Arts, Beats & Eats canceled - drive-in and online events to take its place

Another domino just fell. Bowing to the realities of COVID-19, Royal Oak's Labor Day Festival, Arts, Beats & Eats, announced Wednesday that it's canceling for this year.

But that doesn't mean the festival, supported by Soaring Eagle Casino and Flagstar Bank, is entirely disappearing. Instead, festival producer Jon Witz said in a statement that they'll sponsor a range of "virtual and small-scale live activations" to keep the AB&E spirit alive.

Even better, many of the planned events will be fundraisers to generate cash for local musicians, whose livelihoods have been crushed by the pandemic. With "The Beats Go On..." Witz hopes to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars with drive-in concerts and online performances Labor Day weekend...

Michigan Gov. Whitmer will allow casinos to reopen at 15 percent capacity

Indoor gatherings limited to 10 people

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed Executive Order 2020-160 and Executive Order 2020-161, amending Michigan’s Safe Start Order and issuing revised workplace safeguards amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Starting on July 31, statewide indoor gatherings will be limited to 10 people and bars will be closed for indoor service across the state. That includes in Regions 6 and 8...

Whitmer to reimpose limits in northern Michigan, reopen Detroit casinos

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is pulling back the reins in Michigan's northern regions that have enjoyed looser COVID-19 restrictions but also allowing for the reopening of Detroit's three casinos.

Whitmer issued an executive order Wednesday night that reimposes restrictions starting at 12:01 a.m. Friday for Regions 6 and 8 — which include the Upper Peninsula and 17 counties in northern Michigan — that cap indoor gatherings at 10 people and close indoor bars where alcohol accounts for 70% of sales. Outdoor gatherings in Regions 6 and 8 remain limited to 250 people.

But Whitmer, in a separate order Wednesday, allowed for Detroit's casinos to reopen at 15% capacity Aug. 5.

"After seeing a resurgence in cases connected to social gatherings across the state, we must further limit gatherings for the health of our community and economy," Whitmer said. "By taking these strong actions, we will be better positioned to get our children back into classrooms and avoid a potentially devastating second wave.” ...

5 students test positive for COVID-19 at University of Detroit Mercy’s School of Dentistry

DETROIT – With 700 students seeing patients and members of the public at two facilities, five students at University of Detroit Mercy’s School of Dentistry have tested positive for COVID-19.

Local 4 Defenders were invited into the school Thursday and was shown all the safeguards the day after the dean notified students and staff of the five cases. Those five cases were not mentioned to the Local 4 crew Thursday...

School districts struggle to set fall plans amid COVID-19

Michigan will not have a uniform, statewide K-12 reopening plan this school year for its 544 traditional school districts and nearly 300 public school academies.

The first day of school for 1.5 million children will look different in every district in Michigan, where hundreds of different reopening plans will soon be underway as educators resume teaching amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Because districts have local control, each district is coming up with its own plan using guidance from the governor’s executive order on reopening schools, with some districts opening classrooms to students as early as Aug. 26...

Glad that I don't have to make this decision as a parent or teacher. While Michiganders have done a decent job of keeping the virus at bay, reopening schools is bound to result in an uptick in cases.

We learned last weekend that our HOA has decided to have a subdivision-wide garage sale this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. WTF!!! During a pandemic? I doubt that masks will be worn or social distancing practiced. We don't really care for garage sales and won't participate, but we think it's a ridiculous idea :rolleyes:

FDA rejects Henry Ford system's bid for hydroxychloroquine approval

The federal Food and Drug Administration has rejected a July 6 request by Detroit-based Henry Ford Health System for approval to use hydroxychloroquine in treating some COVID-19 patients.

The health system's request followed a Henry Ford study showing that the controversial drug was effective in lowering the death rate among COVID-19 patients.

The study was questioned by the scientific community, including by Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who described it as "flawed" in testimony before federal lawmakers in late July...

Just adding that I will have had 2 Covid tests (nose swab but not all the way up to my small brain lol) after tomorrow. My G.I. dr had me get one last week and the hospital where I will have my colonoscopy on Monday is requiring one as well. That is scheduled tomorrow morning.

I would like an antibody test but GI dr said it wouldn't not matter because I could catch it again (pretty sure I had in early Feb). Especially since my immune system is compromised. (Michigander here)

My teen son attends Utica Schools and we are all doing the virtual academy to at least Oct

Lawmakers, Whitmer reach education deal finalizing guidelines

Lansing — The GOP-led Legislature and Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer reached a deal Friday on a package of bills that finalize the guidelines and rules school districts must observe as students begin classes in the coming weeks.

The plan drew immediate criticism from some educators and groups, who criticized the agreement as a backroom deal made during a crucial planning period for a school year full of uncertainty.

A one-page outline of the plan reviewed by The Detroit News late Friday night indicates the package establishes "parameters" to ensure teachers regularly "interface" with students. Noncompliance will disqualify a school for state funding...

Michigan House to review return-to-school agreement

House expected to vote on bill Monday

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan governor and legislative leadership announced they reached a return-to-school deal just ahead of Saturday’s special Senate session.

Highlights of the return-to-school deal look like this:
  • $583 in federal coronavirus relief funds dedicated to schools
  • $350 per pupil
  • More than $50 million in hazard pay for educators
  • $18 million for safety measures and local benchmark assessments to figure out how kids are doing.
  • A 75/25 formula to determine attendance, meaning that 75% will be counted from last year’s total of students versus 25% from online attendance...

Hi BDE! Checking in. I despise garage sales lol. Kids are back at CMU this week. Wonder how long that will last????
