Circumstances of Disappearance​

At the time of her disappearance, Michelle was in the custody of her father, Dick Willard, a notorious criminal involved in prostitution, drug dealing, and stolen goods. Dick claimed Michelle vanished from his car after he quickly left to buy her a puzzle at a local toy store. He believed Michelle's mother kidnapped her and, therefore, did not report her disappearance to the police. Only when a family friend eventually learned she was not with her mother was Michelle reported missing. The police did not appropriately respond.

Only in 1988 did the juvenile court urge the police to take action. A rumor described how Dick had sold Michelle for 20.000 guilders to acquaintances in Spain. Dick maintained his innocence, accusing Michelle's mother of the crime instead until he was murdered in 1991.
