everything else in the world, since they are "medical experts". Ahem.

Pardon me; getting off topic here

I think you are absolutely right, Martha, the surgeons are hard wired from birth with a certain kind of personality. Reminds me of when my FIL had surgery after his catastrophic stroke, and we all realized why neurosurgeons are not known for their bedside manner...if you know what I mean. My poor MIL was just shocked, but he wasn't being cruel. He was just telling it like it was then.

If you add a genius intellect and the ability to see beyond what's being done now...I think you get that once in a generation brilliance known as Dr. DeBakey.

What a great man, we are so fortunate to have had him, and we can only hope the next generation of surgeons and doctors is bringing another DeBakey to the forefront.

I heard another doctor/friend talking about Dr. Debakey on TV yesterday saying that Dr. D would operate on anyone regardless of ability to pay. He would do it for free! They don't make too many doctors like that anymore.
RIP Dr. Debakey. . . .

Big hugs to you kato.

My uncle was a patient of Dr. Debakey's many, many years ago. He was a brilliant man and surgeon. May he rest in peace.

There was a movie about Dr. DeBakey's life and I can't remember the name of it. Can anyone help me out? I watched it several times and loved it. It could've been an HBO movie, I'm not sure.

ETA - Never mind. I found it but it apparently wasn't the story of DeBakey (I always thought it was). It was a movie called "Something the Lord Made."

I was really upset at his passing. My husband said- what do you expect? He lived to be 99 years old.
Which only made me feel extremely old because I remember his pioneering heart surgery, his appearances on TV in the news with another breakthrough.

Many of us have loved ones with us right now thanks to this pioneering genius, whom I suspect never took himself too seriously. :)
God bless you, Dr. Debakey.
